Winchendon is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,300 at the 2010 census. The town includes the villages of Waterville and Winchendon Springs . A census-designated place, also named Winchendon, is defined within the town for statistical purposes. The Winchendon State Forest, a 174.5 acres parcel, is located within the township as is Otter River State Forest; both recreational areas are managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation

It comprises a small portion of the 4,221 acres of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Birch Hill Flood Control Project that are managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and that also include Otter River State Forest.

On a mostly clear enroute winter day, a Chicago-to-Boston flight climbs above Chicago's northern suburbs before crossing Lake Michigan to fly east along Michigan's I-94 corridor. Cloud deck below clears just west of Detroit, affording view of the expanse of metropolitan Detroit, followed by Lake St. Clair separating the State of Michigan from the Province of Ontario. After glimpses at a few southwestern Ontario agricultural towns, the flight path hugs the Ontario shore of eastern Lake Erie, providing view of Great Lakes steamer-era ports and current-era summer resort towns. Flight re-enters the U.S. south of Buffalo NY, bringing views of a couple of Upstate New York's Finger Lakes before cloud deck returns until western Massachusetts. The opening reveals pioneer-era mill towns established during America's early industrialization era along one New England river. Salem, Massachusetts, comes into full view as the flight approaches the Atlantic coast to circle to land to the west at Boston Logan Airport.

King Philip's Rock

This is a granite outcrop in south-central Massachusetts. King Philip was the English name for Metacomet, son of Massasoit (friend to the Pilgrims). He became very famous when he sought to eradicate the evil English who were seeking to subjugate the native's ways, culture, religion...
King Philip's War took place in 1675/1676, most of it in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. More men died per capita than in any other American related war in history. In southern New England virtually every town has something named after King Philip. It was said, but not proven, that King Philip once used this rock outcropping as a camp, a place from which he could see his enemies coming. Today it is wooded and beautiful with miles of hiking trails and areas below from which canoes and kayaks can be set in the river. Some of my best canoeing memories are from this area. It's also a great place from which to observe wildlife, especially birds.
