Chapter 40 of 84 of Paul Hodge's April, 2013 Video Book 2013 Carnival Rio de Janeiro Carnival chronicles Paul's February 10-11, 2013, 9:00 pm to 6:00 am, first-of-its-kind coverage of the 9 hour first round of the world famous Rio Samba School Parade CompetItions at Rio's Sambadromo.
This video is the final Part 4 of 4 of the complete performance of the Inocentes de Belford Roxo Samba School including all its wonderful floats. Inocentes has achieved a lot as a relatively new school founded in 1993. It was the first school to perform starting at around 9:00 pm on Sunday, February 10th.
For the school's 2013 Carnival parade competition theme, Inocentes examines the seven unions of the river Han in South Korea with the performance focusing on the goddess of the wind, Yondung Halmoni, who is celebrated in shamanic rituals. The performance incorporates ritual dances and flowing colors to represent the movement of water.
Covering this event was a grueling marathon. In addition to the Sambadromo being in a dangerous neighborhood and the killer all night hours, the performances took place in 80+ degree heat and high humidity. The heat got so bad for some of the performers that Paul/members of the audience were passing them water bottles.

Beating out ten other Rio samba schools in the Rio Carnival 2014 Samba School Parade Competitions, Salgueiro Samba School won second place which was announced Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Paul's HD video Chapter 65, Part 3 of 4 is part of a very unique four-part HD series chronicling the entire Salgueiro Samba School's second place performance at Rio's Sambadromo. Salgueiro Samba School's performance was the second to last performance on the first day of Rio Carnival 2014's Samba School Parade Special Group Competitions. At about 1:30 am, early in the morning of March 3, 2014, the Salgueiro performers put on a wonderful performance which was fully captured by Paul Hodge in his colorful four-part HD series. The Salgueiro Samba School's theme, Gaia in Life our Hands, celebrated the love of Gaia and its promise of life and happiness. This chapter is part of a six part HD series focusing on the entire Wash Away Evils Spirits Ceremonial Parade that all Rio's samba schools participated in before the last technical rehearsal on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Rio's Sambadromo. Not only is this ceremony intended to wash away evil spirits but also it is to honor Saint Sebastian, Patron Saint of Rio de Janeiro. After this ceremony, the last technical rehearsal was performed by last year's Rio Carnival 2013 Samba School Champion G.R.E.S. Unidos de Vila Isabel.
The February 23rd Wash ritual and technical rehearsal performance were open to the public for free. The Sambadromo is the stadium for samba and was purpose built for the Samba School Parade Competitions, and the technical rehearsal tests the Sambadromo's lighting and sound. It is the last rehearsal before the official start of the seventeen (17) samba school Access Group competitions (February 28 & March 1) and the twelve (12) samba school Special (Main) Group competitions (March 1 & 2). The 2014 champion samba school will be chosen only from the Special Group of samba school competitors. In the Wash Ceremonial Parade and the technical rehearsal, performers do not wear costumes, and there are no floats.
This HD video chronicles the beginning of the Wash Ceremonial Parade. One can only marvel at the great positive energy created by the wonderful music and the enthusiasm of the performers. Without doubt, the Wash ritual has an an electrifying and cleansing affect on the spectators.
