Vermillion is a city in and the county seat of Clay County, in the southeastern corner of the state of South Dakota, and the eleventh largest city in the state. According to the 2010 Census, the population was 10,571. The city lies atop a bluff near the Missouri River. The area has been home to various Native American tribes for centuries.     The Lewis and Clark Recreation Area is a South Dakota State Recreation Area in southeastern South Dakota, United States, near Yankton. The recreation area was established following the construction of Gavins Point Dam by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which created Lewis and Clark Lake, a reservoir on the Missouri River. The recreation area opened to the public in 1966.Three campgrounds are located within the recreation area, called the Yankton Section, Midway Section, and Gavins Point Section - with a total of 418 campsites, along the shores of Lewis and Clark Lake. There are 19 camper cabins. Numerous biking, hiking, equestrian, and nature trails travel along Lewis and Clark Lake and the surrounding bluffs.
