Our Beautiful Village - Burton in Kendal, Cumbria

The Great South East – City of Logan

The City of Logan is one of Queensland’s largest cities and it holds a surprising array of natural attractions, cultures and urban adventures. The Great South East uncovers some of these hidden gems in an episode packed with highlights.

We were living in Horsham West Sussex UK and used this as our base for our UK and European travels. Horsham is in South East, England 50 km south west of London and about 30 km north west of Brighton. Aparently the name means either horse home or Horsa's home (a Saxon warrior who was granted land in the area.
From Horsham we drive down the M20 towards Folkestone which is a port town on the English Channel, in Kent, south-east England. Folkestone harbour's use has diminished since the opening of the nearby Channel Tunnel although its use has increased dramatically due to the construction of the 'Harbour Arm' which holds cafés, pubs and bands.
We stayed at the Grand Burstin Hotel which is across from the beach. It was built in 1984 to resemble a ship in port. It was really enjoyable staying there but it doesn't seem to have changed much since it was built. Although we were lucky enough to get a room at the top of the hotel in the Bridge of the ship and the views from the top looking out over the English Channel were amazing.
We visited the Royal Military Canal where Katy used to work. If you get a chance, take a paddle in one of the boats. We were lucky enough to do so with a bottle of wine. A perfect way to spend a warm peaceful afternoon.
We had some time to hike along the canal past West Hythe and up towards Lympne where there is a wildlife park. It was strange to go hiking through the English countryside to then be suddenly faced with a heard of Giraffes.
Next we drive to Dover with its iconic white cliffs. Dover is the main port between the UK and Europe so it does get quite busy. We pass Dover Castle which is up high on a hill overlooking the town. Then onwards to Deal, Ramsgate, Margate and then Canterbury with its famous cathedral and universities. From there we drive back though Brighton and then on to Lyme Regis which is famous for its fossil beach and Jurassic Coast
