Dallas - Texas - United States Travel guide
Public transport:
Public transport buses and trains are operated by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) authority. The urban light railway and the commuter line, which are separate lines in the south and north, combine to form a single route in the downtown area. The system operates 0400-2400.
Bus tickets must be purchased with exact change in cash. Alternatively, prepaid tickets and day passes can be purchased from vending machines at the station. Day passes may be purchased in advance.
DART has joined forces with the volunteer-run McKinney Avenue Transit Authority to operate the historic M-Line Streetcar, providing free, daily transit service in downtown and to connect downtown with the uptown neighbourhood. Schedules and detailed route information are available.
Taxis:
Taxis operate 24 hours. Recommended are Checker Cab and Yellow Cab, both at the same depot, and Terminal Cab. A tip of 10% is expected.
Driving:
Driving in downtown Dallas at the weekends is feasible for the visitor, since the streets are relatively quiet. Morning and evening rush hour in the week is just the opposite and very frustrating.
Downtown Dallas is essentially on a north-south grid layout, although north of Pacific Avenue, the grid is skewed slightly and angled more on a northwest-southeast axis.
The most frequently used toll road in Dallas among visitors is the North Tollway, which goes from Downtown up into Collin County. Toll stations no longer exist; you will be invoiced for tolls you are owed (these will be charged to you by your car rental company).
There are meters and parking lots all over Downtown, which can be expensive, except at weekends. Visitors should read meters carefully as timings will be enforced.
Bicycle hire:
Bikes are available for hire from Richardson Bike Mart's White Rock Lake location, 9040 Garland Road Riding around the lake is wonderful in good weather.

New York City travel guide
Renowned for its incredible dynamism, New York is one of the world's most exciting cities. Home to venerated restaurants, chic nightspots, cutting-edge theatre and architectural masterpieces, New York City is forever on the cusp of reinvention, its creativity fuelled in no small part by immigrants who hail from every corner of the globe.
The epicentre of New York City life always has been the island of Manhattan, situated on America's east home, which is home to a fascinating jumble of neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct character. Strolling the city sidewalks is the best way to come face to face with the city in all its frenetic diversity, from the bustling, sensory-rich streets of Chinatown to the peaceful, tree-lined lanes of the West Village. North, south and east of the island, are NYC's four other boroughs - the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island - all of which have their own particular attractions.
New York City is packed with highlights, and it would take a lifetime to see it all. First-time visitors will want to tick off world-class attractions like the Met Museum, the Empire State Building and the Guggenheim, while those who've visited Manhattan before should explore the city's evolving urban landscape, particularly along the park-lined West Side waterfront. A venture out to the boroughs reveals a totally different dimension to the city - whether rooting for the 'Bronx Bombers' at Yankee stadium in the Bronx, feasting on Indian cuisine in Jackson Heights, Queens; or taking in the incredible nightlife in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Visiting the city's iconic sights is only part of the appeal of this burgeoning metropolis. The shimmering lights of Broadway, the jazz clubs of downtown, the indie rock scene of Brooklyn, and highbrow cultural fare at Lincoln Center are all part of the incredibly varied cultural scene. And those more interested in shopping have much to celebrate in New York City, with an astounding collection of colourful boutiques, high-end department stores and edgy shops selling cutting-edge couture. New York City is also a dining mecca, with thousands of restaurants serving up all the world's cuisines.
Although New York City still remembers the harrowing events of 11 September 2001, it has regained its vitality, and now marches forward to confront the challenges of the future. Symbolic of this was the reopening of the National September 11 Memorial on the 10th anniversary of the attack. Two giant pools, set in the footprints of the former twin towers, feature cascading waterfalls and the names of the 3,000 victims of 9/11. Overhead rises the soaring One World Trade Center, a 104-story skyscraper due for completion in 2014.
Other parts of the city have also seen dramatic makeovers in recent years. Coney Island has opened newly restored amusement parks, which continue to offer high-thrill rides, while still retaining its vintage character right off the boardwalk. Further north, the Brooklyn Bridge Park is substantially expanding green space within the city, adding a series of parks, ball fields and playgrounds between the Brooklyn Bridge and Atlantic Avenue.

Paine Center
The Paine Art Center and Gardens is a historic estate with a mansion and gardens located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It includes public art galleries and botanic gardens on 3 acres, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
History
The Paine Mansion was built for lumber baron Nathan Paine and his wife, Jessie Kimberly Paine. In 1925, upon the recommendation of Mary K. Shirk (Jessie's sister), the Paines commissioned Bryant Fleming, an architect from Ithaca, New York to design the estate. Construction of the Tudor Revival style mansion began in 1927 and the exterior was completed in 1930. All work was halted in 1932 as the Great Depression crippled the Paine Lumber Company.
The mansion was originally built as a home for the Paines but workers of the lumber company threatened to bomb the building should they move in. The Paines returned to the project in 1946 and established a non-profit organization to own and manage the estate for public benefit. Nathan Paine died in 1947 at the age of 77. Jessie oversaw remaining work on the estate, and the property opened to the public in 1948. Until Jessie’s death in 1973 at the age of 100, she served as the museum’s president while residing in La Jolla, California.
The Paines never lived in the house.
Features
The Paine estate features a historic house museum with art gallery, and is surrounded by extensive gardens.
The house contains French Barbizon school and American paintings, sculptures, and decorative woodworkings, Persian rugs, tapestries, and English and American silver and china. The Paine Center hosts changing exhibitions and offers educational programs related to historic architecture, art, and to nature.
The estate's landscape gardens have twenty 'outdoor rooms' and designed areas, in various historical—traditional and contemporary themes. They feature thousands of different plant species, serving as a botanical garden.
The Paine Art Center and Gardens are at 1410 Algoma Boulevard in Oshkosh. It is open Tuesday-Sunday throughout the year, and an admission fee is charged.

Thai Elephant Massage - by a Cute Baby Elephant in Koh Samui
In 2007 I volunteered to get a massage from a baby elephant in Thailand, on Koh Samui. The baby elephant was super cute and kept tickling me and also gave me a big wet kiss on my check. Surprisingly, the elephant actually gave a great special massage - with the perfect amount of pressure! It wasn't a Thai Hot Stem Massage of course, but it was impressive and disturbing that a baby elephant could do this. Learn more about how I ended up experiencing this here:
Reading more about how these baby elephants are trained to do these types of 'stunts' - it's pretty shocking. On the PETA Asia-Pacific site it shares videos about how baby elephants are taken from their mothers, tied down, and beaten so severely that they bleed and scream, all in order to force them to perform ridiculous tricks for tourists. To learn more, please take a read of this blog post:
I posted this video ages ago to share just with some family and friends the craziness I experienced. Since recently it has gotten more popular, I would like to encourage you to help spread the word about these types of safaris and the dangers they pose to Thai wildlife.
To raise money, I will be donating Adsense Revenues from this Youtube video to support the care of baby elephants through the organization Bring The Elephant Home - Learn more here:
Also to show your support, please take a pledge to protect baby elephants by raising awareness of this issue here:
