Wounded Knee is a census-designated place in Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The town is named for the Wounded Knee Creek which runs through the region. The bones and heart of the Sioux chief Crazy Horse were reputedly buried along this creek by his family following his death in 1877. The town lies within the Pine Ridge Reservation, territory of the Oglala Lakota .

1. Wounded Knee Massacre Monument Wounded Knee
The Wounded Knee Massacre occurred on December 29, 1890, near Wounded Knee Creek on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The previous day, a detachment of the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment commanded by Major Samuel M. Whitside intercepted Spotted Elk's band of Miniconjou Lakota and 38 Hunkpapa Lakota near Porcupine Butte and escorted them 5 miles westward to Wounded Knee Creek, where they made camp. The remainder of the 7th Cavalry Regiment, led by Colonel James W. Forsyth, arrived and surrounded the encampment. The regiment was supported by a battery of four Hotchkiss mountain guns.On the morning of December 29, the U.S. Cavalry troops went into the camp to disarm the Lakota. Driving through South Dakota, Part 1: Oh, the Beauty! Oh, the Horror!

I drove down I-90 through South Dakota which, much like the rest of middle America, is flat with rolling hills and endless cornfields. The swirling snow that danced along the highway like a quasi-sentient fog was beautiful and terrifying.

Native American - Traditional War Dance

The Traditional War Dance is performed by Gary Wis-Ki-Ge-Amatyuk Jr. and his family comes from the Prairie Band Indian reservation in Kansas. The singer is Scott With Horn who is a Lakota Sioux and his family comes from the Crow Creek Reservation in Fort Thompson, South Dakota.

Buffalo Soldiers - Service on the Frontier

As the United States moved westward, settlement and expansion hinged on protection by the military. Two African American cavalry regiments, known as the Buffalo Soldiers, were placed in the tense and tenuous position between Native Americans and European settlers. They also worked on infrastructure, like the railroads and telegraph lines that made westward expansion possible. For Buffalo Soldiers, military service offered the opportunity for a better life, and a greater level of independence and respect for their rights not yet widely found in American society.
