2019 Spartanburg Soaring International Kite Festival | Chapman Cultural Center
In spring 2014, Chapman Cultural Center launched a community-wide initiative called Spartanburg Soaring! to encourage creativity, promote healthy outdoor activity, and to build civic pride. Using kites as a common theme, Spartanburg Soaring! engaged cultural curiosity and promoted active play through activities and events all across the city. The kite festival takes place in and around the Chapman Cultural Center each spring when hundreds of colorful kites fill the skies above Spartanburg.
Join us for live music, great food trucks, and makers market. Kites are available for purchase from CCC, or you can bring a kite from home.
The festival is free and open to all, including the many international kite flyers who have come from Europe, Asia, Canada, and across the United States to join the fun.
Here's what you'll find this year:
Kids Zone! - We're proud to announce the Spartanburg Soaring! Kid Zone sponsored by Cannon Roofing will feature various events scheduled throughout the day by some amazing Community Organizations!
Makers Market! - Another of Spartanburg's great assets is its artists. The Makers Market sponsored by Duke Energy will be set up where regional artisans will sell their wares–keeping 100% of their profits–so you can keep a piece of local culture even after you fly away. Everything will be affordable and locally handcrafted. If you'd like to sign up to sell and exhibit your work, fill out the application:
Food Trucks! - We'll again have an assortment of food vendors to choose from this year! Some Spartanburg favorites will be in attendance and some new options too!
Coming from out of town? Stay at the conveniently located Spartanburg Marriott just a short walk away from the festival!

A Mosaic Portrait of Spartanburg Final Exhibition | HUB-BUB Artist-in-Residence
We are celebrating the conclusion of the 2018/19 HUB-BUB AiR's community engagement project A Mosaic Portrait of Spartanburg and also say farewell to artist Ambrin Ling!
Through the project, “A Mosaic Portrait of Spartanburg,” HUB-BUB Artists-in-Residence Ambrin Ling and Marisa Adesman created a series of small paintings that picture the many, diverse visions of home as contributed by individual community members in the Spartanburg area.
On view throughout the month of July in the Artists' Guild of Spartanburg Gallery inside Chapman Cultural Center, the exhibit seeks to encourage residents to envision their individual notions of Spartanburg as home and answer the question: How does one see home through your eyes?
During the opening reception of the exhibit, Ambrin Ling will speak about the project, its process, and its outcomes. By interweaving multiple narratives, this project will not only help foster empathy between community members, it also seeks to both refine and complicate our shared understanding of Spartanburg as home.

--------
Untitled Reconstruction Project is a performance based on the 1871 testimony of residents living in Spartanburg County, South Carolina who were terrorized by the Ku Klux Klan. The interviews are adapted from The Report of the Joint Select Committee to Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States--a Federal investigation in which three Northern Congressmen interviewed many different people. They spoke to freedmen, political organizers, white, black, rich, poor, town folks, and country folks. Many of their last names may be familiar. Untitled Reconstruction Project presents these interviews, as well as contemporary writing by the cast. We are here to learn about the legacy of the Era of Reconstruction, and to discuss Spartanburg's past, present, and future. Our project is to make a space to learn, share, and heal. The production is curated by Anna Abhau Elliott and Crystal Tennille Irby. It is a collaboration with Speaking Down Barriers.
Performances for Untitled Reconstruction Project will be held at Wofford College and the Spartanburg Public Library in fall 2017.
