SCARED FOR MY LIFE! Sailing at 22 knots boat speed down HUGE waves (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 105
Yep, La Vagabonde reached 22.7 knots boat speed. We couldn’t believe it. With a max of 28 knots wind behind us from about 120 degrees, we surfed down one wave and then caught the next one in front of that. Before we knew it we were all looking at a 22.7 on the nav gear. I had a close eye on the bows making sure they weren't going to bury, they looked like they might but Riley promised me that it was normal and fine!! Matthieu says we could have got 25 knots so looks like Riley will be aiming for that next time… I never thought I’d go this fast on a sail boat. Still in recovery from this wild experience. Very happy to still be here to tell you this tale, to be alive and writing this very description is a miracle. I love you guys, Elayna.

End of the Year Travels - Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, DC| Vic's Trip May 2016
Chicago was amazing. It's the city closest to London that I've been to so far which meant the pace of the city and navigation were completely comfortable to me. I went with my roommate Rachel (American) and stayed in an air Bnb about half an hour from the city. Over the few days we were there we went up a variety of tall buildings (360 and skydeck) but my favourite was the Aon Center. Rachel's cousin very generously took us their for dinner and we got to watch the sun go down while enjoying our food. While there we used CityPass which meant as well as the tall buildings we saw the aquarium, briefly visited the Field Museum, and my personal favourite the Adler Planetarium. Sadly, rain meant my first ever baseball gsme got cancelled but at least I got to go inside Wrigley Field and see the home of the Chicago Cubs and eat nachos. On our final morning we went and got deep dish Chicago pizza and headed to the airport. I almost missed my flight to Boston because of the insane queues at security but thanks to two lovely strangers whose names I never got, I managed to jump the line and cut out about half and hour of waiting. The two guys pushed me through everything in front of them. I'll never see them again but I am eternally grateful for their help. I only cried a fraction of the amount I otherwise would have if it werent for their help! Eventually, my sweaty, tearful, shaking mess of a self took off (with hindsight, my appearance might have looked suspicious and been why they swabbed my hands for drugs!)
Once I made it to Boston I went straight to bed, ready to start my day early, and that I did. I made my way to Old South Meeting House, a museum about Boston and protest history and then I went to Boston Common, a public park in the city. Although I wasnt even planning to go, i took a tour of tge State Capitol and then spent a couple of hours observing the Massachusetts House of Representatives. They discussed things like expansion of aid to Vietnam veterans and changes to policies about current military personnel. My politics nerd was happy! Afterwards I took a walk out to the Skywalk which was surprisingly empty so I pretty much had the view to myself, and it was awesome. Year abroad seems to be going up high things and looking down!! Dinner was Chipotle in the park watching the sun set.
The following day was the JFK Presidential Library. Ive studied JFK and his presidency a lot so I felt pretty in my element. At one point an old couple started talking to me because apparently I was mouthing along to a video of the inaugural address. Nerd. Next I went to the Cheers bar, I didnt drink anything but I had fun nonetheless. No one shouted 'NORM' when I walked in so I was a bit gutted. My parents love Cheers and have passed it on to me!
I then went to the Holocaust Memorial and then walked most of the freedom trail until I was too tired and went home.
The next morning i had to check out so lugged all my bags to the bunker hill monument. I was going to spend my last day walking around but sadly my bags where too awkward and heavy so i ended up spending most of the day in the airport- luckily I enjoy airports!
After a late night staying up chatting with Emily, Sam and Heather (Swansea Uni friends!) in Baltimore, Emily and I headed to DC. I went there for 2 of the days i stayed in Baltimore. The first day there we saw a police parade, all of the famous and historic monuments and even treated ourselves to a cheeky Nandos which was a strange novelty. A small panic attack type situation at a train station in Baltimore, on my own, at night, with a dead phone and swollen foot meant I chickened out of going to DC but thankfully on my third day staying in Baltimore Heather told me I'd regret not going so I did spend another day in the Capitol with Emily. We didn't meet Obama even though we tweeted him and asked him out for coffee, but nevertheless we had a great time!
