Minneapolis ist mit rund 385.000 Einwohnern - in der Metropolregion wohnen ca. 3,3 Mio. - die größte Stadt in Minnesota. Mit Saint Paul zusammen werden sie Twin Cities genannt die auf beiden Seiten am Mississippi liegen. Die Stadt hat ihren Namen aus einer Kombination zweier Sprachen: die Silbe Minne kommt von den Dakota-Indianern und bedeutet Wasser sowie dem griechischen polis für Stadt.
Der elf Kilometer südlich der Innenstadt liegende Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) ist mit 37,5 Mio. Passagieren ein wichtiger Flughafen in den USA, aber natürlich nicht so gigantisch wie die Nummer 1 in Atlanta mit rund 104 Mio. Passagieren im letzten Jahr. 2016 hat Frankfurt zum Vergleich rund 61,5 Mio. Fluggäste gehabt. Von Frankfurt aus gibt es Direktflüge nach Minneapolis und das teilweise sogar sehr günstig beispielsweise mit Condor.
Minneapolis mit seiner Zwillingsstadt Saint Paul bilden zusammen auch einen kulturellen Schwerpunkt im Mittleren Westen der USA. So haben beide Städte nach New York die meisten Theater. Darüber hinaus hat Minneapolis viele hervorragende Museen wie beispielsweise das Minneapolis Institute of Arts und das Walker Art Center mit seinem bekannten und gerade frisch renoviertem Skulpturen-Garten.
Minneapolis ist eine sehr sportliche Stadt mit bekannten Mannschaften in vielen Sportarten. Neben den Minnesota Vikings in der National Football League (NFL), der Eishockeymannschaft Minnesota Wild (NHL) gibt es zudem die Minnesota Twins in der Major League Baseball (MLB) und das Fußball-Team Minnesota United FC (MLS). Während meiner Reise waren die ersten beiden Teams leider schon in der Sommerpause. Deshalb war ich bei einem Baseball- und Fußballspiel live im Stadion...
Anfang Oktober findet seit 1982 der Twin Cities Marathon mit Start in Minneapolis und Ziel in Saint Paul statt. Wegen dem kombinierten Streckenverlauf der Zwillingsstädte und ihrer Natur nennt der Veranstalter diesen Marathon auch den schönsten urbanen Marathon in Amerika.
Typisch für die Twin Cities sind die vielseitigen Möglichkeiten sich in Minneapolis und Saint Paul fortzubewegen, denn neben dem guten öffentlichen Verkehrssystem von Bus und Bahn sind beide Städte besonders fahrradfreundlich.
Eine weitere städtebauliche Besonderheit in Minneapolis sind die sogenannten Skyways. Das sind kilometerlange, geschlossene Fußwege oberhalb der Straßen die von Hochhaus zu Hochhaus führen und so Parkhäuser, Geschäfte, Hotels, Restaurants und viele weitere Gebäude in der Innenstadt miteinander verbinden. Diese Übergange sind öffentlich zugänglich und bieten Schutz vor der Hitze im Sommer und der Kälte im Winter.

The Duluth MSA had a population of 279,771 in 2010, the second largest in Minnesota.
