It lies approximately 8 kilometres north-east of Ruciane-Nida, 16 km north-west of Pisz, and 75 km east of the regional capital Olsztyn. Before 1945 the area was part of Germany . Wolf's Lair was Adolf Hitler's first Eastern Front military headquarters in World War II. The complex, which became one of several Führerhauptquartiere in various parts of eastern Europe, was built for the start of Operation Barbarossa – the invasion of the Soviet Union – in 1941.
