A nível eclesiástico, a cidade de Fátima é simultaneamente sede de diocese com a cidade de Leiria. O nome da, então, renomeada Diocese de Leiria-Fátima foi atribuído pelo Papa João Paulo II a 13 de maio de 1984, mas a nível administrativo Fátima pertence ao distrito de Santarém. Fátima, tornou-se num dos mais importantes destinos internacionais de turismo religioso.
