Corn Market Street - Oxford, UK
Observing our surroundings after church on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Oxford. This is right next to the oldest structure in Oxford and my favorite AMT coffee stand.

Closely observing the magic of Cornmarket Street, Oxford, England for a few minutes !
I took this one and a half minute video clip on 21 June 2010 when I visited Oxford again after a gap of 7 years. Cornmarket Street (often called just Cornmarket by Oxonians) is a major shopping street and pedestrian precinct in Oxford, England that leads north from Carfax Tower towards St Giles'.To the east is the small Golden Cross arcade of small jewellery and craft shops in a historic courtyard, leading to the Covered Market. To the west is the indoor Clarendon Shopping Centre that connects in an L-shape to Queen Street.Cornmarket was pedestrianised in 1999. This tranquil city, my favourite in the whole world alongwith Calicut in Kerala, India (where I am based these days) is where the oldest and the most famous university of the English speaking world is situated. Just to sit and watch life unfolding around you, anywhere in this beautiful city itself is an awesome experience. Hope you all enjoy this small clip!

【英國】牛津市中心 室內市場 | Covered Market, Oxford, UK

A walk on Cornmarket Oxford
Cornmarket Street, or just Cornmarket as we locals call it, used to be Oxford's main shopping street. With the arrival of the Westgate Centre, Oxford's October 2017 shopping mall, Cornmarket is no longer the premier shopping experience.
However that doesn't mean decline. At the very start of the walk on the left the building is being converted by its owner Jesus College, my alma mater.
I quote from the architects, MICA:
The new development is a mixed-use development with retail, academic facilities and accommodation on the second floor upward.
It compromises a new Quad for the college, improved retail facilities activating the frontage and new external spaces.
The project is also a catalyst for the improvement of Market Street. Northgate House will allow the College to:
accommodate increased student numbers resulting from its introduction of Computer Science and an expansion of postgraduate places;
deliver improved space for students and staff;
and provide more access to the work of the College.
It will include an innovative Digital Hub designed to promote interdisciplinary research and knowledge exchange.
Oxford High Street
Oxford is a city in central southern England, the home of the University of Oxford. The city is the county town of Oxfordshire, and forms a district within the county. It has a population of just under 165,000, of whom 153,900 live within the district boundary. It lies about 50 miles (80 km) north-west of London. The rivers Cherwell and Thames (also sometimes known as the Isis locally) run through Oxford and meet south of the city centre.
Oxford has a diverse economic base. Its industries include motor manufacturing, publishing and a large number of information technology and science-based businesses.
Buildings in Oxford demonstrate an example of every English architectural period since the arrival of the Saxons, including the iconic, mid-18th century Radcliffe Camera. Oxford is known as the city of dreaming spires, a term coined by poet Matthew Arnold in reference to the harmonious architecture of Oxford's university buildings. The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
Oxford Covered Market
The Covered Market is a historic market with permanent stalls and shops in a large covered structure in central Oxford, England.The market is located to the north of the High Street towards the western end between Cornmarket Street and Turl Street. To the north is Market Street. Most of the entrances are from the High Street and Market Street (with four entrances from each street). It is also possible to gain access from Cornmarket via the Golden Cross alley, with its small up-market shops.
The Covered Market was officially opened on 1 November 1774 and is still active today. It was started in response to a general wish to clear 'untidy, messy and unsavoury stalls' from the main streets of central Oxford.
John Gwynn, the architect of Magdalen Bridge, drew up the plans and designed the High Street front with its four entrances. In 1772, the newly formed Market committee, half of whose members came from the town and half from the university, accepted an estimate of nine hundred and sixteen pounds ten shillings, for the building of twenty butchers' shops.
Twenty more soon followed, and after 1773 meat was allowed to be sold only inside the market. From this nucleus the market grew, with stalls for garden produce, pig meat, dairy products and fish.
Today the covered market is still home to numerous traders, around half of which are food retailers, including traditional market shops selling fresh food such as greengrocers and butchers (including some who produce the distinctive, local Oxford sausage). There are also newer gift shops, bakeries and sandwich shops. Most of the shops now are quite a bit larger than the original stall sizes, and so the number of businesses in the covered market is smaller than in the past. It is a bustling area, especially on Saturdays.
In 2017, Oxford City Council, which owns the Covered Market, announced a £1.6m investment in the fabric of the building, including roof repairs, improved public conveniences, external paving and new signage.
In May 2017, the Covered Market received 'the Royal seal of approval' when it was visited by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

FlashMob - Oxford - Cornmarket Street (Dec 3 2006)
FlashMob that took place in front of the Clarendon Center, Cornmarket Street, Oxford on the 3rd December 2006. This particular FlashMob was a pillow fight. It kicked off at exactly 1pm and lasted 1 minute. A lot of people were asking me what was about to happen! The track, for those of you that have asked, is It Ain't Gonna Be Me - Interference Mix by CJ Bolland.
