Amsterdam's best art museum, the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands is a huge world-famous collection presented in 80 galleries, exhibiting 8,000 objects that tell the story of 800 years of Dutch art and history. This collection focuses primarily on Dutch paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries, rather than trying to present a complete sample of the entire world of art. The museum has a lot to show, thanks especially to the extreme genius of great native painters, Frans Hals, Vermeer, van Ruisdael, Jan Steen, and most-famously, Rembrandt.
Don’t miss out on the absolute highlights, like Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Van Gogh’s Self-portrait and a gorgeous collection of Delft Blue pottery ranging from tea sets to vases,
The total archive includes 1 million objects from the years 1200–2000, with more than 2,000 paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. Some 30 galleries are dedicated to the glory of the Golden Age, when the young mercantile republic led the world in trade, science, shipping and the arts.
Many objects from Dutch history tell the story with Paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, silver, porcelain, delftware, furniture, jewelry, costumes and more. There are also dozens of rooms with medieval arts and later decorative pieces of the 19th century, 17th century miniature house models, along with a sampling of minor Italian Renaissance paintings
The building itself is a major work of art, designed in neo-Gothic and Reneissance styles by Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the similar-looking Central Train Station, both completed in the 1880s. The red terra-cotta façade is adorned with many statues, decorative stripes, reliefs and ceramic plaques, using a mix of medieval and 19th century styles.

The Amsterdam Museum originally opened in 1926 and relocated in 1975. It features a collection that highlights the history of Amsterdam. It was relocated to a building that was used as a municipal orphanage from 1581-1960. It was originally a convent that was rebuilt in 1634.
Many of the original furnishing of the orphanage are displayed among the collection at the Amsterdam Museum which tells the story of the City from the Middle Ages forward. The museum maintains a collection of over 70,000 objects. Currently underway is a project to share the museum’s collection in high quality digital photos for the public. The digital collection currently includes over 25,000 photographs.
The display collection of the Amsterdam Museum includes paintings, models, archeological discoveries, photographs and artifacts not often discovered in history museums. These include an environmentally friendly vehicle from the 1960s named Witkar as well as a replica of the famed Café 't Mandje, an Avant Garde pub in the red-light district.
The museum is billed as a meeting place for those who want to learn about this 1,000-year-old city with its special relationship to water that has been the home to progressive thinkers throughout the centuries. It is more than the capital of the Netherlands, it has been the home to world trade, artists, entrepreneurs, a fabled red-light district as well as being at the forefront of the marijuana industry.
The Amsterdam Museum offers a unique multi-media presentation which gives a one-hour overview of the history of the City, titled Amsterdam DNA, one of its most popular exhibitions. In exploring the essence of the building that is now its home, a special attraction at the museum for children and parents is the presentation called, The Little Orphanage. This attraction geared for children from 4 to 12 years of age is an interactive presentation detailing the life of orphans in a 17th century orphanage. This is highly recommended for those visiting Amsterdam with young children.
Another special feature that goes beyond ordinary museum exhibitions is Amsterdam Gallery, a covered street that leads from Begijnensteeg to the museum. It displays group portraits from 1530 to the present in paintings and photographs as well as a 350-year-old wooden giant. Along with regular exhibitions and presentations, the museum features temporary exhibitions, guided tours and events.
Among the historical artifacts preserved and displayed by the Amsterdam Museum are works by one of the City’s most famous resident artist, Rembrandt. Larger than life portraits along with the art work from the Dutch Golden Age are displayed throughout the museum.
The Amsterdam Museum is open daily from 10 AM – 5 PM. Children are admitted free. An audio guide is included in the ticket price. The museum features a library, access to the online collection as well as a gift shop.
In the inner courtyard of the Amsterdam Museum is the setting for one of the most unique cafes in the world. The Mokum Museum Café is in the former cow shed of the Saint Lucien Monastery. The monastery was built in 1414, one of 21 built at the time. The building that currently houses the Amsterdam Museum was an active monastery until it became an orphanage in 1581.
Mokum Museum Café serves breakfast, lunch and early dinners in an historical space that was once the home to the cows of the nuns who occupied the monastery centuries ago. The space has been redesigned to offer patrons a relaxed informal dining area in an atmosphere that exudes the history of the 14-1500s.
When visiting the Amsterdam Museum, a visit to the Mokum Museum Café is a must if only to say that you ate in a cow shed from 1414. The café offers soups, salads, sandwiches, pastries, hot and cold beverages including beer and wine. It is worth spending some time at Mokum Museum Café if only for a drink. Eating in an historical cow shed may not even be on your bucket list but you can write it down and cross it off after you dine at Mokum Museum Café. Guaranteed you’ll talk about it till the cows come home.
The Amsterdam Museum is a must see for everyone who wants an overview of this 1000-year-old city that encompasses a rich history that goes beyond its age.

Though similar to a post-academic teaching facility, de Ateliers is not an educational institution. Its policy as a foundation is determined by the supervising artists.
Dominic van den Boogerd is its director; Elly Reurslag and Corine Lindenbergh are responsible for the day-to-day management.
As an internationally renowned institution, de Ateliers receives financial support from the Department of Culture of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences.
Amsterdam Single Viewer Gallery
The Single Viewer Gallery is a gesture of decontextualizing - the opposite of Marcel Duchamp's idea in which he placed a profane object in a sacral space, as The Single Viewer Gallery places sacral objects in the profane space of a toilet, thus making it sacral too.
Conceptual tradition was often associated with the development of the profane (Joseph Kosuth's chair, Ilya Kabakov's toilet, etc.). However, the Single Viewer Gallery is different from the above mentioned. Located outside the conventional space of a museum or a gallery, Single Viewer Gallery completely breaks down the exhibiting context, but does not break its functionality of everyday life, in the same time remaining a permanent exhibition space and not just a one-off project.
The Single Viewer Gallery already exists in Moscow and it is located in the wc of Arkady Nasonov's prived appartment (

