Selçuk is the central town of Selçuk district, İzmir Province in Turkey, 2 kilometres northeast of the ancient city of Ephesus. Its original Greek name, Agios Theologos , referred to John the Theologian. In the 14th century, it was the capital of the Emirate of Aydin, and visited by Ibn Battuta.     In Christian and Muslim tradition, the Seven Sleepers is the story of a group of youths who hid inside a cave outside the city of Ephesus around 250 to escape a religious persecution and emerge 300 years later. The earliest version of this story comes from the Syrian bishop Jacob of Serugh , which is itself derived from an earlier Greek source, now lost.
