Microbreweries and craft beers in Amsterdam
In Amsterdam, there is beer and beer. Canals and canals. Beer, canals, canals, beer, canals and even windmills.
Brouwerij t Ij.: The oldest. The most famous. The hardest to pronounce and the easiest to find in a bar in Amsterdam. More, more, more. After coming back from a tour in the south of the Netherlands, Kaspar Peterson, member of the band Drukerwk, decided to brew a beer inspired by the surrounding Belgian beers. The brewery produces a classic beer, and rather strong, declined in different types: lager, dark, amber, IPA… To add to its charm, the historic brewery is located under one of the most beautiful and biggest windmill close to the city centre in East Amsterdam. There is a big outdoor terrace to enjoy the nice weather. The brewery organises tours.
In the same area, 5 mn by bike, Homeland is one of the most unusual place in Amsterdam. It is a hotel, a bar, a cafe and a microbrewery rolled into one, in an old building of the shipyard. Its 60s decor is unique. Panelled walls, massive plants, colours, patterns and period artefacts. It is spacious, bright and full of excitement. The terrace overlooks the water on one side, and the park on the other. People come here to enjoy a relaxing swim. Homeland hosts a beer festival in September. On the menu: music, beer of course, and street food.
Let’s cross the Ij, this inlet, this lake, this river towards the North. Oedipus is the funkiest and the most colourful microbrewery in Amsterdam. It started with a group of friends. A festival, beers brewed especially for this occasion, soon selling faster than bread. The goal of Oedipus is to brew unique and pleasing beers for everyone to enjoy. There are flavours of grapefruit, passion fruit. Beers with lemongrass, chilli, lime and coriander. Strong and lighter beers. Sweeter, smoother and tangier beers. Inside the brewery, colours, plants, good mood, industrial design because it is an industrial place. Basically a good reason to go to North Amsterdam. The tasting room is open from Thursdays to Sundays. On the other days, you will find their beers in many bars in Amsterdam.
Troost is a microbrewery, a gin distillery and a lemonade producer. Several locations in Amsterdam: In Pjip in the South, in the old industrial zone next to Westerpark in the West, and some also in the East. A beautiful location, good beers. My favourite are New England IPA and Ozzie Pale Ale. Refreshing and perfect on a beautiful sunny day. You can eat here and tours are organised to learn about the brewing process.
Butchers Tears is the microbrewery the furthest away from the centre of Amsterdam. It is easier to get there by bike, even if there are some buses too. At the end of a small street in an industrial zone, you will find a tap room made out of white tiles. Some sketches on the walls and beer taps. Outside, some room on a car park, wooden chairs and benches. It’s rather minimalistic and it may not sound very appealing. But the beers are very good, maybe even the best in Amsterdam. The music playlist is spot on and the service very friendly. If you like a good beer off the beaten path. 20 minutes from Dam Market Square by bike.
Cafe de Prael is in the Red light district, so it is the most central microbrewery in Amsterdam. Some tables outside and on 2 levels. It is rather dark, perfect for a date or to meet with friends for a local brew. Less perfect if you want to film inside. Good beers with Belgian, German and British influence. it is a community led entreprise and also the place of the first breweries in Amsterdam around 1400.

So join us as we jump on our bike and experience Amsterdam like a local and hop by awesome bars, restaurants and shopping spots. We start the day with a leisurely free ferry ride to Amsterdam Noord where we have a typical Dutch breakfast at cafe Noorderlicht. With a full stomach, we travel to the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam’s west to experience the city’s best chocolates at Tony's Chocolonely, shop for some funky souvenirs and have lunch at Mossels and Gin. Next up we start the day drinks at distillery Wynand Fockink. The distillery and tasting tavern is located in a little alleyway off the famous Dam and serves over 70 Dutch liqueurs and jenevers which are all made by hand on-site. We sample typical Dutch flavours like Half and Half and crowd favourite Salted Dutch Liquorice. Slightly tipsy we take the train to Amsterdam’s south to visit The World of Food. The former parking garage has been converted into a food hall and serves cuisines from all over the world like Surinamese and Ghanaian. The Heineken Experience Amsterdam Netherlands VIP Tour Rock the City Tour Gerard Adriaan Heineken

