The Sumida Hokusai Museum | JAPAN Forward
Katsushika Hokusai, a world-renowned ukiyo-e artist, was born in Honjo-Wari-Gesui (presently the Kamezawa area in Sumida Ward, Tokyo) in 1760 and spent almost the entire 90 years of his life in Sumida Ward where he created a large number of masterpieces.
In honor of this outstanding artist whom many local citizens are truly proud of, the Sumida Ward opened the Sumida Hokusai Museum on November 22, 2016 as a base to invigorate the local community and contribute to the region’s industry and tourism.
The collection features an exhibit of his life and the relationship between Hokusai and Sumida through high-definition real-size replicas of representative works and related episodes. In addition, special exhibitions of the results of research and studies on Hokusai and Sumida will be held in the gallery. Moreover, the museum will conduct a broad range of activities aimed at disseminating a wealth of information by holding seminars, lectures, and workshops.
Through these activities, the museum hopes to relay information about Hokusai and Sumida both at home and abroad, with the aim of enhancing the appeal of both.

Museum dedicated to woodcut artist Hokusai opens in Tokyo
TOKYO (AP) — A museum dedicated to Japanese woodblock print artist Katsushika Hokusai, creator of some of the most iconic art of the genre, opened Tuesday in the neighborhood he lived in some two centuries ago. The Sumida Hokusai Museum , in Tokyo's Sumida ward, features Hokusai in its permanent and feature exhibitions, with works from the collections of Peter Morse, Muneshige Narasaki and Sumida ward itself. The museum's home is a modern five-floor building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima, that suggests blocks leaning against each other, with surfaces that softly reflect the surrounding neighborhood.

The museum displays a collection of works by Katsushika Hokusai, one of Japan's most famous painters from the Edo Period. The museum ranges from ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock prints) to illustrated books by the artist and some of his pupils. Hokusai himself did not have a special relation to Tsuwano. Rather, the museum was opened here owing to the discovery of one of his works by a local researcher.

Hokusai, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji
Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景, Fugaku Sanjūrokkei) is an ukiyo-e (浮世絵, pictures of the floating world) series of large, colour woodblock prints created between 1826 and 1833 by the Japanese master of the brush and skilled draftsman, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). This series marked the beginning of Hokusai's courtship of the great mountain regarded as the source of the secret of immortality, and his effort to capture Fuji from a variety of different places and distances, in different seasons, weather conditions and telling context. The first 36 were included in the original publication and, due to their popularity, ten more were added after the original publication.
Hokusai drew each of the images on paper, or, more precisely, onto washi, the Japanese paper, and then he glued them onto a plank of wood, usually cherry wood, using the outlines given by the drawings for cutting the wood block. Hokusai followed the Nishiki-e (錦絵, brocade pictures) method of using multiple blocks for separate portions of the image, allowing him to use a wide range of colours, and to achieve incredibly complex and detailed images.
All images are faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art that are in the public domain.

Music: Etenraku, performed by The Kyoto Imperial Court Music Orchestra of Japan, is a Gagaku (雅楽, elegant, correct, or refined music) style, Hyojo mode, piece. Gagaku is the traditional court music of Japan. It consists of three primary bodies: Saibara, Komagaku, and Togaku. When the music is played alone it is called Kangen, and when accompanied with a dance it is called Bugaku. It has been played since the sixth century, and is Japan's oldest orchestral art music. It is the music played whenever an important member of the royal class makes an entrance, and is rarely performed in public. But, I think that all classes must be abolished, so here it is dedicated to Mount Fuji, Katsushika Hokusai and his works, and YOU ALL!
All I have produced before the age of seventy is not worth taking into account. At seventy-three I have learned a little about the real structure of nature, of animals, plants, trees, birds, fishes and insects. In consequence when I am eighty, I shall have made still more progress. At ninety I shall penetrate the mystery of things; at one hundred I shall certainly have reached a marvelous stage; and when I am a hundred and ten, everything I do, be it a dot or a line, will be alive. I beg those who live as long as I to see if I do not keep my word. Written at the age of seventy five by me, once Hokusai, today Gwakyo Rojin, the old man mad about drawing.

