Wytheville is a town in, and the county seat of, Wythe County, in western Virginia, United States. It is named after George Wythe, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, and mentor to Thomas Jefferson. Wytheville's population was 8,211 at the 2010 census. Interstate Highways 77 and 81 were constructed to intersect at the town, long a crossroads for travelers. During the American Civil War, Wytheville had a strategic importance. It was attacked in 1863 and 1865 . The town is the birthplace of Edith Bolling Wilson, second wife of President Woodrow Wilson.

1. Old Salem Museums & Gardens Winston Salem
Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It features a living history museum that interprets the restored Moravian community. The non-profit organization began its work in 1950, although some private residents had restored buildings earlier. As the Old Salem Historic District, it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966. The district showcases the culture of the Moravian settlement in North Carolina during the 18th and 19th centuries, communal buildings, churches, houses, and shops.Two buildings are individually designated as NHL: the Salem Tavern and the Single Brothers' House. My wife, our dog, and I just moved from Austin, TX to Front Royal, VA.
A straight shot would have taken about 23 hours, but we took 4 days to enjoy the route.
Corpus, Christi, TX (1:01) to Houston (3:16) to New Orleans (5:02) stopped in The World's Largest Firework Store (6:25)
to Atlanta (6:47) to Nantahala National Forest (8:46) toTennessee (11:08) .
We made it to our destination at 1 AM on July 4th.

I-77 through southwestern Virginia

This video shows I-77 southbound from Bluefield, WV, through the East River Mountain tunnel into Virginia and on to the I-81 interchange at Wytheville. In my opinion this is one of the prettiest and most scenic mountain drives in all of the eastern United States. It's beautiful in the middle of summer and even more pretty un the fall.

Driving Scenic Route 11 in Shenandoah Valley Virginia

Driving I-81 at exit 257, and followed Rt. 11 north through New Market, Mt. Jackson, and stopped filming in Woodstock (all VA). Large sections of Rt. 11 are considered a scenic byway but think Rt. 40. Before the interstate, this was the highway, so there's some sprawl in little towns and sections of it run right through Staunton, Harrisonburg and Roanoke, making it very congested decidedly non-scenic. This part above (check out the google map of the area) runs right along this big mountain ridge so it's lovely.
