Chiang Saen Thailand
the banks of the Mekhong River at the southern-most point of the Golden Triangle tourist area is the ancient city of Chiang Saen. The town is still very small, even though it appears to have been a major trading crossroads since the seventh century. It was probably part of the kingdom of Yonok, and birthplace of Mengrai, who founded the kingdom of Lanna.
It was actually around 1328 that the city you can see today was laid out when King Saen Phu, Mengrai's nephew, moved the capital of Lanna to Chiang Saen, which he named after himself. This is when the walls were built and the moat dug.

???? About 'Chiang Mai Old City Wall, Moat around Chiang Mai Old Town'
A defensive moat around the old town was created long ago since nearby Taungoo Dynasty of the Bamar people was a constant threat, as were the armies of the Mongol Empire, which only decades earlier had conquered most of Yunnan, China. Along the watercourse are old fortresses called “jaeng” meaning corner in the local language. Within the square was the location of a palace of Chiang Mai’s old rulers (now a government service office), and many important ancient temples such as Wat Pra Singha with its delicate Buddha image hall or Wat Chedi Luang which has the biggest Chedi in Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai National Museum
Located near the historic Wat Jet Yod, this is the main museum of northern Thailand and is under the patronage of Their Royal Majesties, the King and Queen. It was renovated in 1996 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the founding of Chiang Mai and now features a larger and better organized exhibition.
Wat Chedi Luang
Built sometime between 1385 and 1402, during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, 7th ruler of the Mengrai dynasty, Wat Chedi Luang's massive chedi (pagoda) is a distinctive feature of the Chiang Mai skyline. At its peak, the chedi measured 60 metres across at the square base and 80 metres tall and was once the home of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred religious relic.
Wat Bupparam
Founded by King Muang Kaew in 1497,the Viharn is a traditional Lanna Style temple and was previously known as the Royal Hall of Chao Kawilorot. The second floor is heavily adorned and features two large seated Buddha images.
Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Centre
The centre is a modern multi-media museum and cultural education centre, featuring a range of media, from video, scale models, enlarged photos, wall murals and text in Thai and English. Built in 1924, the building was the former Provincial Hall of Chiang Mai and is considered to be a stunning example of post-colonial Thai architecture.
Wat Phan Tao
Wat Phan Tao is directly adjacent to Wat Chedi Luang. Although there is a wall between the two, you can walk through one to get to the other. The name of this temple means Monastery of a Thousand Kilns, in reference to the numerous Buddha images within the magnificent Wat Chedi Luang. The temple has a viharn, which is one of the few remaining all-wood structures in Chaing Mai, this was originally the ho kham which literally translates as ‘guilded hall’ and was the palace of Chiang Mai's king, Chao Mahawong, who ruled from 1846 to 1854.
Wat Phra Sing
This venerable temple, located at the end of Ratchadamnoen Road, is perhaps the most venerated in Chiang Mai, behind Doi Suthep. While the dusty parking lot and hordes of taxi drivers may be discouraging at first, this temple is certainly worth a look.
Lanna Folklife Museum
Opened alongside the Chiang Mai Historical Centre, this museum has a beautiful location, inside the old courthouse, which was renovated with the project in mind. It’s close to the three kings monument in the centre of Chiang Mai Old City. The exhibition is all about the people who live and have lived in the region, setting the scene for many daily activities through wax works and relics.
Chiang Mai Historical Centre
Opened in 2013, this new museum follows the history of the Lanna (the last 700 years), as well as touching on the period before this. This museum has a much more modern feel when compared to the Chiang Mai National Museum, and it presents information in bite-size pieces, great for children.
Suan Buak Hat Park
Although Chiang Mai Old City is a quiet place, there’s not as much green space as you might expect. Suan Buak Hat Park is the best place to go if you are looking for a chilled out afternoon. You can rent a mat if you are looking to laze under the trees or take part in some of the activities that always seem to be happening there, including aerobics, badminton, yoga and tai chi.
Wat Chiang Man
This is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai, built in 1296 at the time of the city's founding. The temple served as the residence of Chiang Mai's founder, King Mengrai, for a time. The buildings are finely decorated in red lacquer, gold leaf and mosaics of tinted mirror, wonderful examples of Lanna style architecture. Wat Chiang Man is located on Ratchaphakhinai Road, near the Chang Puak gate in the northern part of the old city.

The Golden Triangle, Thailand Myanmar & Laos
Chiangsaen would have been built by a nephew of King Mengrai (the Founder of Chiangmai)... Later on, the city was completely destroyed by Siamese army for fear it would fall in hands of Burmese enemy... From this glorious past, ruins still stand up and the Fine Arts Department of Bangkok has restored actively many testimonies of the past.
The city would have been a counter along the Mekong, which was a important way to carrying goods from China to South East Asia... The walls of the city let imagine its trade function as well as its importance in the whole region.
About 15 kilometers upriver, is the geographical point of the Golden Triangle. Here meet 3 countries, Thailand, Lao and Myanmar. The place is kitsch since local authorities have built a huge Buddha Statue, plus other unnecessary decorations dominating the Mekong... It is a place where to stop a short while to admire the river and the opposite bank on Laotian territory
But the most impressive place to go to with Chiangsaen is certainly the Ho Fi (Hall of Opium). This interactive and western look like museum is a must... Those visiting the region ought to stop and visit it. It tells us history of opium in the region as well as the role European have had in the Boxer War and the doomsday of Chinese Empire.
It features superb collections and also explains interactively, as modern Western museums do, the impact of heroin on western countries, and reveals the importance it had in Siam trade... Definitely an attraction one cannot miss if visiting the region.