The Sumida Hokusai Museum is the one of the newest clutural places in Tokyo. This museum is for worldwide Ukiyo-e artist, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) who spent most of his life in Sumida area.
The Follwings are the excerpts from its official explanation:
He left many works that he had created, most depicting the landscapes of Sumida, such as the Ryogoku Bridge, Mimeguri Shrine, and Ushijima Shrine.
Hokusai's work had already been recognized outside of Japan during his lifetime. For instance, Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), a visiting doctor at a Dutch trading post in Japan, adopted works of Hokusai Manga (Hokusai Sketchbooks) into his book Nippon, which was published between 1832 and 1851. However, it was only after the onset of Japonism popularity upon the International Exposition of 1867 held in Paris that his name became highly acknowledged. Ukiyo-e was introduced along with a number of artifacts during the world's fair. The dynamic composition and bright coloring were revolutionary to the European art world causing a major impact towards European artists, and triggering the birth of impressionism.

The series was produced from c. 1830 to 1832, when Hokusai was in his seventies and at the height of his career, and published by Nishimura Yohachi. Among the 36 prints, the first three are the most famous: The Great Wave off Kanagawa [1], Red Fuji-Southern Wind-Clear Morning [2], and Rainstorm Beneath the Summit [3]. Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾 北斎, October 31, 1760 -- May 10, 1849) was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. He was influenced by such painters as Sesshu, and other styles of Chinese painting. Born in Edo (now Tokyo), Hokusai is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景 Fugaku Sanjuroku-kei?, c. 1831) which includes the internationally recognized print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created during the 1820s.
Hokusai created the Thirty-Six Views both as a response to a domestic travel boom and as part of a personal obsession with Mount Fuji. It was this series, specifically The Great Wave print and Fuji in Clear Weather, that secured Hokusai's fame both in Japan and overseas. As historian Richard Lane concludes, Indeed, if there is one work that made Hokusai's name, both in Japan and abroad, it must be this monumental print-series.... While Hokusai's work prior to this series is certainly important, it was not until this series that he gained broad recognition.
In the West, the artist may be known for his woodblock print of The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji is an ukiyo-e series of large, color woodblock prints by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760--1849). The series depicts Mount Fuji in differing seasons and weather conditions from a variety of different places and distances. It actually consists of 46 prints created between 1826 and 1833. The first 36 were included in the original publication and, due to their popularity, ten more were added after the original publication.

Grand Palais exhibition of works by Japanese artist Hokusai
A major retrospective of the work of Japanese artist Hokusai is due to open on Wednesday at the Paris Grand Palais.
The exhibition, which runs through to January 18 2015, features up to five hundred Hokusai works - three hundred initially - but two hundred of those will be replaced during the exhibit with similar prints in order to preserve the quality of these fragile 18th and 19th century works.
The artist's most iconic works, The Big Wave and the series called Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji will highlight the show.
Seiji Nagata, the Curator/Director of the Katsushika Hokusai Museum of Art, said the meaning of the exhibition was to explore the artist's works in the very place that his work was discovered.
It was exactly 200 years ago when Hokusai Manga arrived with some ceramics from Japan, and his works have been internationally acknowledged since, he said.
Hokusai died in 1849 at the age of 89.
He made his name with his wood block prints and this show features six decades of his work covering his different style through the various periods of his long life and artistic career.
Laurent Salome, the Grand Palais' Artisit Director, said this is probably the largest collection of Hokusai works ever assembled.
He said Hokusai's faces, shapes and sillhouettes have influenced contemporary manga and cartoons.
It is something that really speaks to us very easily when you see these little characters you don't think that you are seeing a 19th century artist, he added.