Heineken Lager Beer is a world-renowned beer with its familiar green bottle and red star on the label. Until 2013 the Dutch version was bottled in brown bottles. Since 1975 most Heineken brand beer was produced at the brewery in in Zoeterwoude, Netherlands accounting for in excess of 2.74 billion liters of Heineken Lager Beer annually. All breweries wholly owned by the Heineken Group produce in excess of 16 billion liters annually in more than 170 countries around the world. This behemoth beer brand traces its humble beginnings to a local brewery, De Hooberg, founded in 1592 in Amsterdam.
Gerard Adriaan Heineken is the founder of the Heineken brand. Looking for his way in the world and having an interest in the process of making beer, Gerard talked his wealthy mother into buying the over 300-year-old De Hooberg (Translated as Haystack) brewery. Keen on finding a brew that was unique in flavor which would differentiate itself from the local beers of the day, Mr. Heineken hired a student of scientist Louis Pasteur, Dr. Elion, to develop a yeast for Bavarian bottom fermentation, a process he was convinced would deliver a unique beer. In 1873 using the yeast developed by Dr. Elion the first bottle of Heineken was brewed.
Heineken began regularly shipping beer to France after it won the Medaille D'Or at the International Maritime Exposition in Paris in 1875. Almost instantly upon its prestigious win, Heineken became the largest exporter of beer to France. It exported a phenomenal 1.7 million gallons annually from its home in Amsterdam.
In his lifetime the Heineken beer founded by Gerard won 2 other honors, Diplome d'Honneurs at the 1883 Colonial Exposition in Amsterdam as well as the Grand Prix at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. After his death Heineken also won the Hors Concours Membre du Jury in Paris in 1900. Two of the four awards, the Medaille d'Or and Diplome d'Honneurs are still mentioned on the Heineken labels of todays famous green bottle with the red star on the label. This 154-year-old brewer was twice the recipient of the Creative Marketer of the Year Award.
The Heineken Experience Museum now occupies the original brewery where Mr. Gerard Adriaan Heineken began brewing this now world-famous beer. The Heineken Experience incorporates a visitor center with the historic brewery that Gerard built in 1867. The building was used as the primary brewing facility for Heineken until 1988. A modern, larger brewery was opened on the outskirts of Amsterdam where the massive volume of Heineken beer could be logistically produced.
In 1991, Heineken opened the Heineken Experience, an all-encompassing visitor experience that includes the Heineken Treat and Information Centre, a museum, and tour of the history of Amsterdam’s iconic beer. The Heineken Experience is one of Amsterdam’s most popular tourist attractions.
Today the Heineken Experience includes four levels of historic artifacts coupled with the latest high-tech multi- media technologies along with product exploration and sampling. The significance of the original brewing facility cannot be overstated in the history of Heineken, it also is of major significance to the industrial heritage of Europe. The original Heineken brewery is the anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage, a route that encompasses 845 sites in 29 European countries.
The Heineken Experience is open 365 Days a year with varying tour and last admission times, check the web site for details and prices. The Heineken Experience offers three Tour options:
• Heineken Tour: a 1.5-hour Self-Guided Tour capped off with 2 perfectly chilled beers at the Heineken Best ‘Dam Bar and a free city map of Amsterdam
• The VIP Tour: a unique behind the scenes tour guided by a Heineken® Connoisseur- exclusive access to the hidden bar – 5 Premium Beers paired with Dutch cheeses – a personalized Heineken bottle – a free city map of Amsterdam – VIP tour guests MUST be 18- tour is in English
• The Rock the City Tour – Begins at the Heineken Experience- a canal cruise with a Heineken® Experience Guide- 2 perfectly chilled beers- a free city map of Amsterdam
The Heineken Experience combines the history of the brand, its importance to Amsterdam, as well as its historical significance to Europe and the world of beer. Choose anyone of the three tours depending on your time constraints. Be sure to make time on your literary to experience at least 1 of the tours, it is a treasure of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is breathtaking from the canals that's why my cousin and I rented a canal boat so we could have our own private tour. We rented the canal boat from canalmotorboats.com conveniently located west of Amsterdam Central Station and rents for 40 euros per hour but make sure to reserve a few days ahead.
Amsterdam has 2 major nightlife districts called Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein these squares are loaded with bars and night clubs. Depending on where you start, I recommend you get a delicious negroni from NJOY cocktail bar but beware, they have a strict door policy so do not show up too trashed or under dressed.
At Rembrantplein you'll find many great spots like Escape night club, Jantjesverjaardag (a popular student bar), techno club Air Amsterdam, and my favorite Club NYX for their bizarre toilet bar on the top floor where you literally can take a piss behind the DJ in a urinal on the dance floor.
If you're not into night clubs than Amsterdam has a magnitude of bars and cafes, it is what Amsterdam is best known for. Dig deep into local Dutch cafe culture in the Jordaan district at cozy places Cafe Thijsen, Gevulde Gaper, Staalmeesters and De Zotte.
For party bars and dive bars check out No. 129, Cafe Kooper, Kopstootbar and end your night either at the Water Hole for rock music and live bands or club hard at the massive Paradiso dance floor or consider Chicago Social club for a more laid back hipster kind of vibe.
In conclusion, the Amsterdam nightlife is one of world's best. The fact that bars and clubs are open late, no last call, great selection of music & venues plus a chill laid back local crowd that makes Amsterdam the absolute party capital of Europe, without a doubt. Ibiza eat your heart out! Also, make sure to watch my Amsterdam travel guide for day time activities.

