Zion National Park: 10 Things to Know Before You Go

Things YOU need to know before YOU go to Zion National Park in Utah. Zion National Park is big… 229 square miles! Zion's perpendicular cliffs are nearly 3,000 feet high. Unlike other canyon parks - where many visitors view the canyons from their rims - Zion draws visitors to its floor. Elevation: Lowest 3,666 ft and a high elevation of 8,726 ft at Horse Ranch Mountain.

Admission is for a week
$35 per vehicle
$20 per pedestrian

Getting In:
Zion is located in the South west corner of Utah.
The closest major airports are:
150 Miles from Las Vegas
Or 300 Miles from Salt Lake City
Driving time that’s about 3 hours from Vegas, 4.5 hours from Salt Lake City, or 8 hours from Los Angeles
There’s a couple of other small airports closer by, Saint George is just 49 miles from the park, and Cedar City is 60 miles

In the high season Summer & WInter Holidays, you have to take a shuttle in to the park, so you have to park your car in Springdale.

If you want to drive your car in, most people recommend getting in by 10am before all the lots fill up.

Getting Around:

Springdale operates a shuttle service within the town to take you from your parking lot or hotel to the park entrance.

The NPS operates another shuttle that runs on the scenic drive in the park making 9 stops.

Visitor Information
There are 2 visitor centers, the main one in Springdale, and another, the Kolob Canyon Visitor Center is located off of Interstate 15 at the west entrance of the park

Lodging

4 options in the park

3 Campgrounds -- only the Watchman Campground is open year round

1 Hotel, the Zion Lodge -- in 2019 it’s about $220 a night

Reservations for the Lodge can be made up to 13 months in advance. Starting with the 1st of each month, the calendar opens for that whole month in the following year. The Lodge books quickly

But tons of hotels just outside the park in Springdale.

You can also stay in St. George which is about a 45 minute drive from the park.

What to bring:

Everything you need to be in a canyon for day, at least water, sunscreen. You can refill your water in the park at the Zion Lodge, Campgrounds, or Visitors Centre.

And if you’re hungry, the Zion Lodge serves breakfast and dinner… or pack a picnic from the supermarket in Springdale.

Food:

Rositas in Springdale -- pretty good Santa Fe Style Mexican food

Subway:

Yes -- Zion has a subway! But it’s not a mode of transportation - it’s a hiking trail! It’s so popular, it requires permits in advance that are gained through a lottery. And it’s hard! Think rappelling with 60 feet of rope, and swimming through cold murky water!

When to go:

The park is open year round. Most visitors come during Spring and Fall. Campgrounds March-October. There are fewer visitors December - March (with the exception of Christmas break).

For more info about Angels landing:

-Get an early morning start to beat the heat
-Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
-Bring plenty of water and snacks
-Please be advised, if you are afraid of heights do not go past Scout Lookout
-There is a latrine in Scout Lookout
-Past Scout Lookout there is only one trail to ascend and descend, be courteous the trail in some parts is only wide enough for one person at a time, yield to other hikers.
-Do not go if it is getting dark, if it rains or if it is icy.

For more info about the narrows:

-The trail is 16 miles, we only did 6 miles round trip.
-Check flash flood conditions in the visitors center
-Wear closed toe shoes or sturdy boots with ankle support, not sandals or water shoes
-Water temperature can be extremely cold even in summer time, it is recommended to take neoprene socks.
-Carry out all trash
-Carry one gallon of drinking water per person per day
-Take a fleece or windbreaker, The Narrows is much cooler than other parts of the park
-Pack gear in waterproof bags
-Remember to use the restrooms at the riverside walk trails head before hiking. There are no toilets in the narrows.

We spent three days at Zion National Park and hiked the best of it!

Angel's Landing - one of the most exciting hikes at Zion. With steep drop-offs on both sides, it's an exhilarating hike - especially at the top!

The Narrows is the most popular hike at Zion. We hiked through knee-high to waist high waters up and down the Narrows.

The Subway hike is Zion's self-proclaimed best hike at the national park and a place you'll have to see in person.

Top 10 'Hidden' Tourist Attractions In Utah

1. Mystic Hot Springs

The water comes out of the ground at 168 degrees Fahrenheit (75 degrees C.) and at 200 gallons/minute. As the water flows, the minerals cool and form layers of rock. This spring has been flowing out continuously for millions of years.Over time, the mineral buildup has created a mound that is a mile accross, 200 ft deep, 200 yards wide.
As the water travels through a channel, it cools down, and it is then contained in 8 bathtubs and 2 concrete pools. The pools and tubs are kept between 98 and 110 degrees Fahrenheit so you are bound to find something you like. The temperatures can always be adjusted as necessary. The bathtubs are cleaned every morning. The pools are cleaned once or twice a week. The water contains lots of calcium, magnesium, and iron, which makes it best for soaking. We don't recommend it for drinking, however, if you would like to drink it, we advise you to acquire it from the source in a glass container and drink 1 oz per day at the most.
Tubs 7 and 8 are usually the hottest. Five minutes in these tubs can do wonders on aching muscles.

2. Stewart Falls

Stewart Falls is one of the most scenic and photogenic waterfalls in northern Utah. It falls in two tiers and is over 200 feet tall. It is a moderate hike through a beautiful forest on the east side of Mt Timpanogos.

The trail is well-marked and easy to follow. The descent from the ridge down to the base of the falls is quite steep (youngsters should be held in check at that point) but this is a great family hike. Summer is a good time to make the trek, and fall is even better because colored leaves are magnificent.


3. Hole N' The Rock
Visit Hole N The Rock, a most unique home, carved out of a huge rock in Utah's Canyonlands Country. This historic 5,000 square foot home and unusual gift shop and trading post are open all year. Take a guided tour of the home, and appreciate the rich history within it's walls.

Angel's Landing - Scariest Hike in America? Steep Drop off - Zion National Park, Utah

One of the Scariest and Spectacular hikes in North America. Here's a look at how Angels landing looks like with steep drop offs of 1,000 feet on both sides. Video shows me going up and down Angels Landing. It's one of the most popular hiking trails in Zion National Park, Utah. It's also listed as one of the top 10 hikes in North America.

Definitely make this one of the hikes on your bucket list.

Every time we approach a national park I have the same overwhelming feeling of being very small, amazed and extremely fortunate. National parks are America's greatest asset and the fact that we are allowed to explore them is a gift. Zion National park is no exception.
