Shaanxi is a province of the People's Republic of China. Officially part of the Northwest China region, it lies in central China, bordering the provinces of Shanxi , Henan , Hubei , Chongqing , Sichuan , Gansu , Ningxia , and Inner Mongolia . It covers an area of over 205,000 km2 with about 37 million people. Xi'an – which includes the sites of the former Chinese capitals Fenghao and Chang'an – is the provincial capital. Xianyang, which served as the Qin dynasty capital, is located nearby. Its one-character abbreviation is 晋 , after the state of Jin that existed here during the Spring and Autumn period. The name Shanxi means West of the Mountains, a reference to the province's location west of the Taihang Mountains. Shanxi borders Hebei to the east, Henan to the south, Shaanxi to the west, and Inner Mongolia to the north and is made up mainly of a plateau bounded partly by mountain ranges.
