Historic village of River near Dover Kent. The Village of River sits in a valley through which the River Dour flows. This stretch of river powered a series of watermills over the years. These were both paper and corn mills. The only remaining working mill now is Crabble Corn Mill which dates from 1812. It has recently been restored and is open to the public. It is operated and maintained by The Crabble Corn Mill Trust.
Another leisure facility is Kearsney Abbey. This is an extensive park and gardens. The River Dour runs through the park and widens into large lakes which are abundant with swans, ducks and other water fowl. In the grounds are the remains of the mansion that gave the park it's name. It is in these remains that the abbey tea rooms are situated.

Mennock Corn Mill Ruins A Visual Survey & History

A long abandoned water powered corn mill on the Mennock Water near Sanquhar in Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway. Built in the early 19th century, replacing a mill that stood on the Mennock Water on the Mennock Pass. A ford crossed here and the Loch Burn joined the Mennock Water.

The mill looks to have used for another purpose after it ceased grinding corn. No wheel or any other mill machinery survives in situ. A saw pit was located here. The wheel seems to have been in a wheel house and a possible kiln converted into a cottage stood above. The building was once 'L' shaped and shows since of multiple alterations.

Urbex ~ Hedgecourt Mill Ruins & Lake

The original watermill was built on this site about 1570, the mill was replaced in the 18th century upon the original foundations. In 1856 it was described as being brick and tiled, worked by an 11 ft overshot wheel, driving 2 pairs of stones. It ceased use in about 1920 and was demolished to ground level in the 1950’s.
The southern end of the mill cottages date to the late 1500’s being a two-bay floored house with mullion windows. The house has been extended greatly providing housing for the miller of Hedgecourt water and wind mills. The longest resident millers were the Marchant family 1670-1773. The property has now been combined to form one dwelling.

1926 Hedgecourt Mill Sketch
Originally built in 1567 by Jack Dancey of Turners Hill when the lake was flooded. This drawing is of the 17th Century building upon the old foundations. The corn mill was in use up until about 1911, after which it fell into disrepair. It was finally deemed as a dangerous structure in 1949 and demolished leaving only the mill wheel to rot away in the race.

From an interesting and well-executed collection of wartime pen & ink drawings by Frank Fort, a few heightened with colour, depicting topographical views, buildings and windmills. Locations include scenes in Surrey, Berkshire & Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and other areas in the South of England dated between 1932 and 1947.

Biographical history H E S Simmons (1901-1973) was from Sussex and worked at the Ministry of Defence. He toured Britain extensively from the 1930s onwards, photographing and recording mills. His aim was to put in writing everything to do with mills in the British Isles, and he amassed a vast collection of material. He produced and sold postcards of his mill photos.

Dover Castle seen from Castle Street.Dover's name originated with its river -- the River Dour, deriving from the Brythonic Dubrās (the waters), via its Latinized form of Dubris. The cliffs also gave Britain its ancient name of Albion (white). The Romans called it ''Porte Dubris''; the modern name was in use at least by the time Shakespeare wrote 'King Lear' (between 1603 and 1606), in which the town and its cliffs play a prominent role.

Dover's history, because of its proximity to France, has always been of great strategic importance to Britain. Archaeological finds have shown that there were Stone Age people in the area; and that by the Bronze Age the maritime influence was already strong. Some Iron Age finds exist also, but the coming of the Romans made Dover part of their communications network. Like Lemanis (Lympne) and Rutupiae (Richborough) Dover was connected by road to Canterbury and Watling Street; and it became Portus Dubris, a fortified port. Forts were built above the port; lighthouses were constructed to guide ships; and one of the best-preserved Roman villas in Britain is here.

Dover figured largely in the Domesday Book as an important borough. It also served as a bastion against various attackers: notably the French during the Napoleonic Wars; and against Germany during World War II.
