Gold Stamper Battery Hidden in Bush
Rediscovering a fogotten Stamper Battery used for pounding raw ore to dust then further proccessed to extract gold by early Chinese miners around 1875 ,Neavesville , Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. This was my second attempt to find this remote and overgrown stamper battery about 3 hours walk up hill and through bush to get to it. I found this interesting artical about it:
I returned to Neavesville, somewhat disillusioned, and once more joined the small community. There was much evidence of the past mining activity at Neavesville, there was one battery standing complete in Neavesville, the story being that after being erected, the big suction gas engine which was to drive the battery would not operate at the high altitude (some 2,500 feet). There were ten head of stamps, hopper and jaw crusher, berdans, and Wilfrey [Wilfley -- E] table, all set up, but had never crushed a single ton of rock. There was plenty of evidence that our predecessors had intended to work the battery, as they had cut and stacked many cords of mountain rata, a wood that had been in plentiful supply. A mixture of firewood, with a small amount of anthracite coal and coke was evidently the fuel necessary to run the plant.

Coromandel Gold..Komata Reefs..
Gold was discovered at Komata Reefs in 1891 and had quite a long history.
We (Maratoto Exploration) started our walk at the end of Komata Reefs road and worked our way up the old track past level 5 (collapsed) onto Level 4 and 4a then climbed a gully, entered Levels 3 and 2 then up to level one (Smithy's level) and just a short walk up to main level with boiler..
A link to the gold mining history of the Komata.

Should New Zealand mine the Coromandel?
Conservation land is for conservation! Yes?
We are calling for no more future mining on conservation land in NZ!
The long term detrimental and widespread impacts of the mining industry will undermine the environment, culture and economy of this special part of Aotearoa.

GOLDEN POINT STAMPER BATTERY RUNS AGAIN.mp4
The Golden Point stamper battery in New Zealand's south island is the only battery where the stamps still work in their original location, driven by the original source of power. The 100-plus years old Tangye type AA oil engine is fired up for a special run, watched by visitors from a modern mine nearby and by pupils from a local school. But the purpose of the run is really diagnostic: Department of Conservation staff want to assess the condition of the engine and the stamps to decide on possible restoration work. Meanwhile, the run is spectacular, both visually and aurally !

City Description:
Coromandel is a coastal town on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand's North Island. It's known for the Driving Creek Railway, a narrow-gauge train ride through mountain forests, past pottery sculptures. Powered by a huge waterwheel, the 1900s Coromandel Gold Stamper Battery still processes gold from rock. The town's gold mining history is chronicled at the Coromandel School of Mines and Historical Museum.rrrrrrrrrnFrom Coromandel Harbour, the Kauri Block Track leads up to an old Maori pa (fortress), with views over the town and offshore islands. The 309 Road runs south from town, past bushland and local farms. Along the road, the Chiltern Scenic Reserve offers trails and a picnic area. Farther south, the Waiau Falls pour over a rock face surrounded by dense vegetation. Nearby, a boardwalk leads into Kauri Grove, a cluster of huge native trees. Long Bay Beach is a popular spot for camping and swimming, and boats launch from Wyuna Bay.
Weather and Events:
Oct–Apr is a common time to visit Coromandel, when the weather is typically mild and comfortable. Days can be warm during the height of summer (Jan–Feb). Winter (Jun–Aug) is cool, with some chilly lows. Rain is possible year-round. Illume: Coromandel Winter Festival of Light (Jun/Jul) sees the town’s main street lit up in a colourful display, with live music, art displays and street food.

Broken Hills (Coromandel, New Zealand) Recreation Area - Collins Drive Tunnel
The 500-m long Collins Drive provides an opportunity to experience a real underground mine system. This tunnel was driven through the hill in a fruitless attempt to find a quartz reef with payable ore. Dangerous shafts have been boarded up. You will need a torch for the 15-min boardwalk through the tunnel. Turn your torch off near the tunnel entrances to see the glow-worms.
The easiest approach to Collins Drive is via the Third Branch Track (Puketui Road) or Water Race Tunnels Track (Puketui Valley Road). A small landing 5 min short of Collins Drive marks the start of an aerial cableway that carried ore hoppers to the Golden Hills stamper battery. From the west end of Collins Drive, a 10-min climb to the ridge will bring you to the Main Range track. Turn to the east (right) and you will return to the Puketui Valley road end car park, approximately 1 hr away. Check out the views from the lookout on the way.

Nestled beside the slow-moving Tairua River, Broken Hills is a tranquil holiday hideaway in a picturesque setting. Around the turn of the 20th century, a bustling gold-mining settlement named Puketui was established in the Broken Hills Gorge. It had a post office, hall and several shops.
By 1912 a settlement of 200 people had sprung up along the river. Plans were prepared for a permanent township on the site now occupied by the Broken Hills Campsite. Just 2 years later, production at the mines tailed off and the size of the settlement diminished accordingly. Small-scale mining continued in the area until 1923. Relics of this past mining era can still be seen. Today, one of the old drives is being mined using historic methods.
This beautiful gorge now provides many opportunities for walking, swimming, canoeing, trout fishing, fossicking, rafting, bird watching, photography, picnicking and camping.

Kauri 2000 Trust final You Tube
While a school group plants seedlings, the founder of the Kauri 2000 Trust talks about how it all started. The Trust operates on the Coromandel Peninsular in New Zealand's North Island. It organises volunteers to plant seedlings of the magnificent kauri tree, the second largest tree in the world. Over 12 years or so, the trust has planted over 30,000 seedlings on protected public land. The objective is to replace something of the kauri forests decimated by logging over two centuries.

WAIORONGOMAI HELICOPTER LIFT WINDING GEAR TO BUTLER'S INCLINE
A giant Russian-built Mil 8 helicopter is needed to lift a 4 tonne replica of the wooden framing for the winding gear at the top of Butler's Incline. Butler's is one of three linked inclines that served gold mines on the slopes of Mount Te Aroha in New Zealand's north island. Once the frame was in place, the original winding gear itself was lifted on top of it - not without some moments of drama !