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Thirty enormous 17th century group portraits from the collections of the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum are brought together for the first time and permanently on display in the Hermitage Amsterdam. These brothers and sisters of the Night Watch are unique in the world and rarely seen due to their size. They show us regents, archers and merchants from all different classes, backgrounds and religions, standing shoulder to shoulder like brothers.
The paintings show regents, militiamen and merchants from a variety of social and religious backgrounds. What they all have in common is worldly success – some of them were among the most powerful and prosperous citizens of the 17th-century Netherlands. And they were all, at the very least, wealthy enough to be immortalised together with their fellow guild members and trustees by some of the best painters of their age. This exhibition draws from the collections of the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum. Rembrandt’s ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deijman’ and militia group portraits by the likes of Govert Flinck and Nicolaes Pickenoy are but a few examples of the masterpieces.
Together they illustrate the story of the collective citizenship that is so typical of the Netherlands. They serve as a reflection for us, because the relationship they had back then forms the basis for our modern-day standards and social interaction. Would you like to know why the Dutch attach so much importance to freedom and equality? The answer is hanging - in life-size form - on the walls of the Hermitage Amsterdam.
IN THE PICTURE, OUT OF THE PICTURE, ADDED TO THE PICTURE?
The large-scale group portraits are impressive examples of painting technique. They have been carefully composed to convey what the sitters wanted to show to the world. And what they didn’t want to show has been excluded. Moreover, there no trace in these striking images of people without money or power. Who were these individuals? And what was their relationship to the men and women in the group portraits?
DUTCH MASTERS RE-VISITED
This temporary intervention, shows 13 portraits of prominent Dutch people of colour taking on the role of historical Dutch citizens of colour who, based on historical research, are known to have lived in the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th century.
UPSTAIRS
The exhibition continues on the upper floor with a closer look at the urban society of the Dutch Republic and the background of the group portraits. How did these paintings come about? Through beautiful 17th-century works, visitors gain an insight into the society of the times and the people who made these group portraits possible. In addition, the exhibition looks at what remains untold about their heritage: the darker side of these images and the fate of the people who were left out of the picture.
Rembrandt’s ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deijman’ and portraits of Civic Guards including Govert Flinck and Nicolaes Pickenoy are but a few examples of the works of art that will be available to view in the Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age.

Amsterdam City, Red Light District and SexMuseum
1) #Red #light #district
De Wallen, also known as Walletjes or Rosse Buurt, is a designated area for legalised prostitution and is #Amsterdam's largest and most well known red-light district. This neighbourhood has become a famous attraction for tourists. It consists of a network of roads and alleys containing several hundred small, one-room apartments rented by sex workers who offer their services from behind a window or glass door, typically illuminated with red lights.
2) The #High #Times #Cannabis #Cup is the world’s foremost cannabis festival. Founded in 1988 by Steven Hager, the High Times Cannabis Cup is held each November in Amsterdam. The event allows judges from around the world to sample and vote for their favorite marijuana varieties. These judges-at-large decide the Cannabis Cup (overall winner in the cannabis variety competition), best new product, best booth, best glass, best hash and best Nederhash. A team of VIP judges decides which seed company has grown the best indica, sativa and hybrid strain and which company has produced the best Neder Hash and best imported hash. The High Times Cannabis Cup also includes live music, educational seminars and an expo for marijuana-related products from cannabis-oriented businesses.
3) Amsterdam has more than 100 kilometres (60 miles) of #canals, most of which are navigable by boat. The three main canals are Prinsengracht, Herengracht, and Keizersgracht. In the Middle Ages, Amsterdam was surrounded by a moat, called the Singel, which now forms the innermost ring in the city, and makes the city centre a horseshoe shape. The city is also served by a seaport. It has been compared with Venice, due to its division into about 90 islands, which are linked by more than 1,200 bridges.
4)The #Sexmuseum or the Venus temple (Dutch: Venustempel) is a sex museum located in Amsterdam, #Netherlands. The #museum opened in 1985. It had 675,000 visitors in 2015, making it one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam it’s a compact, instantly likeable city, that’s appealing to look at and pleasant to walk around.
During your vacation in Holland, as you arrive in the Dutch city with an MSC Cruise of Northern Europe, you will immediately feel at home and fascinated by this mixture of provincial and cosmopolitan elements, shaped by the liberal counter-culture that took hold in the 1960s.
Don’t stay on board, Amsterdam deserves a proper visit with an excursion, as it has world famous tourist sites such as: the Anne Frank Huis, where Anne and her family lived in hiding during the II World War, the Van Gogh Museum, with its vast collection of paintings by Van Gogh, hosted in a purposely built modern gallery, and the Rijksmuseum, with its extraordinary collection of paintings by Rembrandt.

Sexmuseum Amsterdam (Музей секса в Амстердаме)
The museum about a sensitive area of human sexuality is located in the busiest spot of Amsterdam, at the Damrak street, just in front of the Central Station, in the real middle of the traffic madness.
Once you get inside, you realize that the Sex Museum tries to combine their rich collection of artifacts with the elements of the attraction park. Its full name is Sex Museum – “The temple of Venus”. In reality, you will see the plaster figure of Venus at the entry and the full size wax figures of Mata Hari with her male partners and Marilyn Monroe, obviously with the air constantly pumped under the actress skirt. Two huge plastic phalluses standing erect will give you an unusual photo opportunity because you are allowed to photograph throughout the whole exhibition
