A Florida SBDC Success Story - Island Conclave Fine Art Gallery Bokeelia, Fla.
A Florida SBDC Success Story: Marketing Mania’s Island Conclave Fine Art Gallery, Bokeelia, Fla.
Since 1998, Jennifer and Kevin Russell have been long-standing pioneers in voice recording and marketing with their clients throughout the Florida as well as to national and international markets. Under the umbrella of Marketing Mania, they have shifted and changed through technological advances and industry shifts, and are still considered a leader in their industry. As voice recording equipment improved and decreased in size, the need for commercial space and studio rooms reduced. This presented the Russells with an opportunity to renovate their commercial building on Pine Island. In November of 2015, the Russells developed a new vision for the location and soon thereafter in January 2016, repurposed the space into what is now Island Conclave Fine Art. Jennifer says, “We figured we were already representing artists (voice talent), why not extend into tangible arts.”
Early on, the FSBDC at FGCU provided in-depth market and statistical research including compilations of what-if scenarios to help the Russells understand the market they were entering. Transforming from a nationally and internationally known voice-over company to a physical retail marketspace presented challenges for them. To help mitigate the hurdles of the new market, the FSBDC at FGCU provided both demographic and industry-specific research to obtain comparable data, including financial performance for the owners to create a baseline snapshot of potential income and expenses. In addition to research, the FSBDC at FGCU provided reports and instruction on how to utilize visitor demographics and traffic studies for the southwest Florida area to pinpoint target audiences both during and outside of the area’s three to five month visitor season.
The Russells spent four months renovating the commercial property, turning all of the small offices, with the exception of one studio booth, into an open floor-plan retail space. Desks and shelving were converted into retail cabinetry and closets converted to selling alcoves for smaller items. Kevin said, “We had been here for years doing B2B, but we also had a good retail location, so why not merge the two concepts together.”
They currently have four employees and several producers and editors all over the world who support Marketing Mania. The gallery arm of the company features over 30 fine artists, which is far from the early beginning of only six local artists. The gallery is local-centric with some global outreach, thanks in part to their international connections. The Russells consider Island Conclave a destination gallery and a great attraction for tourists. The gallery specifically focuses on providing customers fine art crafted by local artists and includes a selection of unique art ranging from pottery, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, to other mixed-mediums. Jennifer says the best part of being an entrepreneur through the years is being able to create something and watch it grow. She further states, “With every business we have opened, it is always nice to see what comes out of the blood, sweat, and tears.”
The information and business consulting provided to Marketing Mania by the FSBDC at FGCU has since help them expand the Island Conclave into their newest local venture, Things to Do Pine Island, a collaborative marketing effort of 20 plus Pine Island businesses. The collaboration, led by the Russells, features businesses along the Pine Island corridor in multiple local area publications and online sources, to encourage visitors to visit Pine Island and experience local area art, food, nature, and water activities.
Jennifer highly recommends the FSBDC at FGCU. The FSBDC at FGCU team of people can pull needed research information and are happy to provide assistance and advice to you. One aspect the Russells appreciate of the FSBDC at FGCU is their support of local businesses beyond consulting, by providing exposure for clients through success and stories and awards programs. Jennifer said, “The SBDC is providing a service to the public, any new business really should take advantages of the services they offer.”

The Natural Beauty of Caladesi Island
Florida's Caladesi Island State Park was named America's most beautiful beach in 2008, but the island is much more than sun, surf, and red beach umbrellas. It's a gem among nature preserves, an entire barrier island with coastal dune, mangrove, maritime hammock, and pine flatwood habitats, all teeming with wildlife.
This video includes a description of the pre-Columbian Tocobaga, the Native Americans living in the Tampa Bay region before the arrival of Spanish Conquistator Pánfilo de Narváez in 1528; made real through the paintings of Hermann Trappman, the premier artist of Florida historical scenes.
Shown are the diverse and beautiful species of wildlife, fish, birds and flora native to the region, the nature path around the island through its various habitats, kayaking the mangrove-lined channels, and the 20-minute ride from Honeymoon Island on the Caladesi Island Ferry.
See the island through the eyes of Myrtle Scharrer Betz, the only person born and raised on the barrier island in the 20th Century (born in 1895), whose vision with her father, Swiss immigrant Henry Scharrer, led to the protection of Caladesi as a Florida state park in 1967. Her book, Yesteryear I Lived in Paradise, is a brilliant account of a pioneering family in Florida.
See the natural beauty of Caladesi Island: the real Florida.
Many thanks to Terry Fortner and the family of Myrtle Scharrer Betz, University of Tampa Press, Tampa Bay Times, painter Hermann Trappman, photographer Jim Wark, the Dunedin Historical Society, narrator Heidi Eyler, and musician/songwriter Jon Galfano.

