Zuidlaren is a village in the province of Drenthe in the Northern Netherlands. Zuidlaren has just over 10,000 inhabitants and is situated on natural heightened land which is called the Hondsrug. The village is part of the municipality of Tynaarlo. Formerly the village had its own municipality called Zuidlaren, but in 1998 Zuidlaren merged with Eelde and Vries. The new municipality was called Zuidlaren at first, but was renamed to Tynaarlo in 1999. Tynaarlo is the name of a much smaller village than Zuidlaren and is located between the 3 largest villages of the municipality: Eelde, Zuidlaren and Vries. So guess what? I am currently living in a castle. In Europe. I have to keeping telling myself this as a reminder that no, I am not fantasizing. As if seeing the gorgeous medieval structure each time I walk outside isn't enough. As if I didn't travel for a day (including the boring six- hour plane ride in which I sat next to a grumpy non-English speaking Italian man) and lose a whole night of sleep. Alas, despite such things, it still feels like an incredible dream come true. I arrived in the airport in Amsterdam on Friday around 8 AM European time. We soon took a 2-hour bus ride through the nice, yet incredibly sleep-inducing when you are jet lagged, Netherlands countryside. We arrived in Well, Netherlands in the early afternoon and got our first glimpse of Kasteel Well through the pouring rain. We crossed the bridge over the first moat, walked through two large arched red doors into a beautiful courtyard, crossed the bridge over the second moat, and entered the Main Castle. There we had a day of orientation. The staff we've met are amazing because A. are so helpful B. are incredibly kind and easy-going and C. they all have Dutch/European accents. I am rooming with 3 of my girlfriends in the largest student dorm room in the castle! It is so spacious with 2 bunk beds, 2 very large windows that open up to a beautiful view of both moats, a bridge, and the backyard of the castle. We feel like princesses. Sometimes we get carried away and believe that we actually are. Kasteel Well is a breathtaking medieval castle. Its first foundations were built in the 12th century. It was torn down and rebuilt several times until the early 1600's when it took 40 years for the castle to be restored to the structure it is today. It had been unoccupied for hundreds of years, until 1985 when Emerson College rented the property for their students to study abroad. And the program has continued successfully every semester for the past 22 years! Last night (Saturday), we ventured to the small city of Venlo via a half hour bus ride. We walked around the city until later evening, when we tried our first Dutch beers -WAY better than American beer, if you were wondering. Venlo had nice quaint streets, some lined with shops, others lined with bars and restaurants. I am thoroughly enjoying my time in Europe thus far. We just got in from a two-hour boat cruise on the Maas River in Well where we drank wine and enjoyed the scenic route. They actually called it a booze cruise, a term my Dad uses often in Maine. I begin classes tomorrow and am very excited for them. This Friday to Sunday we will be exploring the city of Amsterdam -I will write another blog after that adventure! I miss & love all of my friends and family so much! I hope you enjoy the entry and my photography skills. Talk to you next blog :)
