Many Latvians and other Balts were imprisoned throughout the vast expanse of the Gulag. There were heavy concentrations of them across the entire northern part of European Russia including the Komi Republic camps of Kotlas, Ukhta, Inta and Pechora that approach and surround Vorkuta. They came in both the first deportation in 1941 and in the later deportations. They were made to work in timbering and railroad construction, then for settlement construction along the railroad. For example, 3,000 Balts were brought to Kotlas in 1941. Others were in the Abez-Inta group about 150 to 200 miles west of Vorkuta (coal mining, timbering, industrial prospecting for oil). Other Balts were forced to the Ust-Ukhta group near Vorkuta, with about 30 camps, and the Ust-Vym complex of 22 stations on the Vologda-Kotlas-Ukhta railroad line. There were more in large-scale lumber transport on the Vym and Vchedga rivers. The Pechora area had many camps in a region of dense forests. Pechora also contained a transit prison that sent laborers to many sites, including Kozhva, Ukhta, and Vorkuta. With the second Soviet occupation of the Baltic States at the end of World War II, a great number of Baltic citizens were forced into the Gulag. This continued through the early 1950s, when another large group of Baltic nationals were brought to these camps. These were young, patriotic Baltic citizens, members of anti-Soviet partisan groups from all three Baltic states. They, along with all of the Balts in the Gulag, were treated as political prisoners sentenced under the comprehensive Article 58 of the USSR criminal code.

Two drivers and a videographer will pilot their Toyota and Adventure Trailer up the frozen Mackenzie River Delta and out on to the Arctic Ocean and lands end.
Polar bear attacks woman in Chukotka
A group of polar bears-cannibals have attacked a small town Cape Schmidt in Region Chukotka in Russia's Far East. Witnesses insist one person was eaten alive -- and have pictures of her picked-over remains. Meanwhile, more attacks are reported to have taken place.

Three young polar bears have appeared in the small town Cape Schmidt in Region Chukotka several days ago and settled in a former pigsty. Around 23:00 on Friday Ettuvge Stanislaw (born in 1979) was directed to work in the boiler room and went straight through the coal depot, where he was attacked by three white bear , -- told Chatterbox. On Saturday, law enforcement officers shot and killed three bears: the bear that killed a man and a bear cub, which was directed to the village, said the official. However, the two bears living in the pigsty, escaped from the town. Polar bears do not have to be in towns and in contact with people. Currently, there are effective means of deterrence of polar bears and, of course, places like Cape Schmidt and other localities along the Arctic coast of Chukotka should be provided with such means. When polar bears are in the town -- this is an emergency situation , -- says the Chatterbox. Unfortunately, a few days was not taken the necessary measures for the expulsion of dangerous animals out of the settlement, he added.
A horrifying video shows polar bears attacking people in a small town in Russia's Chukotka Autonomous Region. The bears appeared to be living in abandoned houses and were roaming the town in small groups of five. At the end of August, the animals were chased away from the town, but not before local people had endured a living hell at the hands of the unwelcome guests.
This video shows a young woman, apparently drunk and on the point of relieving herself near an abandoned house. Suddenly, a bear attacks. Passersby shouts to the girl to run away. Then they start throwing bottles at the bear in the hope of saving the girl's life. It works -- the bear runs off and leaves his victim alive, though badly injured.
