Mayor Bowser Celebrates the Opening of Conrad Washington, DC - 4/9/19
Mayor Muriel Bowser and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Brian Kenner join executives from Hilton, Hines, and Qatari Diar to celebrate the grand opening of the Conrad Washington, DC, located at CityCenterDC.
“We all know Washington, DC is not only a great place to live and work – it’s also the best city in the world to visit and to do business in,” said Mayor Bowser. “Through private partnerships, we’re adding important hospitality options that create jobs for our residents and opportunities for our small businesses.”
The 360-room hotel, situated at the corner of New York Avenue and 10th Street NW, is the first for Conrad Hotels & Resorts in the nation’s capital. The hotel created approximately 800 construction jobs and 270 permanent jobs for the District and provided contracting opportunities valued at $72 million for 38 CBE companies during the construction phase, with additional CBEs to receive contracts during operations.
“We could not be more proud of our amazing team – many of whom are local residents – and are grateful for the talented crafts men and women that have played an important role in conceptualizing, building and opening this hotel,” said Laura Schofield, General Manager, Conrad Washington, DC. “Our owners Hines and Qatari Dari had a vision for this area – knitting together key ingredients to create a neighborhood filled with endless opportunities and experiences with our hotel as a focal point of design, art, comfort and community.”
Hines and Qatari Diar developed the Conrad Washington, DC in coordination with the District of Columbia, which continues to own the land associated with the project’s hotel and retail uses. DC-based real estate companies Bundy Development Corporation, The Jarvis Company, The Neighborhood Development Company, and Triden Development Group also are members of the development team and developer ownership.
Phase I of CityCenterDC, was completed in December 2013 and included 524,000 square feet of office space, 458 residential units, with 92 being affordable, and high-end retail options to Downtown. Presenting more than 30 world-class designer shops and boutiques, as well as some of the city’s best-known and critically acclaimed restaurants, CityCenterDC is a prized destination for both local Washingtonians and visitors.

Washington, DC to Seattle, WA: A Complete Road Trip
This video begins in Washington, DC around dawn on May 3, 2018 and concludes at SeaTac Airport in Sea-Tac, WA, just south of Seattle, in the late morning of May, 6, 2018. The drive was 3,084 miles (4,963 kilometers). All of this video was recorded in real-time, but this video is played back at 4x time-lapse speed. (The links to the real-time videos are below, and the hyper-lapse versions of this video will be uploaded at some point.) Nearly all of this entire video was done in the daytime; however, there is about a 20-minute section between Caldwell, Idaho and eastern Oregon done in darkness as it was before sunrise.
The states passed through are
District of Columbia (0:00:20-0:02:02)
Virginia (0:02:02-0:52:00)
West Virginia (0:52:00-1:36:28)
Kentucky (1:36:28-2:18:16)
Indiana (2:18:16-2:44:19)
Illinois (2:44:19-3:11:01)
Missouri (3:11:01-4:10:05)
Kansas (4:10:05-5:34:14)
Colorado (5:34:14-7:17:47)
Utah (7:17:47-8:27:32)
Idaho (8:27:32-9:20:40)
Oregon (9:20:40-10:04:18)
Washington (10:04:18-10:58:48)
The highest elevation of the drive was 11,158 feet (3,401 meters) at the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado (6:22:45), which was also the continental divide. The hottest temperature of the drive was 86 F (30 C) between western West Virginia and eastern Kentucky, as well as near Jerome, Idaho. The coldest temperature of the drive was 24 F (-5 C) at Vail Pass, Colorado (6:27:55).
This video is a long time coming, but it is finally uploaded. This is the first of many videos I will be uploading in the upcoming months. Unlike the CA-NY video, this video was entirely done in one trip with the same vehicle - a 2018 Nissan Pathfinder. Also, this video was shot using the Garmin Virb Ultra 30, which records GPS information. The position, elevation, and heading are shown on the video. Since 2/3 of all viewers of my videos are from outside the U.S., I set everything to metric. I plan to use English units for the real-time versions, however.

The National Zoo in Washington DC
This year i got to go along with my students on a trip to the National Zoo. They had worked for several weeks on an animal report using Internet research and the use of Powerpoint to present the information on their animal.
As part of that project, we took a trip to the DC zoo which is about 2 hrs away by school bus. The trouble was that it was a very quick trip.
We left about 9:30am so students could ride their buses to school and we returned about 2:30 so they could ride the buses home.....not long at all but a great time!
