Visit to Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay (includes tramlapse tour)
A visit to the largest island in San Francisco Bay: Angel Island. On an unusually warm December day. With the exception of a small portion that is a U.S. Coast Guard Station, the entire island is a California State Park. We arrive and leave by ferry, and take a tramlapse tour around the island, stopping at about 13 different points of interest, including some very good views and a bit of history, too (my first ever tramlapse video). We'll even briefly teleport over to the Golden Gate Bridge.
There are several editing mistakes that snuck through in a few places, oh well... Maybe we'll have a contest to see who can find them all.

Angel Island is about 30 minutes off the coast of San Francisco and it has dozens of miles of hiking trails and lots of history. Amie and I took a trip over to explore it and really enjoyed all of the amazing things there is to see on the island. Be sure to plan more time to explore then we did though!

Angel Island Wild and Beautiful
Often overshadowed by its smaller neighbor, Alcatraz, Angel Island is no less historically interesting but also wonderfully wild and beautiful. It's SF locals' best kept secret for picnicking, swimming, hiking, biking, and glorious backcountry camping. But there's also the ugly -- Angel Island served as the immigration detention center of the west and is the site of some horrific US history.

FIRST TIME BACKPACKING: Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay - Day 1 of 3
In the middle of 2018, I decided to try backpacking for the first time. Located in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, I had lived close to Angel Island for most of my life, though I had never been there. This island is a California Historical Landmark and had been used as a military fort with missiles, a US Public Health Service Quarantine Station, and a US Bureau of Immigration inspection and detention facility. It is utilized today as a State Park and is only accessible via ferry or kayak.
Little did I know that this trip would change the course of my life.
I gathered whatever I had from motorcycle touring that crossed over. Then I purchased a tent, backpack and various other things on clearance. I brought so much stuff on this first trip (3 flashlights, 2 pots, 9 lbs of electronics, too much food, etc.) that I carried my tent and a few other things in a separate duffel bag.
My base weight was around 40 lbs for a 2 night trip:
Campsite #4 is typically booked at least 6 months out, so plan ahead. There is a privy in the vicinity and potable water at each site, along with a charcoal grill, bear box and picnic table. Fires are prohibited. There are 10 campsites scattered around the island in groups of 3, a group kayak camping site and various day-use picnic areas available for reservation. Site #4 was at the top of a hill, and the 2 closest campsites were far enough not to see or hear them. The site is exposed and susceptible to weather, so plan accordingly. Cellphone service is available on most of the island.
There's also a restaurant/bar near the dock, tram rides, tours, golf cart rentals, etc.
You can either take a ferry from Tiburon or San Francisco (longer trip). I opted for the latter as I could walk and take public transportation the entire way and not worry about parking my car somewhere. Plus you get to walk through San Francisco and ride past Alcatraz.

Places to see in ( San Francisco - USA ) Angel Island
Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay offering expansive 360° views of the San Francisco skyline, the Marin County Headlands and Mount Tamalpais. The entire island is included within Angel Island State Park and is administered by California State Parks. The island, a California Historical Landmark, has been used for a variety of purposes, including military forts, a US Public Health Service Quarantine Station, and a US Bureau of Immigration inspection and detention facility. The Angel Island Immigration Station on the northeast corner of the island, where officials detained, inspected, and examined approximately one million immigrants, has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
Angel Island is the second largest island in area of the San Francisco Bay (Alameda is the largest). On a clear day, Sonoma and Napa can be seen from the north side of the island; San Jose can be seen from the south side of the island. The highest point on the island, almost exactly at its center, is Mount Caroline Livermore, more commonly known as simply Mt Livermore, at a height of 788 feet (240 m). The island is almost entirely in the city of Tiburon, in Marin County, although, there is a small sliver (0.7%) at the eastern end of it (Fort McDowell) which extends into the territory of the City and County of San Francisco. The island is separated from the mainland of Marin County by Raccoon Strait, the depth of the water approximately 90 feet. The United States Census Bureau reported a land area of 3.107 km² (1.2 sq mi) and a population of 57 people as of the 2000 census.
Until about ten thousand years ago, Angel Island was connected to the mainland; it was cut off by the rise in sea levels due to the end of the last ice age. From about two thousand years ago the island was a fishing and hunting site for Coast Miwok Native Americans. Similar evidence of Native American settlement is found on the nearby mainland of the Tiburon Peninsula upon Ring Mountain. In 1775, the Spanish naval vessel San Carlos made the first European entry to the San Francisco Bay under the command of Juan de Ayala. Ayala anchored off Angel Island, and gave it its modern name (Isla de los Ángeles); the bay where he anchored is now known as Ayala Cove.
In the later 19th century, the army designated the entire island as Fort McDowell and developed further facilities there, including what is now called the East Garrison or Fort McDowell. A quarantine station was opened in Ayala Cove (which at the time was known as Hospital Cove) in 1891. During the Spanish–American War the island served as a discharge depot for returning troops.
The Bubonic plague posed such a threat to the U.S. that Angel island opened as a quarantine station in 1891 to screen Asian passengers and their baggage prior to landing on U.S. soil. In 1955, the State Park Commission authorized California State Parks to purchase 38 acres (15 ha) around Ayala Cove, marking the birth of Angel Island State Park. Additional acreage was purchased four years later, in 1959. The last federal Department of Defense personnel withdrew in 1962, turning over the entire island as a state park in December of the same year. There is one active United States Coast Guard lighthouse on the island at Point Blunt. The lighthouse at Point Stuart has been disestablished.