A Modern Sculpture in a Jungle
Live Simply and Naturally, yet in Elegance...
Do you love South Florida for so many reasons, yet still yearn to spend more time outdoors? Do you wish your children and their friends could play outside again, like you did as a child? Do you feel a sense of peace and tranquility in nature, and seek a natural landscape in your home ?
A true paradise hidden in the heart of the City of Pinecrest . Situated on a quiet street in North Pinecrest, yet just minutes away from Dadeland Mall, and downtown South Miami. This sanctuary is one-of-a-kind.
Find a slice of heaven in nature, in the privacy and protection of your home. A Florida Hammock with Oak Trees, Pine Trees and Gumbo Limbos. Well maintained trails lead you through a dense palmetto thicket; native birds, butterflies and indigenous flora and fauna surround you; an abundant orchard with native fruit trees, including Sapodillo, Mango, Brown Lychee, Avocado, Guava and Sapote, align the house. Views of natural beauty are captured by every window. A resort-style pool opens up to the pristine natural setting. A white cabana house, surrounded by bromeliads and river rock, provides a small juxtaposition against the natural backdrop.
First Time on Market
This unique residence was constructed in 1983 by a young family with a vision - a custom-built contemporary residence set amidst a natural Florida landscape.
The Residence
The Bauhaus architectural design is a minimalist, German-inspired style . The evidence of this design influence is apparent in the white pipe railings, stainless steel fireplace flue and glass block wall. Upon completion, the architect was awarded the prestigious 1983 FA/AIA Award for Excellence in Architecture by Florida Architect Magazine. The house was also recognized in 1984 by the Concrete Institute of South Florida. Additional profiles have included numerous features in The Miami Herald and South Florida Home and Garden Magazine.
A dramatic front door, which is really just a section of a wall on a pivot, creates an entryway open to 20' floor-to-ceiling windows, which span the entire rear of the house and both overlook and open up to the pool, patio, and garden. The house is remarkably balanced. On the main level, loft like spaces expose the living room, dining room and family room for public use and entertaining while single-story ceilings pervade rooms (kitchen, breakfast area, den, and bedroom) to create comfort and intimacy. Everglades Plume Hunters...and Plumassiers
The Feather Trade and the American Conservation from the National Museum of American History -
(Excerpt) The plumes produced by Florida's egrets when they're rearing their young — were so popular in 1900, they were more valuable per ounce than gold. Plume hunters killed 5 million a year, decimating Florida's shore bird population.

Plume trade: During two walks along the streets of Manhattan in 1886, the American Museum of Natural History's ornithologist, Frank Chapman, spotted 40 native species of birds including sparrows, warblers, and woodpeckers. But the birds were not flitting through the trees -- they had been killed, and for the most part, plucked, disassembled, or stuffed, and painstakingly positioned on three-quarters of the 700 women's hats Chapman saw. The North American feather trade was in its heyday. (Continued)
Hats Off to Birds -
By 1903, the price of feathers had risen to $80 an ounce, and at far more
than the price of gold -- the same year that the first national wildlife
refuge -- was created by presidential decree by Teddy Roosevelt, an avid
sportsman who connsidered plume hunting despicable. Source:

Murderous Millinery by Alan Haynes - (Excerpt) In 1867 John Cordeaux described in the journal Zoologist how feather traders were offering a shilling each for 'white gulls'. These were used in the new fashion for decorating women's hats, and one hunter boasted that he had killed 4,000 gulls in a season. A spokesman for the trade claimed that no business in feathers had begun before 1870, but like so many public statements from this source the assertion was false. Howard
Saunders also watched hunters at work in the 1860s 'often cutting their wings off and flinging the victims into the sea, to struggle with feet and head until death came slowly to their relief'.
The first public figure in Britain to draw attention to the plight of many
British wild birds was Alfred Newton, a founder member of the British
Ornithologists' Union, editor of the journal Ibis, and Professor of
Zoology and Comparative Anatomy at Cambridge. In 1868 he read a paper
called 'The Zoological Aspect of Game Laws' to the Zoology and Botany
Section of the British Association.

Millinery has existed in Britain since 1700. . . . Running parallel to these hat making arts were feather workshops or more correctly workshops called plumassiers where feathers were dyed and made into arrangements.

With Cracker Hunters - Shooting and Fishing in the Florida Everglades
The New York Times - July 13, 1891
(Excerpt)
Before the Everglades were opened to sportsmen and trappers the woods and waters of the State were fairly alive with the most gorgeous land and water birds to be found in North America, but the hunters have so persistently trapped and shot them that the pine woods and cypress swamps are no longer made beautiful by their presence. . . . Hunters formerly killed the birds with shotguns, and with their duck guns that could slaughter hundreds at a time, literally slaying them by the boatload. By using twenty-two-caliber rifles the victims would be selected, and not dozens of worthless birds killed, as it the case when the shotgun is used. The plumes of the red and white egrets and snowy heron and the skins of the flamingo and spoonbill are the most valuable, and those birds were always singled out from the rest of the flock.
