STORYLINE:
German Doctor Gunther von Hagens started his travelling show of human bodies preserved in plastic this week in Los Angeles.
California's Science Centre is hosting von Hagens' Body Worlds exhibit of more than 200 authentic human specimens.
It's the first US stop for the exhibit which has toured nations in Europe and Asia.
Body World's literally lays bare the human form in displays of entire human bodies and individual organs.
Using a process to preserve tissue, bone, nerves and blood vessels, bodies and their parts are portrayed in total, in cross section, and in slices.
Von Hagens calls the preservation process plastination, which replaces natural fluids in the body with plastics that harden the tissue and other body parts.
The process was developed by von Hagens in 1977 as a way to preserve human specimens for medical education.
Doctor von Hagens says he drew inspiration for the project in part from Renaissance-era interpretations of the human form in anatomy studies from Leonardo Da Vinci and others of the era.
In some instances, full human bodies are displayed in a whimsical fashion -- the human form on a bike, on a horse, or posing with a hat.
Von Hagens hopes this will put the general viewing public at ease in dealing with the taboo associated with such an open display of human corpses.
Dealing with that taboo has triggered controversial reactions at some of the exhibit stops in other nations.
Museum officials in Los Angeles convened a panel of bioethicists to review the exhibit, taking into account the possible controversy linked to the show.
Officials said they also wanted to ensure that donation of all bodies in the exhibit could be verified and met high standards for informed consent.

Atlanta Celebrates InterPlay 2015
On October 24th, 2015, InterPlay Atlanta joined others cities in the United States and in the world to celebrate the first International Day of InterPlay. In addition to being a FUNdraising event, festivities included each city honoring an InterPlay Spirit Award to a person in their communities who had contributed significantly to the creativity and play in their area.
Here in Atlanta, we honored Lesly Fredman for the multiple creative roles she plays in our Atlanta metro area and for cross-pollinating people from such groups as Dancing Flowers for Peace, Improv, and Artist Conference Network into InterPlay.
During our celebration that took place from 1:00 to 3:30 PM, we had InterPlay stations for our guests. They were given an opportunity to affirm and be affirmed by Spirit Awardee Lesly Fredman, which engaged them in throwing rose petals and blowing bubbles. Local Atlanta InterPlayers, Gerry Cook and Joyce Kinnard, operated an exformation station, which invited people to move excess information out of their bodies. Sharon Levering performed dances on behalf of guests while her husband Wade drummed.
After guests arrived, we held a mini InterPlay session and a Soulprint Players performance. During the performance, the Soulprint Players told 3-sentence stories to honor Lesly Fredman and then invited her to tell a big body story.
As festivities continued, we got online and connected with Phil Porter and Cynthia Winton-Henry at the Body Wisdom office in California. They connected us with other InterPlay celebrants across the United States. We awarded Lesly the InterPlay story chain in front of the entire country. We also bowed and acknowledged the InterPlay leadership including our very own Jennifer Denning, who founded InterPlay Atlanta.
Before all was done and said, we sang Happy Birthday to Gerry Cook. Co-creative directors Jennifer Denning and I (Ruth Schowalter, aka Hallelujah Truth) are so appreciative to all who helped organize and create this event, those who came to the event to honor Lesly, and to the InterPlay co-founders Phil and Cynthia! Thank you!
Thanks for photos from Callahan Pope McDonough and Tony Martin as well as me, Ruth Schowalter!

