9 things to do in Great Falls, Montana with kids - Lewis and Clark etc
We headed up to Great Falls, MT for several reasons. 1. Finn wanted to go to the Tae-Kwon-Do tournament. 2. We wanted to visit some online friends. 3. Melynda organized homeschool activities at the C. M. Russel museum and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. 4. We HAD to go to the Sip-N-Dip Lounge and its famous mermaids. Of course there's a ton of other things to do in Great Falls. We saw a couple of other museums, some state parks, breweries, and bike rides and more. Check more in Melynda's blog.

More about Great Falls, MT from Wikipedia:
Great Falls is a city in and the county seat of Cascade County, Montana, United States. The 2017 census estimate put the population at 58,638. The population was 58,505 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Great Falls, Montana Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Cascade County and has a population of 82,278. Great Falls was the largest city in Montana from 1950 to 1970, when Billings surpassed it. Great Falls remained the second largest city in Montana until 2000, when it was passed by Missoula. Since then Great Falls has been the third largest city in the state.
Great Falls takes its name from the series of five waterfalls in close proximity along the upper Missouri River basin that the Lewis and Clark Expedition had to portage around over a ten-mile stretch; the effort required 31 days of arduous labor during the westward leg of their 1805–06 exploration of the Louisiana Purchase and to the Pacific Northwest Coast of the Oregon Country. Each falls sports a hydroelectric dam today, hence Great Falls is nicknamed the Electric City. Currently there are two undeveloped parts of their portage route; these are included within the Great Falls Portage, a National Historic Landmark.
The city is home to the C. M. Russell Museum Complex, the University of Providence, Great Falls College Montana State University, Giant Springs, the Roe River (claimed to be the world's shortest river), the Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind, the Great Falls Voyagers minor league baseball team, and is adjacent to Malmstrom Air Force Base. The local newspaper is the Great Falls Tribune.

Exploring Montana: Missoula Area State Parks
This is the 3rd in a series of videos we'll be releasing about a 2-week trip to explore areas of Montana that we've either never seen, or have only driven through in the past. Our hope is to explore as many of Montana's State Parks as we can. For 2 weeks our home was our 2019 Outdoors RV 20FQ travel trailer, towed by our 2015 Chevrolet Silverado. Join us for a tour of the Treasure State.
Today we visit a few of the state parks in the Missoula area: Council Grove, Frenchtown Pond, and Milltown. Council Grove is the site of the signing of the Hellgate Treaty of 1855 between the US Government and the native tribes of NW Montana. Frenchtown Pond doesn't have much history, but is a nice site for a picnic and/or fishing, along with a pretty extensive playground. We didn't spend much time there. Milltown is the site of the historic Milltown dam that was dismantled and the entire area revamped after being a Superfund site. Join us as we explore these (for the most part) historic parks.

Floating the Smith River Montana (Shortened) - Family Rafting Adventure with Kids
After years of wanting to, we finally got our stuff together, teamed up with some friends and managed to draw a Smith River permit. The Smith River montana river rafting trips permit is one of the most sought after montana rafting trips and the only permitted river in Montana. Smith river rafting is not without it's tricks and tips though. Montana rivers are all open to the public, but floating the smith river requires special Fish Wildlife and Parks permit. The weather can be, uh, variable as we found out but it's an amazingly beautiful place, secluded and relaxing. Floating the smith river is a real treat if you get the chance. We ran into cold and rain and ended up pulling out early but the trip before us got a lot of warm sun and cloudless days.
The rafting is not particularly technical even in high water but you do need to be careful and aware of getting pushed into the walls on tight turns.

From WikiPedia:
Smith River is a tributary of the Missouri River, in central Montana, in the United States. It rises in southern Meagher County in the Castle Mountains and flows northwest in the valley between the Big Belt and Little Belt mountains, past White Sulphur Springs and past Smith River State Park. It turns north-northwest (NNW), and is joined by Hound Creek in Cascade County, and joins the Missouri approximately 9 miles (14 km) southwest of Great Falls.
The Smith is a Class I river from the Camp Baker Fishing Access site near Ft. Logan to its confluence with the Missouri River for public access for recreational purposes.
Noted for its spectacular scenery and blue-ribbon trout fishery, the Smith River is unique in that it has only one public put-in and one public take-out for the entire 59-mile (95 km) segment of river. Boat camps located along the remote river canyon help preserve the unique quality of this area. The Smith River between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge is the only river corridor managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks as a permitted river. Permits for private floats on the Smith River are allocated to the public via a lottery system prior to the spring season. Permit applications are typically available the first week of January each year, with an application deadline of mid-February.
Areas near the Smith River are currently under review as nearby Meagher County and state agencies investigate construction of the Black Butte Copper Project.

