While we were in Taunton, we found lots of interesting things to do and explore. It's a lovely town to visit, even in the British winter!

Weird New England: Dighton Rock
When you are living in New England you are a living in one of the oldest parts of the United States. The European colonial settlements have been around for more that 300 years and there is a lot of good evidence that this area of the continent was visited by many other pre-Columbian civilizations.
Being that this area of the county is so old, there are a lot of strange and weird things that exist right here in my backyard. So, I thought it might me fun to show you some of them.
One of the places I have strange things I have always wanted to see is Dighton Rock, which is a 40-ton boulder, about 11 feet long and 5 feet high, originally found in the Taunton River as far back as 1677—according to the Dighton Historical Society.
During high tide the rock was under water, but at low tide it was clearly visible and what made it interesting was the strange carvings found its face. In 1690, reverend Cotton Mather wrote this about the rock…
“Among the other Curiosities of New-England, one is that of a mighty Rock, on a perpendicular side whereof by a River, which at High Tide covers part of it, there are very deeply Engraved, no man alive knows how or when about half a score lines, near ten-foot-long, and a foot and half broad, filled with strange characters…”
Over the years many people alleged to have deciphered the carvings, claiming them to be of Carthaginian origin, or Phoenician, Hebrew, Portuguese, Latin, Viking, or they may just be some doodles done by the one of the Native New England Tribes. The truth is that these carvings remain a mystery to this day, some 340 years later.
In 1955, the rock was moved from its original location to where it sits now in Dighton Rock State Park.
When I decided to go see the rock, it was July 4th of 2018, a hot and muggy day with me having nothing to do but take a little motorcycle ride. So, I figured out a route, packed a lunch and headed down. I also called ahead to make sure the park was open on the holiday, which they told me it was.
Well, being that this is New England and things do not always work like you would think they should…when I got to there, the museum that houses the rock was locked tight. It tuns out that I did not scroll far enough down the page, in the “More Info” section, and see that the rock is only viewable by prior appointment.
But, I had a great ride down, and back, and leisurely ate my lunch by the banks of the Taunton river. All in all, not a bad day. At some point I hope to make in down there again and actually be able to view the rock in person.

Falmouth (pronunciation: /ˈfælmᵻθ/ FAL-mith) is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States; Barnstable County is coextensive with Cape Cod. The population was 31,532 at the 2010 census, making Falmouth the second-largest municipality on Cape Cod after Barnstable. The terminal for the Steamship Authority ferries to Martha's Vineyard is located in the village of Woods Hole in Falmouth. Woods Hole also contains several scientific organizations such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), the Woods Hole Research Center, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, and the scientific institutions' various museums.

Falmouth was first settled by English colonists in 1660 and was officially incorporated in 1686. Bartholomew Gosnold named the settlement for Falmouth, Cornwall, England, his home port. Early principal activities were farming, salt works, shipping, whaling, and sheep husbandry, which was very popular due to the introduction of Merino sheep and the beginnings of water-powered mills that could process the wool. In 1837, Falmouth averaged about 50 sheep per square mile.
Falmouth saw brief action in the War of 1812, when the area around Falmouth Heights, on its southern coast, was bombarded by several British frigates and ships of the line, and Massachusetts militia hastily entrenched themselves on the beaches to repulse a possible British landing which never came. By 1872, the train had come to Falmouth and Woods Hole, and some of the first summer homes were established. By the late 19th century, cranberries were being cultivated and strawberries were being raised for the Boston market. Large-scale dairying was tried in the early 20th century in interior regions. After the improvement in highways, and thanks in part to the heavy use of neighboring Otis Air National Guard Base during World War II, population growth increased significantly. Large homebuilding booms occurred in the 1970s, followed by others in the 1980s and 1990s.
In the late 1800s, after railroad service was established between Boston and Cape Cod, James Madison Beebe bought over 700 acres (280 ha) and built Highfield Hall, which is now a museum, and much of the land is preserved as Beebe Woods.
In 1965, Robert Manry sailed from Falmouth aboard his 13.5-foot (4.1 m) sailboat and reached Falmouth, England, 78 days later

Seekonk, Massachusetts is a suburban community on the Rhode Island border. Incorporated in 1812 from the western half of Rehoboth, Seekonk features rolling hills and unspoilt wetlands, with extensive swamp acreage in the central portions of the town. During King Philip's War, settlers fled the Seekonk area and took refuge in several Garrison houses to the north and south. Historians speculate that the buildings in town suffered severe damage during the war; it was probably after 1676 that settlers began filtering back into Seekonk.
The community remained basically agricultural into the 20th century, although the Kent Manufacturing Company did make tennis racquets and croquet sets on the upper reaches of the Tenmile River.
