Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge
The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge lies in the heart of California’s Silicon Valley — a 30,000-acre oasis for millions of migratory birds and endangered species. Neighboring Google and Facebook, the stunning wetlands and waterways of the refuge provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the booming tech industry, and allow residents of the surrounding communities to fish, hike, explore, and view wildlife. The refuge is currently spearheading a major wetlands restoration project and groundbreaking programs to mitigate rising water levels and flood risk due to climate change. In addition, a local Habitat Heroes program brings refuge staff together with teens in the community to foster environmental awareness and groom future environmental stewards.

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Fremont CA
The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge is an expansive, 30,000 acre refuge for millions of wildlife native to and around the San Francisco bay area. The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge was first established in 1972 and is the first urban national wildlife refuge.
The refuge is designed to provide an oasis in an urban landscape for millions of endangered species and migratory birds, who find themselves increasingly without natural habitats that once covered the landscape of Fran Francisco Bay. It is estimated that about 8% of the original marshes and shorelines of San Francisco Bay were altered during the 19th and 20th centuries, resulting in a massive decline in natural habitat for countless species and millions of animals. The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge seeks to provide relief to these animals in order to protect endangered species, increase the wildlife habitat in the area and help people study the wildlife and ecosystem native to the area.

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge (Newark, California)
Exploring the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Newark, CA!
In the heart of California's high-tech industry lies a 30,000-acre oasis for millions of migratory birds and endangered species. The nation's first urban national wildlife refuge sits on the southern end of San Francisco Bay. The refuge, created in 1974, was largely the result of grassroots efforts by the local community to protect the San Francisco Bay ecosystem.
Major changes occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area following the California gold rush in 1849, creating a population boom explosive growth and development on sensitive lands surrounding the bay. The newly introduced salt industry, for example, converted tens of thousands of acres of salt marsh into commercial salt ponds. Conversion of wetlands to support development continued well into the 20th century, and today, nearly 85% of the bay's original marshes and shorelines have been altered.
Congressman Don Edwards, responding to local citizens who made up the South San Francisco Baylands Planning, Conservation and National Wildlife Refuge Committee, worked with Congress to create the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This group later became the Citizens Committee to Complete the Refuge and in 1988 helped add additional 20,000 acres, doubling the size of the refuge. The Citizens Committee to Complete the Refuge along with other Bay Area organizations work tirelessly to protect and enhance the Bay's remaining wetlands.
The refuge was later renamed to Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in 1995 to honor Congressman Edwards' dedication to the refuge and its mission, which is to preserve and enhance wildlife habitat; protect migratory birds and threatened and endangered species; and provide opportunities for wildlife-oriented recreation and nature study for the surrounding communities.

Bay Area Bountiful: People & Wildlife
On this edition of Bay Area Bountiful, we explore how human development has impacted the wildlife of California. The Grizzly Bear was once a dominant species, but as people settled here in greater numbers, the population of the Grizzly declined. Discover how European colonization upset the balance between healthy salmon populations and Native fishing practices. See how bats are finding a safe home in the wineries of Northern California.
