International Students -- Welcome to the College of Charleston
Contact us: international@cofc.edu
At the College of Charleston, we feel strongly that diverse backgrounds, perspectives and experiences are integral parts of a liberal arts education. We attract international students from all over the world and offer a lively mix of cultural exchange both in and out of the classroom. You'll study in the heart of one of the most historic cities in the United States, and one that — because it is located in a major East Coast seaport — has a decidedly European and cosmopolitan feel.
International students follow the same application process as domestic students, with a few additional requirements. In this section you'll find information on what you need to submit with your application. Be sure to plan ahead for our admissions deadlines. If you've taken classes at post-secondary institutions abroad or your secondary education included a 13th year, there is a process for having your coursework considered for transfer credit at the College of Charleston. Credit is awarded for exams such as Cambridge A Level, IB, and AP.
Once you have been accepted and have confirmed your enrollment, our Center for International Education will issue a Form I-20 so that you can apply for a U.S. student visa. You will find information about U.S. immigration policies at the International Student Resource Center website. In addition, the English Language Institute is designed to enhance your English language skills needed in academic, professional and social settings.
Charleston, South Carolina, United States, North America
Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, the county seat of Charleston County, and the principal city in the Charleston–North Charleston–Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies just south of the geographical midpoint of South Carolina's coastline and is located on Charleston Harbor, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean formed by the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, or, as is locally expressed, where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers come together to form the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1670 as Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England, Charleston adopted its present name in 1783. It moved to its present location on Oyster Point in 1680 from a location on the west bank of the Ashley River known as Albemarle Point. By 1690, Charles Town was the fifth-largest city in North America, and it remained among the 10 largest cities in the United States through the 1840 census. With a 2010 census population of 120,083 (and a 2014 estimate of 130,113), current trends put Charleston as the fastest-growing municipality in South Carolina. The population of the Charleston metropolitan area, comprising Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties, was counted by the 2014 estimate at 727,689 – the third-largest in the state – and the 78th-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States. Known for its rich history, well-preserved architecture, distinguished restaurants, and mannerly people, Charleston has received a large number of accolades, including America's Most Friendly by Travel + Leisure in 2011 and in 2013 and 2014 by Condé Nast Traveler, and also the most polite and hospitable city in America by Southern Living magazine. The city proper consists of six distinct areas: the Peninsula/Downtown, West Ashley, Johns Island, James Island, Daniel Island, and the Cainhoy Peninsula. Charleston is a major tourist destination, with a considerable number of luxury hotels, hotel chains, inns, and bed and breakfasts, and a large number of award-winning restaurants and quality shopping. The city has two shipping terminals, owned and operated by the South Carolina Ports Authority, which are part of the fourth-largest container seaport on the East Coast and the thirteenth largest container seaport in North America. Charleston is becoming a prime location for information technology jobs and corporations, and has experienced the highest growth in this sector between 2011 and 2012 due in large part to the Charleston Digital Corridor. In 2013, the Milken Institute ranked the Charleston region the ninth-best performing economy in the US due in large part to the growing IT sector. Notable companies include Blackbaud, SPARC, BoomTown, CSS, and Benefitfocus. Higher education is also an important sector in the local economy, with institutions such as the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Charleston, The Citadel, and Charleston School of Law. In addition, Charleston Southern University is located in nearby North Charleston. Charleston is also an important art destination, named a top-25 arts destination by AmericanStyle magazine. Charleston also has some of the higher home prices in the country with an average home price of $420,000.

Public Health Program Implements Farm-to-School Initiative -- College of Charleston
The 2012-13 academic year is the pilot for the farm-to-school program at Mitchell Elementary School in downtown Charleston and Hunley Park Elementary School in North Charleston. The initiative is funded by a $120,000 charitable investment from Boeing.
College of Charleston researchers are working on a new project that will help boost the local economy as well as improve the school nutrition environment and child health outcomes.
Health and Human Performance assistant professor Dr. Olivia M. Thompson of the College of Charleston's new Public Health program has assembled a team of College of Charleston researchers along with national, state, and local public health innovators to design a sustainable and scalable program.
The goal of the farm-to-school initiative is to increase the availability of and access to healthful, local foods as well as to stimulate the local economy, says Thompson. Buying and eating local foods builds a strong local economy and preserves personal and community health. Farm-to-school programs create a market for area farmers and make it possible for children to have consistent access to nutrient-packed foods such as locally grown fruits and vegetables.
In addition to Charleston County School District partners, local project leadership is provided by the Green Heart Project and Lowcountry Local First. The Green Heart Project, a community volunteer organization underwritten by local restaurant Taco Boy, is committed to teaching children math and science concepts along with character building through hands-on learning experiences. The organization has an urban garden at Mitchell Elementary School that will be expanded in both scope and size with support from the farm-to-school initiative. Green Heart Project program director Drew Harrison, states that they are elated at the opportunity to collaborate with the College of Charleston team in developing and implementing the larger farm-to-school initiative.
Lowcountry Local First, a non-profit organization committed to increasing both the supply and demand of local foods, will work with the College of Charleston team to increase the number of Lowcountry farmers eligible for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification, a milestone achievement that will enable farmers to sell their products to third-party organizations such as schools. Lowcountry Local First sustainable agricultural director Ms. Nikki Seibert adds that to meet the increased demand for local foods, the Lowcountry must build a strong local food system that provides tools, resources, and trainings to ensure local farmers are able to easily connect with a variety of markets to sell their products.
Lessons learned from the pilot farm-to-school initiative's evaluation will be used in conjunction with those from other South Carolina-based initiatives to guide the development, implementation, and evaluation of future programs.
