Woolwine is an unincorporated community in northern Patrick County, Virginia, United States. The western terminus of State Route 40 is here, at State Route 8. The community lies in the Rocky Knob American Viticultural Area. Two covered bridges are located in Woolwine: the Jack's Creek Covered Bridge and the more recent Clifford Wood Covered Bridge which is privately owned. They span the Smith River. The Bob White Covered Bridge , which also spanned the Smith River, was destroyed during flooding on September 29, 2015. Woolwine has an elevation of 430 metres . 1. Virginia Creeper Trail Damascus
The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 35-mile multi-purpose rail trail, located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area of southwestern Virginia. The trail runs from Abingdon to Whitetop, Virginia, near the North Carolina state line – through National Forest and crossing numerous restored trestles and crossing the Appalachian Trail. The trail descends from Abingdon to Damascus, traversing rolling farm countryside and numerous parcels of private property – requiring opening and closing private gates along the route. From Damascus, hikers, cyclists and equestrians ascend to Whitetop, following Laurel Creek. Cyclists can use a shuttle service to Whitetop for the 17-mile return descent.

Road Trip #360 - Virginia State Route 8 - Blue Ridge Parkway to US Highway 58 (Woolwine Highway)

In July 2018, we took a trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and we'll eventually be publishing that video--as soon as we have the entire parkway from end to end...this will require one more trip to accomplish. At the end of day 1 of our trip, we decided to divert to Winston-Salem, NC for the night. This was a big mistake, as we didn't realize that it would be almost a 3 hour drive from the Parkway. During this trip, we drove Virginia State Route 8, which later becomes North Carolina State Route 8. This interesting little highway twists and turns through the mountains and has some steep grades, and some of the best scenery we saw on this trip. Here it is! The weather was nice throughout most of this video with a short rain shower near the middle. Note the vintage Motel right off the Parkway, and abandoned buildings after we pass through the town of Woolwine.

Road Trip #361 - Virginia State Route 8 South - US-58 to North Carolina State Line (Stuart)

We continue along Virginia SR-8, heading south. SR-8 briefly runs concurrent with US Highway 58 East, and then splits away and goes through the town of Stuart. SR-8 doubles as US-58 Business into town, and then SR-8 makes a right turn, avoiding the town center. An SR-8 business route runs through the downtown area. After leaving Stuart, we continue all the way to the North Carolina State Line where we conclude our video.
