Destin, Florida: A Vacation From Our RV Vacation on the Gulf of Mexico's Emerald Coast
This is the last stop on the Great American Road Trip travel vlog. We just relax for a couple of days at the Emerald Coast, frolicking in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, eat some fabulous seafood, and then drive all the way to Panama City. Here we wish we were traveling in a van because there are many place we would love to stop for a bite or just enjoy the surf.
From the blog:
We are reaching the home stretch, the end of our epic road trip. In this last installment, the idea is to take a vacation from our vacation and do something totally different. We are just going to relax in the white sand and warm waters of the Emerald Coast of Florida. This is located in the Florida panhandle, on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.
We are splurging in one of the most expensive and coveted RV Parks in the United States, Camp Gulf, in Destin Florida. Our two nights here will be a grand total of $445 for a beachfront site. Is it worth it? You can be the judge of that but I thoroughly enjoyed waking up a stone throw away from the water. Our time here is spent as follows: beach, beer, seafood, repeat.
Well there's a little more than that, and we did certain things line eating a freshly made Krispy Kreme, which didn't make it to the video. Why it didn't? Well I had my hands full of Krispy Kreme glaze goodness and didn't want to touch my phone.
As we begin our return trip to South Florida, we cruise along, hugging the coast all the way to Panama City. I the video you get treated to a mesmerizing time lapse as we pass by all the Gulf Coast communities. Eventually we get on the interstate and after a long, long drive we make it to the 305, the local pseudonym for Miami.

McGuire's Irish Pub, Destin Florida
McGuire's Irish Pup in Destin is one of the most popular eating destinations on the Emerald Coast. Located just right across the street from Harbor Walk Village and the Emerald Grande, McGuire's is very convenient and a must-do if you are visiting.
We decided to visit McGuire's after we received so many requests to check it out. Visiting McGuire's is always fun and is much more than just a dining experience. It is almost overwhelming when you try and explain everything to do and see at Mcguire's so we definitely recommend checking out the website!
We started the day by visiting Beasley Park on Oklaoosa Island on the way to Destin from Fort Walton Beach. It is hard to cross the island without at least stopping by the beach for a minute to take in the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico! Beasley Park is a good alternative to beach access if you are wanting to avoid the boardwalk or other beach locations where you may encounter a younger crowd.
It is a quick drive across the island and over the bridge to get to McGuire's. Once you arrive you may find parking a little hard to find and if it is tourist season you should give yourself plenty of time to find a parking spot. It may be necessary to find a parking spot a few minutes' walk away so keep that in mind. We recommend getting an Uber especially if you decide to take advantage of McGuire's assortment of locally brewed beer!
When you finally get parked and check in you may find yourself waiting for a table, however don’t let this discourage you. McGuire's has done a good job on providing plenty of things to do while you wait. There are plenty of tables outside where you can sit and enjoy a beverage from the outside bar. Or you may decide to check out the really cool gift shop located just right next door. They even offer pizza if you decide you just want something quick.
Once you finally get seated you will be greeted with friendly staff and live music. You can expect dim lights and lots of noise so be prepared for that. We found it very difficult to film and get our camera to focus due to the dim orangish light, however it really does create a cool environment.
No matter what you decide to get or when you decide to go, 4 things you must do is get the 18-cent senate bean soup, sign a dollar bill and put it on the wall, and kiss the moose for good luck! Also pay special attention when going to the restroom!
Below are some recommend websites also if you have time check out some of the other videos we have made here around Destin!

AJ's Seafood and Oyster Bar, Destin, Florida
Hey everyone! If this is your first time stopping by the channel please consider subscribing, we love making new friends and growing the family!
Second, sorry it has been a little bit since the last video, real life keeps getting in the way but I was finally able to break away and spend the day at AJ's Seafood and Oyster Bar and what an awesome day it was!
There is so much to do and see at AJ's you can virtually spend the entire day checking it out. Sundays are our favorite day to go because of the seafood boil. It is amazing and we really regretted not getting it for the video, however they start serving it at 1 pm and we were there too early (maybe a good topic for another video soon!?)
It would be super hard for me to try and describe everything there is to do at AJ's and you would get super tired of reading it all but the hightlights would include, in addition to the seafood boils...
The amazing view! From the elevated deck, AJ's offers one of the best views of the harbor, Destin Pass, the Gulf and fishing fleet. That alone is worth the visit.
The boats! AJ's has its own fleet of charter boats that take guests out on Dolphin curses, snorkeling trips, Sunset cruises and even adventures on their very own speed boats, The Sea Blaster or Sea Quest. Pretty cool!
The Tiki Village! At the base of AJ's is an awesome outdoor seating area which offers a fully stocked bar, a jumbotrom playing the seasonal sporting events, an ice cream shop along with an amazing water front view of the Destin fishing fleet.
Also, if you are here during the month of October, AJ's hosts the Destin Fishing Rodeo which is an amazing event! You don't even have to fish to have fun! Just grab a beer, find a seat and watch all the fisherman bring in their trophy fish! Always a good time!
There is much much more to do and we highly recommend checking out their website linked below if you're interested in knowing more.
As far as ranking this place goes, I'm not even going to, just consider this a perfect score. If your on the fence about it go ahead and go! But before you do, do a quick search for a coupon, you can find an AJ's coupon virtually anywhere! (HINT!!! check for a pamphlet at your local hotel or resort, look for a booklet called The Menu Mag, lots of discounts in there!

