BHTV: Explore the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock, NC
Today we are at Connemara, the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site in Flat Rock, where this influential writer, poet, and musician lived with his family from 1945–1967. His descendants tell us that they were drawn to this area, like so many people are, for its mild climate and extraordinary beauty. Sandburg provided a popular voice for the American people of the 20th century, and fortunately for us, he still speaks to us through the beauty and serenity of Connemara in Flat Rock.

“Carl Sandburg was known for several things in the literary world. He was a poet, he was a social commentator, he was a biographer of Abraham Lincoln. When he wrote, he didn't use anything that was esoteric. Everything, all of his vocabulary, was just sort of ordinary, common sense, everyman's kind of vocabulary. That's just the way he was. He would never have thought of shutting himself out from other people. He was just trying to use ordinary words to express some really deep-seated philosophical principles about his life, about life in general, about the United States, about the history of this country. And that was just his way of doing it—simplicity and not exclusivity.”
“The Sandburgs, when they moved here after the Second World War, began what was really a very, seeming to us at least, to be a very ideal life. They had lots of space, they had fresh air, it was quiet back here. They had, at that time, 245 acres of land, much of it being the Big Glassy Mountain and where the trails and all are now.”
“Mr. Sandburg stayed in the house, stayed up all night, wrote, thought, researched. Mrs. Sandburg probably went to bed at shortly after sunset, got up early in the morning, and came down here to the goat barnyard where we're standing right now, and she began her work with the goats. She was a founding member of the American Dairy Goat Association. She did pioneering things in goat genetics and goat husbandry that nobody else in the country had done at the time, and she was extremely successful. Her goats won all kinds of awards. They still do—all of the goats that we have here are direct descendants from Mrs. Sandburg's line, and if anybody doubts that, there are all of Mrs. Sandburg's records in the house, all on little index cards. And if you were a real doubting Thomas you could just trace back the lineage of all of these goats here back to her time.”
“There are a number of things that make this a unique place. Certainly the house is not to be missed. The house looks as if the Sandburgs packed their suitcases and left about 10:30 this morning after they'd washed the breakfast dishes. It's been absolutely untouched, untampered with, unimproved. It's not been glamorized in any way. You see the entire house, you'll see his bedroom with his old orange crate and the typewriter where he stayed up all night typing. And the house shows just how simply they lived. There was nothing pretentious about it. It's a magnificent collection, tribute to Mr. Sandburg.”
“And then, of course, the sundry trails that are definitely not to be missed. And spend as much time as you can possibly afford bonding with the goats. You will have had a wonderful time at Connemara.”

Yazdani worries about the unrest in the part of the world she came from, but is looking forward to life as a new American citizen. Elvis Lafunor from Uganda says kids at his workplace, the Black Mountain Home for Children, Youth and Families, helped him study to become an American citizen. Lafunor says he is grateful to God and looking forward to voting in the upcoming election.nBy Karen WynnenFollow Karen Wynne on Twitter @KarenWynneWLOS

“I feel so fortunate to live in Hendersonville, because I'm able to attend the Flat Rock Playhouse. The talent and artistic directing and acting is just stupendous,” says Vickie Leeds, season ticket holder.
“When you think of Western North Carolina, you don't think ‘Broadway,’ professional-level entertainment, live entertainment. And we have it, right here. It's just this amazing jewel, sort of tucked away in the mountains. And we have so much pride in bringing those shows to the people of this area,” says Lisa Bryant, artistic director at the Flat Rock Playhouse.
Just south of Hendersonville, lies the small, picturesque town of Flat Rock, North Carolina. Its population is just over 3,000, but every year, thousands more come to visit the Carl Sandburg Home, explore Little Rainbow Row and the Village of Flat Rock's shops and cafés, and of course, take in a local show at the Flat Rock Playhouse.
Nearby Hendersonville's welcoming Main Street is a great place to shop and dine before a show. Many theater patrons make a weekend of their stay in order to explore all the area has to offer. With a vibrant arts scene, historic charm, and a friendly community, Flat Rock offers so many ways to Live the Life You Choose.
“I've been going to the Playhouse for 15 years,” saya Leeds. “And each year the shows get better and better, and funnier and funnier. I think for a theater that's in a small town such as Hendersonville, the quality is superb.
“In 2010, we opened our downtown theater space, Playhouse Downtown, on Main Street, and we love it,” says Bryant. “We love being actually on Main Street and being downtown and among all the stores and amazing restaurants that continue to pop up downtown—that are really tasty and delicious—and great shopping. To be right there in the middle of all of that, and be available to folks, is an exciting partnership.”
“We also do our Music on the Rock series down there, which is a series of concerts throughout the year that are a lot of fun as well, for our music lovers in the community, of which there are many.” says Bryant. “We really are here for the community. We want to partner with the community so that together we're creating an enviable life for families and our children and our businesses. Everybody benefits.”

Shutdown Impact In Tar Heel State
The federal government shutdown will be felt here in North Carolina, from the mountains to the coast.
U.S. Army Airborne and Special Forces operations at Ft. Bragg will not be affected, but about 40% of the civilian workforce on the base will be furloughed.
Here in Western North Carolina, facilities along the Blue Ridge Parkway will be closed. Tourists can travel the 469-mile scenic road that stretches from here to Virginia, but campgrounds, overlooks and parking lots will be gated shut.
The same goes for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including the popular Cades Cove Loop Road.
The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock also will not be open.
This is a great time of year, the leaves are starting to change, weather is beautiful and I guess the little guy like myself doesn't think about the shenanigans, said tourist Bob Patrick .
The last government shutdown happened in late 1995 and early 1996. That closure lasted a total of 28 days.

Ultimately, Sandburg rose to the highest literary circles of his day—and yet he was able to come to terms with his father’s tradesman persona and view him as a man “superior to books.” So he says in this absorbing 1958 interview. The conversation, steered by the network’s Director of Public Affairs Service Programs, Edward Stanley, encompasses early political experiences from Sandburg’s childhood; his college years and subsequent hobo wanderlust; his attempt to discover a basic definition of poetry; and detailed discussions centered on his Lincoln series. Sandburg also reads his poem “Phizzog” and performs folk songs.