Monster truck, Dixie Speedway, Woodstock, Georgia, United States, North America
A monster truck is a pickup truck, typically styled after pickup trucks' bodies, modified or purposely built with extremely large wheels and suspension. They are used for competition and popular sports entertainment and in some cases they are featured alongside motocross races, mud bogging, tractor pulls and car-eating robots. A monster truck show sometimes involves the truck crushing smaller vehicles beneath its huge tires. These trucks can run up and over most man-made barriers, so they are equipped with remote shut-off switches, called the Remote Ignition Interruptor (RII), to help prevent an accident if the driver loses control at any time. At some events, only one truck is on the course at a time, while most feature two drivers racing each other on symmetrical tracks, with the losing driver eliminated in single-elimination tournament fashion. In recent years, many monster truck competitions have ended with a freestyle event. Somewhat akin to dressage with giant trucks, drivers are free to select their own course around the track and its obstacles. Drivers will often try donuts, wheelstands and jumps during this segment. Additional items for the drivers to crush, usually including a motor home, are frequently placed on the track specifically for the freestyle event. Other obstacles sometimes placed on the track include school buses and small airplanes. In the late 1960s, modified pickup trucks were becoming popular and the sports of mud bogging and truck pulling were gaining in popularity. Several truck owners had created lifted trucks to compete in such events, and soon competition to hold the title of biggest truck developed. The trucks which garnered the most national attention were Bob Chandler's Bigfoot, Everett Jasmer's USA-1, Fred Shafer and Jack Willman Sr.'s Bear Foot, and Jeff Dane's King Kong. At the time, the largest tires the trucks were running were 48 inches (1.2 m) in diameter. In April 1981, Bob Chandler drove over cars in Bigfoot in what is often believed to be the first monster truck to crush cars. Chandler drove Bigfoot over a pair of cars in a field as a test of the truck's ability, and filmed it to use as a promotional tool in his four wheel drive performance shop. An event promoter saw the video of the car crush and asked Chandler to do it in front of a crowd. Initially hesitant because of the destructive image that could be associated with Bigfoot, Chandler eventually caved in. After some smaller shows, Chandler performed the feat in the Pontiac Silverdome in 1982. At this show, Chandler also debuted a new version of Bigfoot with 66-inch (1.7 m) diameter tires. At a prior event in the early 1980s when Bigfoot was still running 48 in (1.2 m) terra tires, Bob George, one of the owners of a motorsport promotion company named Truck-a-rama (now the USHRA), is said to have coined the phrase monster truck when referring to Bigfoot. The term monster truck became the generic name for all trucks with oversized terra tires. Debate over who did the first car crush is often discussed. There are claims that in the late 1970s, Jeff Dane's King Kong (who referred to his truck as the Bigger Foot) had crushed cars at Great Lakes Dragway in Union Grove, Wisconsin. Another truck, known as High Roller (currently known as Thunder Beast), also claimed to have documented car crushes in Washington State before Bigfoot, though said documentation has never surfaced. Cyclops, then owned by the Dykman Brothers, also claims to have crushed burning cars before Bigfoot. However, the earliest, widely-available and verified video footage showing a monster truck crushing cars that exists shows Bob Chandler driving Bigfoot while crushing two mid-seventies automobiles in April 1981. This video was what the promoter viewed that motivated him to ask Chandler to perform the car crush in front of a crowd. King Kong and Bear Foot each followed Bigfoot to 66-inch-diameter (1.7 m) tires, and soon other monster trucks, such as King Krunch, Maddog, and Virginia Giant were being constructed. These early trucks were built off of stock chassis which were heavily reinforced, used leaf spring suspension, a stock body, and heavy military axles to support the tires. As a result, the trucks were incredibly heavy, often between 13,000 to 20,000 lb (5,900 to 9,100 kg), and most times had to crawl up onto the cars. For most of the early 1980s, monster trucks performed primarily exhibitions as a side show to truck pulling or mud bogging events. In 1985, major promoters, such as the USHRA and TNT Motorsports, began racing monster trucks on a regular basis. The races, as they are today, were in the form of single elimination drag races, held over a course littered with obstacles. The change to racing eventually led truck owners to begin building lighter trucks, with more power.