Wat Klang Wiang, Chiang Rai
Visiting Wat Suan Dok in Chiang Mai [HD]
After spending a few hours in a coffee shop in teh Nimman area of Chiang Mai we went for a walk and came across this beautiful Buddhist temple.
Wat Suan Dok, built in late 14th century, houses several structures of historical significance. Among them include the principal pagoda that enshrines the Buddha's relics, a garden of whitewashed mausoleums housing the ashes of late Chiang Mai rulers and a large open-air wiharn (assembly hall).
The temple is found outside the old city wall, about 1km east of Suan Dok Gate on Suthep Road. Built by a King of Chiang Mai on the grounds of his pleasure garden, this temple was originally intended to serve as a retreat for a revered monk from Sukothai.
Next to the mausoleum garden is the golden principal pagoda, built in Lankan style and set on a raised whitewashed square base. On each of the four sides, there's an opening which allows access to the pagoda. Inside, it houses the Buddha's relics brought over from another temple in Sukhothai.
The assembly hall -- an open-air pavilion with low, sweeping roofs and wrap-around terraces -- lies next to the principal pagoda. Its large, open-sided structure is considered unique, as the assembly halls are almost always closed structures. Inside the assembly hall, the two main Buddha images, one in a sitting meditation posture and the other standing, face the opposite directions. A smaller Buddha image, set right in front of the sitting Buddha, is in similar style.
The principal Buddha image is housed inside the ordination hall. Sitting at 4.7 metres tall, it is cast in the ancient Chiang Saen style.

Thailand and Laos Border Crossing in Chiang Khong and Huay Xai
Check out buzzingtravelers.com for more travel info!
We left Chiang Rai for the border crossing at Chiang Khong and Huay Xai. It was easier than expected but a lot more steps have been added over the years to charge backpackers extra. The boat ride down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang had us feeling like cattle for two days after crossing the into Laos.
Ayutthaya temples aerial footage, Thailand
You couldn't find better aerial footage of the fabled temples of Ayutthaya in Thailand!
Ayutthaya is named after the city of Ayodhya in India, the birthplace of Rama in the Ramayana (Thai, Ramakien); Phra is a Thai royal and noble title; Nakhon designates an important or capital city; Thai honorific Sri or Si is from the Indian term of veneration Sri.
Ayutthaya (full name Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Thai: พระนครศรีอยุธยา, pronounced [pʰráʔ na.kʰɔ̄ːn sǐː ʔa.jút.tʰa.jāː] (Pronunciation); also spelled Ayudhya) city is the capital of Ayutthaya province in Thailand. Located in the valley of the Chao Phraya River, the city was founded in 1350 by King U Thong, who went there to escape a smallpox outbreak in Lop Buri and proclaimed it the capital of his kingdom, often referred to as the Ayutthaya kingdom or Siam. Ayutthaya became the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai. Its remains, characterized by the prang (reliquary towers) and gigantic monasteries, give an idea of its past splendour. It is estimated that Ayutthaya by the year 1600 CE had a population of about 300,000, with the population perhaps reaching 1,000,000 around 1700 CE, making it one of the world's largest cities at that time. In 1767, the city was destroyed by the Burmese army, resulting in the collapse of the kingdom. The Ayutthaya historical park is the ruins of the former capital of the Kingdom of Siam. It is the site of sacked and destruction of the Ayutthaya city, its art and buildings by the Burmese in 1767, which is recognized internationally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was refounded a few kilometers to the east. The city is sometimes called Venice of the East.

Chiang Mai - How to Ride an Elephant through the Golden Triangle
King Mengrai founded the city of Chiang Mai (meaning new city) in 1296, and it succeeded Chiang Rai as capital of the Lanna kingdom. The ruler was known as the Chao. The city was surrounded by a moat and a defensive wall, since nearby Burma was a constant threat. With the decline of the Lannathai kingdom, the city lost importance.
But after the Thai King Taksin helped drive out the Burmese. Chiang Mai then slowly grew in cultural, trading and economic importance to its current status as the unofficial capital of northern Thailand, second in importance only to Bangkok.
Best place to relax I have ever visited in north Thailand
Phitsanulok พิษณุโลก is an important, historic city in lower northern Thailand and is the capital of Phitsanulok Province, which stretches all the way to the Laotian border. On the banks of the Nan River, the city was originally a small Khmer outpost known as Song Kwae, before the Khwae Noi River changed its course in the 11th century CE. The Khwae Noi River แม่น้ำแควน้อย is a river in northern Thailand. It shares the same name as another river in Thailand, the popular tourist attraction also known as The River Kwai. These are two distinct bodies of water. About 1 hour ride from Phitsanulok in direction East and you will end up in the forest were you can find a beautiful place close to a dam where small tiny houses are placed on both side's of the river. You can rent a picnic house (Baht 300) and enjoy various sorts of fresh Thaifood. There is no parking fee. I haven't met any foreigner as I was there. Opening hours are from 8am - 6pm during hot season.