Destin Florida AirBnB Nightmare!
Destin Florida AirBnB Nightmare! - My Tour Tales
(New Orleans to Destin, AirBNB Nightmare)
I ate a little breakfast supplied by Fred from Mickie D’s then headed towards Destin. Fred and Karen are sick great hosts, I love staying there. I hated to leave. As soon as I got to I-10 the sky’s opened up. I forgot how hard it rains in the Southeast! I had to slow down to 40mph for quite a long time.
I stopped in Mississippi because I saw a sign for a Whataburger and I needed fuel anyway. Whataburger is a Texas tradition and now that they are all over the south, I try and stop whenever I get a craving.it hit the spot.
As I got into Destin, it was apparent that it was high season. The traffic on Hwy 98 was backed up from the Destin/Crab Island Bridge half way to Okaloosa Island! I took it in stride though because I was home and back at the beach. As I drove over the bridge I could see how packed the island was. It’s really not an island anymore. It was above the water before Hurricane Eloise in 1974, now it’s knee to waist deep. People stand in the water all day and drink beer and for some reason, never have to pee!
Destin has transformed from a sleepy little fishing village to world class tourist destination, with that comes pros and cons. The pros are, there will be a ton of work for me as a musician when I move back, the cons are traffic, too many people and high hotel prices when visiting in high season. I couldn’t find anything under $250! So I opted to try AirBNB.
The picture and reviews on the website looked promising. The problem is I didn’t look deep enough. While the host was very nice, they were way over their head and should not be renting. I say that because of many reasons. Deep breath...Here goes:
When I arrived the directions were hard to understand, took me 1/2 and hour to find the right building, the bathroom is in the living room, it had no towel, there is no separate entrance so she met me at the front door and showed me to my room. Room? It was a loft above the living room with a dangerously steep ladder to climb. She and her kids were sprawled our on the two couches below the loft. The TV was blaring kids shows. When I climbed ya to my dungeon, it was mattress on the floor, no nightstand like in the photos, clutter in the cubby hole and a tiny TV no one could see. The sheets and pillows didn’t match. The room was barren. Just a mattress on the floor. I’m not picky but come on! The kids slept all night on the couch with the TV on all night. I managed to fall asleep at midnight and then at 5:45 the kids started crying and the The was cranked to full volume I think. I tried to get back to sleep but to no success. I tossed and turned until 7:30 then let myself out as the two kids slept hard on the couch. I emailed her and explained its dangerous to keep your kids in a living room with perfect strangers sleeping above them. I mean really?! She thanked me for my input and refunded my fee. All good.

Florida Travel: The Famous McGuire's Irish Pub of Pensacola
McGuire’s Irish Pub first opened in 1977 as a small neighborhood pub in a shopping center. In 1982 McGuire’s moves to its current location; Pensacola’s original 1927 Old Firehouse. Inside the pub you’ll find a turn-of-the-century, New York Irish Saloon themed 615-seat restaurant.
Pensacola is a Year Round Destination
Pensacola, FL is, in our opinion, a super underrated town. There's so things to do than just Pensacola beach. Well, yes, the beaches are gorgeous along the Emerald Coast (we live near Destin, FL), Pensacola has a lot more to offer.
First, it is called the city of five flags because it has influence from Spain, Great Britain, France, the Confederate States, and of course, the U.S. How many other cities can claim to have been ruled by 5 flags?
Pensacola also has a pretty awesome main strip, Palafox Place, which has a certain charm to it, just like Bourbon Street, but not nearly as 'cray cray.' There are 4 breweries in Pensacola worth visiting - you'll see Pensacola Bay and Perfect Plain in the video.
I might have been most excited about our lodging: we stayed at this super awesome bed and breakfast (Pensacola Victorian Bed & Breakfast). You can book your stay with Booking.com (which will help us out a tiny bit as an affiliate) with this link:
The Pensacola lighthouse in the video is easily accessible as well - if you put it in your GPS, make sure the route isn't going to take you through the Naval Air Station (military base). You want to go in the west gate for civilian access.

2019 Market Review FL Panhandle including areas Between Destin and Panama City Beach
Nathan Abbott Team 2019 Mid Year Market review for the Florida Panhandle including areas Between Destin and Panama City Beach. I was fortunate to attend a meeting for the Economic and Housing Forecast for the Emerald Coast last week with guest speaker, Edsel Charles, founder and chairman of the MarketGraphics Research Group. Edsel is the foremost expert on real estate market statistics in the USA. Download the report here:
He was telling us how unique the real estate market was in the Florida Panhandle in that while we are fed national statistics in the news which are not a good indicator in our local market. Based upon this presentation, the Florida Panhandle is one of the fastest growing areas in the country for residential grown and vacation rentals. Edsel stated that if new home construction stopped today, we would run out of inventory within 9 weeks.
More people are moving here and we are growing as a top vacation destination.
With so many visitors to our area, it’s easy to consider that other aspects of our local economies have seen increases as well, such as home sales and prices. In fact, throughout Northwest Florida the demand for housing has been strong.
For example, in the greater Panama City area homes sales for the first six months of 2019 were up 15.5% year over year. That represents sales of more than 2,000 homes from January through June. And, not only has there been an increase in overall sales numbers, but the average median sales price for a home in the area is up 1.1% over the same period last year. Of course, much of this demand is a result of Hurricane Michael with both current residents seeking out homes because theirs’ was heavily damaged, or investors purchasing distressed properties to rehab and turn a profit.
