Canyoneering: Full Granary Canyon - Moab, Utah
Join me on a trip through the beautifully carved canyons of Utah. Over the Memorial day weekend some friends and I made our way down Granary canyon, which is broken up into two sections. The second of which features more difficult rappels and a monster 197 ft. rappel.

Canyoning Tour Services - Granary Canyon - Moab Cliffs And Canyons - Guide Services
Our Full Day “advanced” canyoneering routes require physical exertion and stamina. These trips are a lot of fun for people who enjoy being active outside for a good part of the day, getting a full-body workout and pushing their own limits either physically or mentally.
The trailhead for Granary Canyon is located high above Moab and very near to the mesa top of Dead Horse State Park. Although this trip is classified as advanced, Granary Canyon is suitable for adventurous beginners looking for a lot of rappels and plenty of canyon obstacles. This trip begins with perhaps the best view of the dramatic La Sal Mountains and the labyrinthine landscape of the Behind the Rocks area west of Moab.
It is here where the Cane Creek Anticline brushes up against the Kings Bottom Syncline to create a roiling sea of polished, ancient rock. Details of the geological processes at work are punctuated throughout the day (rock talk!) since the views beg to be discussed and interpreted.
This stunning view will be our steady back drop as we negotiate the beautiful canyons and corridors of Granary Canyon. Named for the occasional ancient storage bins used by Moab’s early inhabitants, the Ancestral Puebloans (formerly known as the Anasazi). These small, well-hidden rock structures were the first prototypes of the building technique (using local mortar) that gave rise to the more famous cliff palaces located elsewhere in the Four Corners area.
One challenge of the canyon (and there will be many!) will be to locate the granaries, arches and the occasional natural bridge that this impressive canyon harbors.
Onto the other challenges! You’ll experience six miles of moderate hiking, 2000 feet of elevation loss with an occasional short, easy section of down climbing – often attached to a rope for extra security.
Then there are the rappels! With a mix of easy and challenging rappels you’ll have the chance to try out some “advanced” rope techniques. The rappels drop you into some incredibly beautiful and unique formations – the work of water and gravity creating artworks of stone.
The rappelling skills you’ll have mastered throughout the day will be tested with our last rappel – a 200ft drop that deposits us close to the banks of the Colorado River!
Water Canyon Rappelling Trip (Preview)
Water Canyon is a stunning red sandstone canyon located on Canaan Mountain, south of Zion National Park, above the town of Hildale, Utah. Relatively unknown, this beautiful area is great for day hikes, overnight backpacking trips, and canyoneering excursions. During Summer 2015 I took my wife and several of my siblings rappelling. For most of them it was their first trip. It was a perfect day and we had a fantastic time. This is a quick preview of the longer, 90 minute version that features mostly video narrated by my brother Doug. Enjoy!

These are some of the most beautiful places I've ever been! The lush green canyons in Oregon and Washington are in a class of their own!
Canyoneering South of Lake Powell and Spenser 11-02-10.mov
We picked Stretch up at the Mexican boarder, after she finished hiking the Continental Divide Trail. From there, we hiked a few slot canyons on our way back home. The first canyon is on the south side of Lake Powell, AZ, and the second is Spenser Canyon, on the Escalante River, UT.
Stretch, being the unassuming, mild mannered and community minded type, never shows off her super powers. However, in the slot canyons, she couldn't hide her true colors. She is a truly amazing young lady!
Canyoneering Arch (Johnson) Canyon, Snow Canyon State Park, Utah
This was a fun canyon to run, fast with a big drop at the end, right outside of St George, Utah. Took a little detour on the approach and had a look down a small canyon that may have never been descended...yet.
Getting back on track we encountered pools at every rappel, a wetsuit is a good idea for this one. The water was surprisingly cold.
Six rappels, the fifth one is around 110ft and the final rappel is 190ft...nice big drops to finish out the ride.
A fantastic canyoning adventure that can be had in 3 to 5 hours. You do have to stage a vehicle and this canyon is closed during the summer. A permit is required, heads up.

Lindsey Creek Oregon- Canyoneering the Columbia River Gorge- The Narrows
Join us as we hike high into the Columbia River Gorge to find a small creek called Lindsey Creek. This creek requires Canyoneering experience and off trail guiding capabilities. The falls have no names that I know of, so these are nicknames to differentiate from the several falls we explored.

Canyoneering Boltergeist Canyon (January), Dixie National Forest, Utah
How to spend the first day of 2019? In a canyon, of course. Had a fun ride in Boltergeist canyon with a sweet 30ft downclimb instead of rappelling and an alternate final 100ft rappel. Temp never got above freezing. Happy New Year!

Canyoneering Yankee Doodle Canyon - Leeds Utah, June 2013
Early In June a group of us decided to hike the well known Yankee Doodle Canyon. This little gem is near Zion National Park. Yankee Doodle is rated 3B I. It has quick access to the trail head, and a short exit. THis canyon is a great canyon for those who are new to the sport. We had a great time. The canyon has a dramatic start with a really fun rappel. The rest of the canyon has many more fun obstacles and down climbs.
