Dorothy Caldwell is a recipient of Canada's award for excellence in craft and has been nominated for a Governor General's Award. She represented Canada at the World's Fair in Osaka in 1991 and her work belongs to a raft of prestigious permanent collections, The Canadian Museum of Civilization, The Museum of Art and Design, New York and The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In March 2014, her latest touring exhibition, Charting Unfamiliar Territory, comes to the Art Gallery of Peterborough, as part of the gallery's 40th anniversary celebrations.
She is only one of dozens of artists that were asked the same question. WHAT IS ART? Coming soon from MAP.

Meet the Makers at Zimart, Rice Lake Gallery: Each year a Zimbabwean sculptor is invited to Canada to be the artist-in-residence for the season. During their stay in Canada the artists lead sculpting workshops at the gallery.
Brad Copping, Setting afloat on a river in spate
Artist Talk: June 25, 2016
Artist and glass blower Brad Copping spent over a year in residence at the Canadian Canoe Museum covering a 16′ cedar strip canoe in a mirrored mosaic map. The map charts the waterways from Copping’s studio in Apsley, Ontario southward into the Trent Severn Waterway and on into Rice Lake.
“It is the experience of paddling on still and quiet nights, the sky clear and the moon yet to rise that moved me to create this work. The mirror-like surface of the water reflects the stars and I am given the sensation of moving myself through them. As the moon rises, the small ripples from my paddle and canoe cutting through the water sends the reflected light dancing across its surface.” – Brad Copping
This past fall, Copping paddled the canoe the 135 kilometers between GlazenHuis in Lommel, Belgium to the Dutch National Glass Museum in Leerdam, Netherlands. He journaled the journey between these two glass centres and inscribed his experiences on the mirrored interior with a diamond engraver. This canoe will be exhibited along with other pieces from this recent body of work in the Main Gallery.
The mirrored canoe project has been generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, the GlazenHuis, the Dutch National Glass Museum, and the Canadian Canoe Museum.

Gallery in the Attic
Peterborough’s Gallery in the Attic is a member-supported space for the sale of local artists' work. They host several themed exhibitions throughout the year as well as member shows. The space is multi-functional and interdisciplinary. They can host workshops, musical events, exhibitions and photography classes.
The Gallery in the Attic is also home to the longest continuously operating darkroom in Canada! It is a legacy they are trying to preserve through the Peterborough Darkroom Project. Every couple months, they offer a “newbie night” for those wanting to learn how to process film - keep your eye on our social media to find out details about the next event! For a yearly $50 fee, you can join the Darkroom Project, which allows you to use the space on your own. If you’re just curious about the space, you can always visit during gallery hours to take a tour.
Last but certainly not least, Gallery in the Attic and the Darkroom Project sells FILM!
