NAIROBI CITY PARK (Part-1) 6.11.2016
Nairobi City Park
Established in 1921 on an area of 225 acres, City Park Nairobi is situated in the Parklands area of Nairobi across Nairobi River in the north of city, about 4 km from city center. The land grabbers encroached upon big chunk of land over the years. Finally Government declared the remaining 150 acres of Nairobi City Park a protected area in 2009. It is a beautiful park having rich biodiversity with nearly one thousand species of flora and fauna. On weekends and national holidays the park becomes very lively where hundreds of families come for picnic and bring lot of food to share with monkeys lurking around. There are lot of nature trails for nature lovers, but usually these are not considered safe for foreign tourists. Entry to the Park is free.
There is a small graveyard in the park where famous persons of Nairobi are buried. Another landmark ‘Murumbi Peace Memorial Park’ is located just adjacent to the public cemetery where Joseph Murumbi, Kenya’s second vice President and his wife Sheila were buried. The couple had great love for Kenyan art and culture which inspired the creation of the Murumbi Memorial Park.
Another highlight of the City Park is the City Park Market of vegetables and fruits located in one corner of the Park near Lumuru Road. This is a typical vegetable market of a third world country, not well organized, very cheap and lively. It is also a cultural place. The South Asian people and Sikhs with their colorful turbans are seen in abundance here.

After years of civic engagement and protection of the Nairobi City Park, Friends of City Park, working alongside the Nairobi City County government, and the National Museums of Kenya, have dealt with and experienced a number of issues specifically facing City Park that need to be addressed for the continued health and viability of the park. Here is a short film showing the park and the challenges it faces to keep it safe and secure to the public.

City park shooting incident survivor says his life is in danger
Bernard Chege, a survivor of the shooting incident at City Park two weeks ago that claimed Janet Waiyaki's life, now says his life is in danger saying he needs police protection, claiming police have been harassing him in hospital.
Chege claims police treated him as a suspect, under the guise of investigating the shooting at city park, where 41-year-old Janet Waiyaki was killed.
