The Famous Off-Road Trail Black Bear Pass - Telluride, Colorado
For the full trail guide please visit:
Black Bear Pass Off-Road Trail in Colorado was originally constructed in the late 1800's to service the Black Bear Mine and subsequently re-opened for recreational travel in 1959. Few trails in the United States have attained the legendary status that Black Bear Pass has. The ascent from US 550 begins near the summit of Red Mountain Pass, historically known as the Million Dollar Highway. The initial climb is easy and scenic, with beautiful wildflowers carpeting the high mountain meadows. Waterfalls cascade from alpine snow melt as you climb to the 12,840 foot summit. The descent into Telluride is vastly different, with narrow shelf roads and steep drop-offs. The descent into Telluride is highlighted by the stunning 365 foot Bridal Veil Falls topped by the Smuggler-Union Hydroelectric Power Plant, better known as the Bridal Veil Powerhouse. The trail descends adjacent to Bridal Veil Falls, with some of the tightest switchbacks a vehicle can travel through. Black Bear Pass' infamy has even been penned into a bluegrass song, written and performed by C.W. McCall:
Mary Elizabeth drawed a picture of the road; it looked like a whole bunch a' Zs and Ws all strung together. And RJ took one look at it and said that the only way that Jeep car is goin' down that road is over her dead body. Then a rock slipped out from under the wheel and the U-Drive-'Em Army Jeep car went right over the edge of the cliff. Yahoo-oo-oo-oo!

Autumn in Telluride, Colorado
More or less a Zen look at Autumn in Telluride, Colorado.
Telluride is located at an elevation of 8,750 feet in an isolated spot in Southwest Colorado. From the west, Colorado Route 145 is the most common way into Telluride; however, there are two alternate passes to enter the town: Imogene Pass and Black Bear Pass.
On the eastern side of town, there are two waterfalls, Ingram Falls, which is visible from town, and Bridal Veil Falls and the Bridal Veil Hydroelectric plant, which are just out of sight from town to the right of Ingram. The power plant house was leased for a period of time by Eric Jacobsen, who restored the house and the generator inside. The hydroelectric plant was built in 1895 to power the Smuggler-Union Mine. It is the second-oldest alternating current power plant in the world, the first being the Ames Hydroelectric Generating Plant near Ophir, Colorado, also in San Miguel County.

The town is served by air transportation via Telluride Regional Airport (TEX), the highest altitude commercial airport in the United States. The airport is considered challenging by pilots because of frequent adverse weather conditions, high altitude, and the extremely rugged mountain terrain which surrounds the airport on nearly all sides. Major airline service is provided seasonally into Montrose, approximately 70 miles north by road.
Beyond the ski lifts, Telluride is now widely recognized as an all-season resort. Telluride Ski Resort is definitely the main attraction in the winter. But when summer comes around, Telluride transforms into an outdoor recreation hot spot, with tourists visiting to enjoy mountain biking, hiking, river rafting, sightseeing and more. The Telluride Tourism Board promotes tourism in the region.
Telluride is also home to many endurance events. The Hardrock 100, held in July, has a major aid station in the town park. The Fall Tilt, a 12-hour downhill mountain biking event, is held in Mountain Village each September. And the 40-mile Telluride Mountain Run loops the town in a wide swathe that includes some of the most difficult and scenic trails in the area.
Telluride, along with Ridgway, are the two cities closest to the New Mexico, Utah and Nevada that allow the recreational sales of marijuana.

Jeep Off Roading Mountainside Trail | Black Bear Pass
These drivers brought along their Jeeps to conquer one of the most difficult and dangerous off road trails in Colorado. The driver kept his cool navigating the narrow path on the edge of the mountainside, but the passenger was freaking out the entire time. I don't blame her...that looks scary AF.

San Juan mountains 2012 - we run Black Bear Pass backwards
Note: I tried a new dash cam position for this trail and it did not work out very well, so sorry about the poor video quality in some places.
Our club, the Western Slope 4-wheelers, runs the infamous and dangerous Black Bear pass backwards about once a year. The rest of the year, Black Bear is one-way down to Telluride due to the steep shelf road being extremely narrow. Passing would be extremely dangerous and impossible in many places along the steep switchbacks.

Bridal Veil Falls // Telluride Colorado Dayhike
Our recent trip to Southwest Colorado started in one of the most beautiful mountains towns, Telluride. The Bridal Veil Falls Trail is located at the end of the box canyon surrounding Telluride. The trail follows a 4x4 road that switchbacks up to the falls. This road ends for vehicles just before the falls by a gate and only hikers/bikers are allowed further. Bridal Veil is the tallest freefalling water fall in Colorado and drops 365 feet. We clocked this hike at 6.1 miles and took us about 3 hours (with a very slow pace taking many pictures).
This is a great doable hike for most skill levels and comes with a great sense of accomplishment at the top of the falls. Get there early to avoid sun and crowds, especially if you're driving up since it gets more sketchy to park when more vehicles are on the trail.