Whale Shark, Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta, Georgia, United States, North America
The whale shark, Rhincodon typus, is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest extant fish species. The largest confirmed individual had a length of 12.65 meters (41.50 ft) and a weight of more than 21.5 metric tons (47,000 lb), and there are unconfirmed reports of considerably larger whale sharks. Claims of individuals over 14 meters (46 ft) long and weighing at least 30 metric tons (66,000 lb) are not uncommon. The whale shark holds many records for sheer size in the animal kingdom, most notably being by far the largest living non-mammalian vertebrate, rivaling many of the largest dinosaurs in weight. It is the sole member of the genus Rhincodon and the family, Rhincodontidae (called Rhiniodon and Rhinodontidae before 1984), which belongs to the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. The species originated approximately 60 million years ago. The whale shark is found in tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open sea with a lifespan of about 70 years. Although whale sharks have very large mouths, as filter feeders they feed mainly, though not exclusively, on plankton, which are microscopic plants and animals. However, the BBC program Planet Earth filmed a whale shark feeding on a school of small fish. The same documentary showed footage of a whale shark timing its arrival to coincide with the mass spawning of fish shoals and feeding on the resultant clouds of eggs and sperm. The species was distinguished in April 1828 after the harpooning of a 4.6 metres (15.1 ft) specimen in Table Bay, South Africa. Andrew Smith, a military doctor associated with British troops stationed in Cape Town, described it the following year. The name whale shark comes from the fish's physiology, being as large as some species of whales and also a filter feeder like many whale species. The whale shark inhabits all tropical and warm-temperate seas. Primarily pelagic, seasonal feeding aggregations occur at several coastal sites such as the southern and eastern parts of South Africa; Gladden Spit in Belize; Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia; Great Rann of Kutch in India; Útila in Honduras; Southern Leyte. Donsol, Pasacao and Batangas in the Philippines; off Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox in Yucatan, Mexico; Ujung Kulon National Park in Indonesia; Nosy Be in Madagascar Off Tofo Reef near Inhambane in Mozambique, and the Tanzanian islands of Mafia, Pemba, Zanzibar and, very rarely, Eilat, Israel and Aqaba, Jordan. Although typically seen offshore, it has been found closer to land, entering lagoons or coral atolls, and near the mouths of estuaries and rivers. Its range is generally restricted to about ±30° latitude. It is capable of diving to depths of at least 1,286 metres (4,219 ft), and is migratory. On 7 February 2012, a large whale shark was found floating 150 kilometres (93 mi) off the coast of Karachi, Pakistan. The length of the specimen was said to be between 11 and 12 metres (36 and 39 ft), with a weight of around 7,000 kilograms (15,000 lb). In 2011 the largest aggregation of whale sharks ever recorded was reported from the Yucatan coast of Mexico, in which more than 400 animals gathered in one place to feed on spawn from the little tunny, Euthynnus alletteratus. As a filter feeder it has a capacious mouth which can be up to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) wide and contains 10 filter pads and between 300 and 350 rows of tiny teeth. It has five large pairs of gills. Two small eyes are located towards the front of the shark's wide, flat head. The body is mostly grey with a white belly; three prominent ridges run along each side of the animal and the skin is marked with a checkerboard of pale yellow spots and stripes. These spots are unique to each individual and are useful for counting populations. Its skin can be up to 10 centimetres (3.9 in) thick. The shark has a pair each of dorsal fins and pectoral fins. Juveniles' tails have a larger upper than lower fin while the adult tail becomes semi-lunate (crescent-shaped). Spiracles are just behind the eyes. The whale shark is the largest non-cetacean animal in the world. The average size of adult whale sharks is estimated at 9.7 metres (31.82 ft) and 9 tonnes (20,000 lb). The largest verified specimen was caught on 11 November 1947, near Baba Island, in Karachi, Pakistan. It was 12.65 metres (41.50 ft) long, weighed more than 21.5 tonnes (47,000 lb), and had a girth of 7 metres (23.0 ft). Stories exist of vastly larger specimens quoted lengths of 18 metres (59 ft) and 45.5 tonnes (100,000 lb) are not uncommon in the popular shark literature -- but no scientific records support their existence. In 1868 the Irish natural scientist Edward Perceval Wright obtained several small whale shark specimens in the Seychelles, but claimed to have observed specimens in excess of 15 metres (49.2 ft), and tells of reports of specimens surpassing 21 metres (68.9 ft).
