Brown's party of 22 was defeated by a company of U.S. Marines, led by First Lieutenant Israel Greene. Colonel Robert E. Lee was in overall command of the operation to retake the arsenal. John Brown had originally asked Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, both of whom he had met in his transformative years as an abolitionist in Springfield, Massachusetts, to join him in his raid, but Tubman was prevented by illness and Douglass declined, as he believed Brown's plan would fail.

Driving Scenic Route 11 in Shenandoah Valley Virginia

Driving I-81 at exit 257, and followed Rt. 11 north through New Market, Mt. Jackson, and stopped filming in Woodstock (all VA). Large sections of Rt. 11 are considered a scenic byway but think Rt. 40. Before the interstate, this was the highway, so there's some sprawl in little towns and sections of it run right through Staunton, Harrisonburg and Roanoke, making it very congested decidedly non-scenic. This part above (check out the google map of the area) runs right along this big mountain ridge so it's lovely.
