Built in the second half of the fifteenth century by Ferdinand I of Aragon, the castle of Pizzo has two cylindrical corner towers, of which the great tower, called mastra tower, is of Angevin origin (about 1380). The massive quadrangular body, with casemates and ground floors, which descends perpendicular to the cliff on the side of the sea, is on the other side surrounded by a moat, on which the drawbridge and the door, located between one of the round towers, on the west side, and the angled part, they allowed access. The fortress was equipped with walkways that led out of the city and was built in order to defend the coast from the Barbary and ad maintenendos cives in fide.
When the land of the Pizzo passed from the house of Aragon to that of the Sanseverinos and to these confiscated in 1504 for a crime of felony, it was given to Don Diego de Mendoza, general of the Galee; and from him, by inheritance right of succession, said goods passed to the Casa dei Silva, to which belonged the Duke of the Infantado, who preserved them with all the rights and privileges annexed until 1806, when - by Decree of King Giuseppe Napoleone - feudalism was abolished with all its attributions and prerogatives.
After the Subversive Law of Feudalism, the castle often raises questions of property rights between the municipality and the military genius. He was occupied by the Government, which used it as a barracks and as a prison.
It then passed to the Municipality of Pizzo, to whom the Italian Government ceded it, retaining only the part that - with the Decree of 3 June 1892 - was declared a National Monument. It was damaged by the earthquake of 1783, which destroyed the upper chambers; they were rebuilt in 1790 at the expense of the Ducal Administration. Today, some of its structures have been lost; while, for the rest, the building retains its original appearance. In its rooms, the event took place that - as A. Dumas says - became Pizzo one of the Homeric stations of the Napoleonic Iliad.
Gioacchino MURAT, king of Naples and brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, in an extreme attempt to regain the kingdom of Naples, landed at the marina of Pizzo Sunday, October 8, 1815, trying to raise the population against Ferdinand IV of Bourbon.But the attempt failed. Gioacchino and his small group were overwhelmed and locked up in the castle, where, five days later, following a summary trial, the king was sentenced to death by the Military Commission ordered by the Bourbon government.
He faced the imprisonment and the judgment, which he was so precipitately subjected, with pride and great dignity, which he preserved to the last, widely honoring his reputation as a brave man of extraordinary value on the battlefields. The one who had been the hero of Abukir and of Moscova, fearlessly faced death, which was given to him by shooting in the sieve of the castle, half an hour after the conviction.

La storia di Pizzo Calabro è legata alla morte di Gioacchino Murat, Re di Napoli, uomo valoroso, impavido che cercava la vittoria e la riconquista del suo regno e invece trovò la morte.
Nel castello Aragonese, fu tenuto prigioniero e in seguito condannato a morte Gioacchino Murat, re di Napoli e cognato di Napoleone Bonaparte.
Venne fucilato il 13 ottobre 1815, dopo alcuni giorni di prigionia e un processo fatto nella sala principale del castello e fu poi sepolto nella chiesa di San Giorgio.

Il Castello Murat è una fortezza Aragonese del 1492 costruito attorno alla torre grande del periodo angioino,1380. Questo maniero venne retto a difesa delle coste contro l'attacco dei saraceni. All'interno vi è la ricostruzione degli ambienti in cui trascorse gli ultimi giorni di vita Gioacchino Murat nell'ottobre del 1815.

All’ interno del maniero una ricostruzione storica riproduce gli ultimi giorni di vita di Gioacchino Murat, rappresentando i diversi momenti della detenzione del Re e dei suoi uomini nelle diverse aree del Castello: all’interno delle celle nei semisotterranei è riprodotta la loro prigionia, di Gioacchino Murat e di alcuni soldati della sua spedizione.
