The Falstaff in Canterbury, Canterbury, United Kingdom - Awesome!
The Falstaff in Canterbury - Exclusive price! -
One of our top picks in Canterbury. Just meters from Canterbury’s medieval West Gate, this charming building dates back to 1403. The former coaching inn now offers free WiFi and free parking for hotel residents. All just 2 minutes walk from the city center.
The Falstaff still retains many original features, including oak beams and an open log fire. Each room has a TV for guests to use and facilities for making tea and coffee. Ironing facilities are available free of charge on request.
The hotel offers a cooked full English breakfast combined with continental self-service buffet. The cocktail bars offers a range of wines, including those from the vineyards of Kent and East Sussex.
Canterbury West Rail Station is a 3 minute walk from the building. The city’s spectacular Norman cathedral can be reached in less than 10 minutes on foot.
Removing the Welcoming Christ from Christchurch Gate
On 17 January 2020, Artful Logistics helped to remove the Welcoming Christ from Canterbury Cathedral's Christchurch Gate. The statue will be placed in storage and undergo some mild conservation work whilst work is carried out on the gate as part of The Canterbury Journey. The statue is due to return at the end of The Canterbury Journey. Visit our website for further details.
The Big Move - Canterbury Christ Church Gate
The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral are proud to sponsor the conservation and renovation of the carved wooden gates in the Christ Church Gatehouse which date from 1661. On 11 October 2011, the large doors were taken off their hinges for treatment.
The work has been decided following a detailed survey of the wooden gates using the latest technology of laser surveying which permits the production of three dimensional drawings to aid carving. The three gates, the two main entrance gates - one with a night gate, and a pedestrian gate have been temporarily removed and maintained in a similar environment whilst missing wood work, carved detail and iron fixing pins are replicated and fixed to the doors. The doors will then be re-oiled to enliven the wood work. The work will also include a full report on the archaeology of the gates.
This project is the start of a bigger project to refurbish the whole gate and further work will be required to the carved masonry in the near future.

Canterbury, a cathedral city in southeast England, was a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Ancient walls, originally built by the Romans, encircle its medieval centre with cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. Canterbury Cathedral, founded 597 A.D., is the headquarters of the Church of England and Anglican Communion, incorporating Gothic and Romanesque elements in its stone carvings and stained-glass windows.
Canterbury is a historic English cathedral city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which lies at the heart of the City of Canterbury, a local government district of Kent, England. Canterbury lies on the River Stour.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the primate of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion owing to the importance of St Augustine, who served as the apostle to the pagan Kingdom of Kent around the turn of the 7th century. The city's cathedral became a major focus of pilgrimage following the 1170 martyrdom of Thomas Becket, although it had already been a well-trodden pilgrim destination since the murder of St Alphege by the men of King Canute in 1012. A journey of pilgrims to Becket's shrine served as the frame for Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th century classic The Canterbury Tales.
Canterbury is a popular tourist destination: consistently one of the most-visited cities in the United Kingdom, the city's economy is heavily reliant upon tourism. The city has been occupied since Paleolithic times and served as the capital of the Celtic Cantiaci and Jute Kingdom of Kent. Many historical structures fill the area, including a city wall founded in Roman times and rebuilt in the 14th century, the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and a Norman castle, and the oldest extant school in the world, the King's School. Modern additions include the Marlowe Theatre and the St Lawrence Ground, home of the Kent County Cricket Club. There is also a substantial student population, brought about by the presence of the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, the University for the Creative Arts, and the Girne American University Canterbury campus. Canterbury remains, however, a small city in terms of geographical size and population, when compared with other British cities.

Celebrating success: Yeside's story – Canterbury Christ Church University
Yeside Fawehinmi recently graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University with a 2:1 in Multimedia Journalism and since graduating, she has chosen to continue her studies and is working towards a Masters in International Relations. In this video, Yeside explains why Black History Month is not only important to her but why it is important to everyone and she shares her why Michelle Obama is her biggest inspiration.
We filmed Yeside, together with other previous and current Canterbury Christ Church University students, to celebrate the successes of BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) Christ Church students, for our Black History Month October 2019 exhibition ‘Follow their Lead’. When we asked previous and current Christ Church students what they thought of Black History Month, they expressed mixed views. Most thought it was a shame the month needed to exist at all, but as it does, that it is important we use it to positive ends. The exhibition starts at Augustine House, Canterbury, and will travel to various locations across the University throughout the year.
