  • 1. Baskunchak Lake Akhtubinsk
    Bogdinsko-Baskunchakski Nature Reserve is a Russian 'zapovednik' in a semi-arid area around two notable features: Lake Baskunchak, Russia's largest undrained salt lake, and Big Bogdo Mountain, the highest point in the Caspian Depression and home to the singing rocks. It is about halfway between Volgograd and Astrakhan, placing it about 200 km north of the Volga River Delta, where the river enters the Caspian Sea from the northwest. About 20 km east of the lake is the border with Kazakhstan. Baskunchak has been a source of salt to Russia for centuries. The reserve is an important site on the bird migration route between northern Siberia and wintering regions. The reserve is situated in the Akhtubinsky District of Astrakhan Oblast.

    Ilovlya is a river in Saratov and Volgograd Oblasts of Russia. It is a left tributary of the Don River, and is 358 kilometres long, with a drainage basin of 9,250 square kilometres . The average discharge is 9.6 cubic metres per second . The river is frozen over from December to March. In earlier times there was a portage here, between the watersheds of the Volga River and Don River.

    The Akhtuba River ; also transliterated Achtuba on some maps) is a left distributary of the Volga River.The Akhtuba splits off the Volga above the city Volgograd , and flows toward the Volga Delta and Caspian Sea. The old beginning of Akhtuba was blocked by the dam of the Volga Hydroelectric Station; now it flows from the Volga via an artificial outtake canal 6.5 kilometres long that starts below the dam. The river is 537 kilometres long; the average water flow is 153 cubic metres per second . The following cities lie on or near the Akhtuba: Volzhsky , Leninsk, Znamensk, Akhtubinsk, Kharabali . The capital of the Golden Horde, Sarai Batu, was most likely located along the Akhtuba as well, not far from Kharabali.