Brouwerij 't IJ (Amsterdam) • Tasty Tales
Brouwerij 't IJ and the iconic windmill are in the Top 5 Amsterdam breweries of many a beerlover. Amsterdam might have some major and well known beer producers, but craft brewery Brouwerij ’t IJ, founded in the mid-80s, was one of the first to brew well-crafted Dutch beers in Belgian style. Founder Kasper Peterson, a Dutch musician who wrote a few chart-topping songs, started the brewery in 1985 in a former municipal bath house. The tasting room and a few of the brew rooms are still located here, right next to the windmill.

Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater (Amsterdam) • Tasty Tales
Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater is not just a local Amsterdam brewery but also one of the top craft beer bars in Amsterdam. Dutch beer has a long history and this brewery treasures the past. Brouwerij De Gekroonde Valk (The Crowned Falcon) was founded in 1733, the brewery was later renamed Van Vollenhoven. Around 1900 it had become the largest brewery in the Netherlands with export to all continents of the world! In later years it closed down but with the opening of Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater, Van Vollenhoven is given it’s rightful place again.

Vedett Extra Ordinary IPA Beer Review in Amsterdam, Netherlands - Shot in 4K UHD
Welcome to another international Taste Tour edition - these are more to the point beer review episodes, shot in 4K at the Museumplein in Amsterdam, Netherlands! This time around we're trying out the Vedett Extra Ordinary IPA, whose website description states:
VEDETT EXTRA ORDINARY IPA
The inventors of Indian Pale Ale may have originally added extra hops to help it survive the long voyage to India. But we just do it for the taste!
Every drop as thirst-quenching as the last, Vedett IPA offers an explosion of flavoursome bitterness that increases with intensity towards the finish, tempered by an unparalleled velvety smoothness resulting in a very accessible taste.
Fresh, fruity and floral notes give way to touches of caramel sweetness, while its superb, lingering aftertaste continues to tantalise the tastebuds long after. Here’s to a great-tasting, refreshing beer!
