We had a very windy, but very fun, hike around the rim trail at Capulin Volcano National Monument! The kids earned their badge and patch for this National Park site, and we all enjoyed learning the history of the area and taking in the views.

Capulin Volcano National Monument - Capulin, New Mexico
Video from day 7 of my 2008 vacation. This was taken near Capulin Volcano National Monument outside of Capulin, New Mexico. Saying it was windy on this day would be an understatement; the nearby Raton station was recording winds of up to 60 mph (97 kmh) at the time.
A part of the Capulin Volcano National Monument, Capulin Volcano is an example of an extinct cinder cone volcano that is part of the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field. A paved road spirals around the volcano and visitors can drive up to a parking lot at the rim. Hiking trails circle the rim as well as lead down into the mouth of the volcano.

May 2009...Capulin Volcano, Capulin, New Mexico
May 2009...You can see Capulin Volcano from the main highway (US-64) which is about 2 miles to the North. You drive around the mountain to get to the top and once there you can look down into the crater or even walk down into it. It is pretty neat. The only complaint that I have with this visit is the little gnat type flies that were all over the cars and our scooters. I had to literally brush them off of the seat or just sit on them. You can see them all over the windshield as I was driving down. They are pretty strong as some of them hung on for dear life when we got back to the main highway and headed out towards Clayton, New Mexico. Those gnats hung on even at 70+ mph, but I ran up to 100+ mph to blow all of them off my Wing. We were told that these gnats are only a problem for a few days every time of the year, so I guess that we were there when they were a problem. I have been there before and we didnt have the gnats
Driving on Capulin Volcano National Monument, New Mexico
Dashcam video of the drive up then down Capulin Volcano in Capulin, New Mexico. This is a pretty nice place with a path to take you down into the volcano crater as well as a wonderful trail around the rim. Great views all around and the drive will raise the heart rate of wide-eyed passengers.
Capulin Volcano Site in New Mexico
The view from the road. My write-up:
EXTREME SHELF ROAD! Capulin Volcano National Monument
Capulin Volcano National Monument in New Mexico protects a 60,000 year old volcano. A paved road goes to the 8,182' summit of the volcano. The road is a two lane shelf road, with one side against a rock wall and the other a foot away from a plunge to the valley floor 100's of feet below. The view from the top is amazing.

Riding Capulin
Riding to the top of Capulin Volcano on a motorcycle, in Capulin Volcano National Park, Capulin, New Mexico. Pretty freaky on a windy day.
Bennett Ranch - Capulin Volcano National Monument
Water, or the lack of water in the Texas Panhandle made ranching extremely difficult and caused Milton Bennett to look Westward. In the 1930's, the fresh water springs of Des Moines, NM enticed the Bennetts to relocate here. The Bennetts felt they were in a place where they could not only raise their cattle, but their family as well. The shallow creeks still meander through the land sustaining the ranch today.