Needle Nose Gar at the Georgia Aquarium Freshwater Exhibit
The longnose gar, Lepisosteus osseus, is a primitive ray-finned fish of the gar family. It is also known as the needlenose gar. The longnose gar ranges in length from 60--182 cm (24--72 in) and weighs 0.5--3.5 kg (1.1--7.7 lb); The world record is 50.31 pounds, caught in Trinity River, Texas in 1954; FishBase reports a maximum size of 2 m (6.6 ft). Average life span is 17- 20 years. The snout is elongated into a narrow beak containing many large teeth. The gar has a long body, that is shaped like a cylinder, and is covered with diamond-shape scales. It has a long black streak across the body. The longnose gar is found in rivers and lakes throughout the eastern half of the United States, as far north as southern Quebec and southern Ontario in the Great Lakes and Ottawa River and as far south as northern Mexico. The most concentrated numbers of longnose gars are found throughout the American Deep South, Texas, Alabama (Cahaba River system), and anywhere along the Mississippi River. Longnose Gar are found in warm, shallow water with abundant vegetation. Although angling for longnose gars is not the dominant method of capturing them due to their tough, bony mouth, they will take live baits. They are more often captured by specialized methods that entangle the teeth in nylon threads, by bowfishing, or by spearfishing.
If angling for gar, a small circle hook should be used, allowing the gar several minutes with it. The circle hook will prevent any serious injury to the gar, as it is designed to catch only in the corner of the mouth. The fish are known as nocturnal feeders in some waters, so anglers should be prepared to angle for them in the twilight.
Remembering the Ramstein Air Show Disaster August 28, 1988
The Ramstein air show disaster occurred on Sunday August 28, 1988 during the Flugtag '88 airshow at the US Ramstein Air Base near the city of Kaiserslautern, West Germany.
Aircraft of the Italian Air Force display team collided during their display, crashing to the ground in front of a crowd of about 300,000 people. 67 spectators and 3 pilots died. 346 spectators sustained serious injuries in the resulting explosion and fire, and hundreds of others had minor injuries.
At the time it was the deadliest air show accident (until overtaken in 2002 by the Sknyliv air show disaster).
Background
Ten Aermacchi MB-339 PAN jets from the Italian Air Force display team, Frecce Tricolori, were performing their 'pierced heart' (Italian: Cardioide, German: Durchstoßenes Herz) formation. In this formation, two groups of aircraft create a heart shape in front of the audience along the runway. In the completion of the lower tip of the heart, the two groups pass each other parallel to the runway. The heart is then pierced, in the direction of the audience, by a lone aircraft.
The crash
The mid-air collision took place as the two heart-forming groups passed each other and the heart-piercing aircraft hit them. The piercing aircraft crashed onto the runway and consequently both the fuselage and resulting fireball of aviation fuel tumbled into the spectator area, hitting the crowd and coming to rest against a refrigerated trailer being used to dispense ice cream to the various vendor booths in the area.
At the same time, one of the damaged aircraft from the heart-forming group crashed into the emergency medical evacuation UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, injuring the helicopter's pilot, Captain Kim Strader. He died weeks later, on Saturday September 17, 1988, at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas, USA from burns he suffered in the accident.
The pilot of the aircraft that hit the helicopter had ejected, but was killed as he hit the runway before his parachute opened. The third aircraft disintegrated in the collision and parts of it were spread along the runway.
After the crash, the remaining aircraft regrouped and landed at Sembach Air Base.
Emergency response
Of the 31 people who died at the scene, 28 had been hit by debris in the form of airplane parts, concertina wire and from items on the ground. Sixteen of the fatalities occurred in the days and weeks after the disaster due to severe burns, the last being the burned and injured helicopter pilot.
About 500 people had to seek hospital treatment following the event.
The disaster revealed serious shortcomings in the handling of large-scale medical emergencies by German civil and American military authorities. US military personnel did not immediately allow German ambulances onto the base, and the rescue work was generally hampered by a lack of efficiency and coordination. The rescue coordination center in Kaiserslautern was unaware of the disaster's scale as much as an hour after it occurred, even though several German medevac helicopters and ambulances had already arrived on site and left with patients. American helicopters and ambulances provided the quickest and largest means of evacuating burn victims, but did not have sufficient capacities for treating them, or had difficulty finding them. Further confusion was added by the American military using different standards for intravenous catheters from German paramedics. (A single standard was codified in 1995 and updated with a newer version in 2013).
Over 600 people reported to the clinic that afternoon to donate blood.
A crisis counseling center was immediately established at the nearby Southside Base Chapel and remained open throughout the week. Base mental health professionals provided group and individual counseling in the weeks following, and surveyed the response workers two months following the tragedy and again six months after the disaster to gauge recovery.
