Toamasina [toˈmasinə̥], meaning like salt or salty, unofficially and in French also Tamatave, is the capital of the Atsinanana region on the east coast of Madagascar on the Indian Ocean. The city is the chief seaport of the country, situated 215 km northeast of its capital and biggest city Antananarivo, near the centre of the eastern coast at 18 10 S, 49 32 E. According to the 2013 official estimate, Toamasina had a population of 274,667. The city is served by Toamasina Airport.

It lies close enough to Maroantsetra for a day trip, although an overnight stay is recommended for seeing the nocturnal aye-aye.

Access to the town is mainly by air, with regular connections to Toamasina and Antananarivo or by sea. While Route Nationale 5 runs south along the coast to Mananara Nord and Toamasina, it is little more than a forest track for much of its length and frequently impassable. There are no roads into the town from the north or west.