Staying in Anaconda, Montana - THE BUS STORY Episode 91
We just spent 6 weeks exploring around the small, centrally located town of Anaconda, Montana. We visited historical state parks and celebrated our children's birthdays and even managed to prepare for something big we have coming up.
While we've had such a great time, it's finally time to hit the road again.
But unfortunately, things didn't quite go as planned.

4K City Walks: Butte, Montana Virtual Treadmill Walking Tour No. 2
Had a job in Butte, Montana and I was able to get a couple walks in. This 2nd one is from Montana Tech to uptown Butte, where most of the old buildings are located. Butte has fallen on hard times the last couple of decades but was once known as the Richest Hill on Earth for its copper mines and the fortunes it made. It still has it's 19th Century charm even if some of the paint has chipped. Butte residents are a tough lot though and they still have many events and activities throughout the year. Give yourself a treat if you are near the junction of I-90 and i-15. It's definitely worth a stop.
From Wikipedia:
Butte is the county seat of Silver Bow County, Montana, United States. In 1977, the city and county governments consolidated to form the sole entity of Butte-Silver Bow. The city covers 718 square miles (1,860 km2), and, according to the 2010 census, has a population of 33,503, making it Montana's fifth largest city. It is served by Bert Mooney Airport with airport code BTM.
Established in 1864 as a mining camp in the northern Rocky Mountains on the Continental Divide, Butte experienced rapid development in the late-nineteenth century, and was Montana's first major industrial city. In its heyday between the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, it was one of the largest copper boomtowns in the American West. Employment opportunities in the mines attracted surges of Asian and European immigrants, particularly the Irish; as of 2017, Butte has the largest population of Irish Americans per capita of any city in the United States.
Over the course of its history, Butte's mining and smelting operations generated an excess of $48 billion worth of ore, but also resulted in numerous environmental implications for the city: The upper Clark Fork River, with headwaters at Butte, is the largest Superfund site in the United States, and the city is also home to the Berkeley Pit. In the late-twentieth century, cleanup efforts from the EPA were instated, and the Butte Citizens Technical Environmental Committee was established in 1984. In the 21st century, efforts at interpreting and preserving Butte's heritage are addressing both the town's historical significance and the continuing importance of mining to its economy and culture. The city's Uptown Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States, containing nearly 6,000 contributing properties. The city is also home to Montana Tech, a public engineering and technical university.
Prior to Butte's formal establishment in 1864, the area consisted of a mining camp that had developed in the early 1860s. The city is located in the Silver Bow Creek Valley (or Summit Valley), a natural bowl sitting high in the Rockies straddling the Continental Divide, positioned on the southwestern side of a large mass of granite known as the Boulder Batholith, which dates to the Cretaceous era. In 1864, William L. Farlin founded the Asteroid Mine (subsequently known as the Travona); Farlin's founding of the Asteroid Mine attracted a significant number of prospectors seeking gold and silver. The mines attracted workers from Cornwall Ireland & Wales, Lebanon, Canada, Finland, Austria, Italy, China, Montenegro, Mexico, and more. In the ethnic neighborhoods, young men formed gangs to protect their territory and socialize into adult life, including the Irish of Dublin Gulch, the Eastern Europeans of the McQueen Addition, and the Italians of Meaderville.
The influx of miners gave Butte a reputation as a wide-open town where any vice was obtainable. The city's saloon and red-light district, called the Line or The Copper Block, was centered on Mercury Street, where the elegant bordellos included the famous Dumas Brothel. Behind the brothel was the equally famous Venus Alley, where women plied their trade in small cubicles called cribs. The red-light district brought miners and other men from all over the region and remained open until 1982 after the closure of the Dumas Brothel; the city's red-light was one of the last such urban districts in the United States. Commercial breweries first opened in Butte in the 1870s, and were a large staple of the city's early economy; they were usually run by German immigrants, including Leopold Schmidt, Henry Mueller, and Henry Muntzer. The breweries were always staffed by union workers. Most ethnic groups in Butte, from Germans and Irish to Italians and various Eastern Europeans, including children, enjoyed the locally brewed lagers, bocks, and other types of beer
