Vote Yes - Cedar Rapids Public Library
Citizens of Cedar Rapids have come together in support of the upcoming Library Levy vote on Tuesday, November 3rd.
The Cedar Rapids library has been historically underfunded compared to libraries in communities the size of Cedar Rapids and smaller, even within their own state of Iowa. The time has come to correct this problem once and for all - to support a library of the modern times, an organization that gives everything it receives back to it's community ten fold.

United Way Sinclair Society Event at the Cedar Rapids Public Library
Michael & Mollie Gannon spoke at United Way's Sinclair Society Event on September 17th, 2013. Michael is Group President, Fixed Asset Division, CRST International. Mollie is a community volunteer.
Thomas M'Elderry Sinclair was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1842. Immigrating to the United States in 1862, he began the Sinclair Packing Plant in 1871. His company flourished and Mr. Sinclair felt morally obligated to be a generous corporate citizen. Because of Mr. Sinclair's belief in and commitment to our community, United Way of East Central Iowa has named its philanthropic leadership society in his honor
Generous donors who are expanding their philanthropy with gifts ranging from $1,250 to $9,999, explore new avenues for community engagement and recognition. Members have a deep understanding and commitment to the work United Way does in our communities. In 2012, members of the T.M. Sinclair Society contributed $1.85 million.
If you would like more information on becoming a leadership giver, contact us at (319) 398-5372.

Cedar Rapids Iowa FEMA LOST The Public Library and Lisa Kuzela
We have a nice library but it costs us big time and the insurance company raked in the big bucks. That's not how I wanted this money spent when I voted for it. This is only one of the many reasons I will be voting no this November
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Cedar Rapids /ˈsiːdər ˈræpɨdz/ is the second largest city in Iowa and is the county seat of Linn County. The city lies on both banks of the Cedar River, 20 miles (32 km) north of Iowa City and 100 miles (160 km) east of Des Moines, the state's capital and largest city. Until massive flooding in 2008, the city's government was headquartered in the Veterans Memorial Building, near the Linn County Courthouse and jail on Mays Island in the Cedar River; Cedar Rapids was one of a few cities in the world, along with Paris, France, with governmental offices on a municipal island.
A flourishing center for arts and culture in Eastern Iowa, the city is home to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library, the Paramount Theatre, Theatre Cedar Rapids, the African-American Historical Museum and Cultural Center of Iowa, and the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance. Cedar Rapids is an economic hub of the state, located in the core of the Interstate 380 Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Technology Corridor of Linn, Benton, Jones, Johnson, and Washington counties. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city population was 126,326.

The Cedar Rapids Beltway - Part 2
A video of me driving around the entire Cedar Rapids Beltway (or perhaps a better term for it would be loop, with beltway referring individually to the northern and southern roads that make up the loop). This is Part 2. Part 1 can be seen at
Completed in December 2018, the Cedar Rapids Beltway is a complete loop of four-lane highways that encircles most of the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Starting from the southwest and working around counter-clockwise, the beltway consist of the following highways:
-US Highway 30
-US Highway 218
-US Highway 151
-Iowa Highway 13
-Iowa Highway 100
Along with Cedar Rapids, the beltway also serves the suburbs of Fairfax, Bertram, Marion, Hiawatha and Covington.
This video was recorded on December 29, 2018. I was inspired by YouTube user TheSolarcatcher ( who recorded portions of the Cedar Rapids Beltway in early 2017 before it was completed.
A small update: at the end of this second part, I mention the tidbit about there only being three Exit Zero's in the entire state of Iowa. This is no longer true. As of late 2019, the stretch of I-680 east of I-29 has been re-designated as I-880 (a change I personally see as pointless, to be honest). The western terminus of I-880 at I-29 is now the state's fourth Exit Zero.

Story from XQ | Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids is still rebuilding after a devastating flood in 2008. And some educators in the Iowa city are involving students in that challenge. It’s just one way the program, Iowa BIG, is partnering with the community to promote new ways of learning.
“The idea that teachers create fake problems is just so silly to me. Your community has [infinite] problems that are always better than that math problem,” says Shawn Cornally, who teaches STEM disciplines at the program Iowa BIG.
Watch to find out more about how Cedar Rapids is turning real-world issues into learning experiences.

Finishing the Final Touches
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA(CBS2/FOX28)-- The Cedar Rapids School District is working around the clock to make sure everything is in place for the first day of school.Cleveland Elementary, as well as Washington and Jefferson High Schools sustained significant damage when June storms brought heavy rain and strong winds. The first day is August 26th, but there are a few final pieces that need to be touched up.With the damage we had over at Cleveland and then a short two weeks later, the damage we had at Jefferson and Washington, it sure put a lot of stress on staff, Cedar Rapids Building and Grounds Manager Rob Kleinsmith said. The winds and water tore through school buildings and left a mess for the district to clean up and added to the construction work they already had on their summer list. But for 8th grader Ryan Hallman, he just is glad to see progress, If it didn't get fixed then people wouldn't be able to go to school, Ryan said. The district said they are not worried about that, We're on track for the amount of damage that we had, Kleinsmith said.Crews started cleaning up the mess from day one but with one week left, they are getting close to being done. We're making progress, Kleinsmith said.If you were to see the before and after pictures, you could see how much work and time the district has put into making sure everything is safe for students to return next week. There are just some finishing touc

Disparity all around
In regard to the property and dwelling known as 1411 3rd Street NW Cedar Rapids, Iowa Legal Description: HULL'S 6TH STR/LB 8 46
It has been stated and informed that this dwelling must be demolished according to 44FR, Ch1 §80.19 (7)(d) removal of existing building. This rule only applies to Existing incompatible facilities. We would contest that this dwelling is not an incompatible facility.
Compatibility is defined by §80.19 (a) open space requirements. §80.19 (a)(2)(ii) a public restroom, or §80.19 (a)(2)(iii) a structure that is compatible with open space and conserves the natural function of the flood plain.
This dwelling, designed to take in water, during periods of flooding, would neither reduce the volume of water the flood plain is acquired during flooding, nor impede the flow of the water. An open basement, where the basement would be allowed to fill with water, more than accounts for any volume of space the structure takes up above the ground. Therefore, filling the requirements of §80.19 (a)(2)(iii)(ii).
Second issue around this dwelling is its historical value. The dwelling is listed as historical in the F.E.M.A. Resolution of Adverse Effects to Historical Properties Defined as Concrete Block Houses - near the former Best Block Company at 1510 1stAvenue; modeled after pattern book house from 1908 & 1911 Sears Roebuck & Co. plan. This house is a Sears & Roebuck pattern house was assembled in 1910.
The people of this neighborhood have design ideas that show that this dwelling can be compatible with §80.19.
Secondly, we are asking to be present at this reviewing in order to give a more detailed explanation. Ultimately, we would like to see this dwelling saved and a revised plan sent to Dusty Pogones as part of the scope of work, requested by the city, for his approval.
Dusty Pogones, Lead Mitigation Project Officer - Property Acquisition
Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management
7105 NW 70th Ave. Camp Dodge, Bld W-4 Johnston, IA 50131
Finally, finding an alternate use for a historical dwelling, instead of demolishing it, would be a commendable public relations boost for the City of Cedar Rapids, and one of the core neighborhoods in a city that needs improvement.
In closing we are requesting that this property and dwelling have its demolition postponed until the issues presented can be reviewed.
We appreciate your consideration in these matters. Thank you for your time.
