    The Jamestown settlement in the Colony of Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. It was located on the east bank of the Powhatan River about 2.5 mi southwest of the center of modern Williamsburg. William Kelso writes that Jamestown is where the British Empire began. It was established by the Virginia Company of London as James Fort on May 4, 1607 O.S.;, and was considered permanent after brief abandonment in 1610. It followed several failed attempts, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke, established in 1585 on Roanoke Island.     Spiro Theodore Agnew was the 39th Vice President of the United States from 1969 until his resignation in 1973. He is the second and most recent officeholder to resign the position, after John C. Calhoun in 1832. Agnew was born in Baltimore, to an American-born mother and a Greek immigrant father. He attended Johns Hopkins University, graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law, and entered the United States Army in 1941. Agnew served as an officer during World War II, earning the Bronze Star, and was recalled for service during the Korean War in 1951.
