Sawahlunto is a city in West Sumatra, Indonesia, 90 kilometres from Padang. The city covers 276 sq. km, and had a population of 59,821 in 2014. Sawahlunto is one of the mining towns in West Sumatra. It was first established as a town in 1882 by the Dutch along with coal mining operations. Coal was discovered in the mid-19th century by Ir. de Greve. It was then suggested to the Dutch that coal should be mined in the area because coal was needed for industry and transportation.     The Nurul Islam Great Mosque or also known as Sawahlunto Great Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia located in Kubang Subdistrict of North Sirakuak, District of Lembah Segar, Sawahlunto town, West Sumatra. The location is about 150 meters from the Sawahlunto Railway Museum.The mosque was built during the Dutch colonial period and it was originally a steam power plant. The building was built in 1894 and changed its function to a mosque since 1952, while its chimney was later used as a minaret and 10 meters dome was additionally built. The main building of the mosque measures 60 × 60 meters and has one large dome in the center surrounded by four smaller domes. Underneath the main building was a foxhole that had been used for assembling weapons such as hand grenades and mortars.C...

    Lake Singkarak is a lake in West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located between the cities of Padang Panjang and Solok. It has an area of 107.8 km², being approximately 21 km long and 7 km wide. The natural outlet for excess water is the Ombilin river which flows eastward to the Strait of Malacca. A hydroelectric project, however, has diverted most of the lake outflow to the Anai river which flows westward into the Indian Ocean near Padang. This Singkarak power station uses this water to generate power for the West Sumatra and Riau provinces. A species of fish called ikan bilih is endemic to the lake, and is harvested for human consumption. A railway line, which connects Padang and Sawahlunto-Sijunjung, skirts the length of the lake on the eastern side.
