Zhytomyr is a city in the north of the western half of Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Zhytomyr Oblast , as well as the administrative center of the surrounding Zhytomyr Raion . The city of Zhytomyr is not a part of Zhytomyr Raion: the city itself is designated as its own separate raion within the oblast; moreover Zhytomyr consists of two so-called raions in a city: Bohunskyi Raion and Koroliovskyi Raion . Zhytomyr occupies an area of 65 square kilometres . Its population is 266,936. Zhytomyr is a major transportation hub. The city lies on a historic route linking the city of Kiev with the west through Brest. Today it links Warsaw with Kiev...

Saint Sophia's Cathedral is a Catholic temple that serves as the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kyiv-Zhytomyr, Ukraine. The temple was built between 1746 and 1748 and was founded by Bishop Samuel Jan Ozga. After a fire in 1768, the temple was converted into a building of three ships in the classical style. The church is now an eclectic building with a preserved Baroque interior. In Soviet times, was closed to the faithful for several years, the priests were arrested and sent to labor camps. Since 1991, after the fall of communism the cathedral was restored and enlarged.

Четвёртый по величине город Западной Украины.
Расположен на реке Серет. Город находится в центре Западной Украины, здесь пересекаются важные автомобильные и железнодорожные пути.
Одно из древнейших сооружений города, сохранившихся до наших дней, — Старый замок (Также известен как «Тернопольский замок»). В 1540 году польский король Сигизмунд I выдал грамоту краковскому каштеляну Яну Амору Тарновскому на учреждение города и владения землёй вокруг него. Строительство крепости на берегу Серета в местности Сопильче (Топильче) длилось восемь лет.

Кроме Старого замка, сохранилась «Надпрудная церковь» — Воздвижения Честного Креста, которая была сооружена в начале XVI века на фундаменте древнего храма, история которого восходит ко временам Древнерусского государства. Здание — это трёхчастный храм без куполов. Вторую церковь — Рождества Христова, как удостоверяет надпись, начали строить 15 июня 1602 года и закончили 4 августа 1608 года под руководством известного каменщика Леонтия.
