Chapter 24: This Is What a Budget $300 Maasai Mara Safari Is Like (Maasai Mara, Kenya)
I was in East Africa and I was dying to go on a Safari. I almost died when I saw how much the tours cost. A fellow backpacker at my camp informed me of a 3D2N Maasai Mara Safari that cost US$300 that I jumped on immediately!
In the end, I was very pleased with the whole experience. My tour group and I were housed in a comfortable eco-camp about 10 minutes outside of the park for 2 nights with all the meals included. We also had 1 full day game drive along with 1 sunrise drive.
I saw so many animals from antelopes, zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions (so many lions..) to warthogs. I never saw the elusive rhino nor leopard to complete the Big Five but seeing 3 (lions, elephants, buffalo) out of the 5 was stellar!
Everyone is in the same park and will see the same animals so the more you pay, the more comfortable your accommodations and food are, but the animals will all be the same!
If you're interested in booking this safari, contact Celestine at Adventure Backpackers Tanzania. Their phone number in Nairobi, Kenya is +254 780 136 545 and there are departures almost everyday. Mention that Nico sent you and, who knows, she might give you a little bit of a discount!
Happy Safari!

Of course, there will be many game drives throughout the journey, but you’ll also take in the varied wildlife on a water safari, a guided walking safari and, if you wish, a bicycle safari. Now that’s something you won’t see anywhere else!
Your safari begins at Amboseli National Park. With its views of stunning Mt. Kilimanjaro, the park’s big game of lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo are all yours to explore. The multiple game drives here will bring you in the vicinity of impala, giraffe, wildebeest and possibly cheetah.
Moving on to the great Rift Valley, you’ll enter Lake Naivasha. Here you’ll take a water safari, sailing past hippos and enjoying views of the abundant birdlife populating this freshwater lake. Look out for the giraffe and zebra on the nearby shore.
Then, at nearby Crescent Island, you’ll be treated to a guided walking safari. Casually hike by impala, giraffe, zebra and other small game as they graze.
If you wish you may take an optional bicycle safari at Hell’s Gate National Park,. Have fun pedaling by the grazing gazelle, antelope and giraffe. This is definitely a story you can take back home!
Then we’re off to Lake Nakuru National Park where we’ll encounter black & white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffe, hippo, and look out for lions and leopards. This is a beautiful park adorned with swaths of acacia trees. There is plentiful birdlife here as well. And sightings of flamingos are not uncommon. So get your camera ready!
The big finale of your adventure tour is at the king of safari destinations – the Masai Mara. The world-famous Mara is rich with a vast display of wildlife. You’ll enjoy numerous game drives during your days here to view the Big Five as well as smaller game.
The Mara is a stunning eco-system with its vast savannah, accented with acacia trees. If you wish, as a special addition, you can arrange with your guide to visit a Masai village and meet the people still living their traditional lifestyle. What a fitting end to your 6 days of new adventures in East Africa.

Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of preserved savannah wilderness. It is home for such animals as lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, hippos, giraffes, antelopes, jackals, hyenas, impalas, different bird species and more. Wildebeest traverse its plains during their annual migration. Enjoy the landscape that has grassy plains and rolling hills. But the best known thing about Maasai Mara is the Great Migration. The Great Migration in Africa is a breathtaking nature phenomenon which takes place between April and October each year. More than two million wildebeest and zebras trek from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Massai Mara National reserve in Kenya.
Thousands of animals grazing the grass plains, a great number of wildebeest are trying to cross the Mara River braving and fighting the crocodiles. These animals migrate, meet their enemies and fight them bravely struggling for life and looking for greener pastures.
We invite you to enjoy gorgeous wildlife in Kenya, Africa. This video in premium 4K quality from and depicts diverse African wildlife in Maasai Mara National Reserve.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve (also known as Maasai Mara and by the locals as The Mara) is a large game reserve in Narok County, Kenya; contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Mara Region, Tanzania. It is named in honor of the Maasai people (the ancestral inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when looked at from afar: Mara, which is Maa (Maasai language) for spotted, an apt description for the circles of trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area.
It is globally famous for its exceptional population of Masai lions, African leopards and Tanzanian cheetahs, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest to and from the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the Great Migration.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is only a fraction of the Greater Mara Ecosystem, which includes the following Group Ranches: Koiyaki, Lemek, Ol Chorro Oirowua, Olkinyei, Siana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Ol Derkesi, Kerinkani, Oloirien, and Kimintet.
Wildlife
--------------
Wildebeest, topi, zebra, and Thomson's gazelle migrate into and occupy the Mara reserve, from the Serengeti plains to the south and Loita Plains in the pastoral ranches to the north-east, from July to October or later. Herds of all three species are also resident in the reserve.
All members of the Big Five (lion, leopard, African elephant, cape buffalo, and black rhinoceros) are found in the Maasai Mara. The population of black rhinos was fairly numerous until 1960, but it was severely depleted by poaching in the 1970s and early 1980s, dropping to a low of 15 individuals. Numbers have been slowly increasing, but the population was still only up to an estimated 23 in 1999.
Hippopotami and crocodiles are found in large groups in the Mara and Talek rivers. Leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, jackals, and bat-eared foxes can also be found in the reserve. The plains between the Mara River and the Esoit Siria Escarpment are probably the best area for game viewing, in particular regarding lion and cheetah.
As in the Serengeti, the wildebeest are the dominant inhabitants of the Maasai Mara, and their numbers are estimated in the millions. Around July of each year, these animals migrate north from the Serengeti plains in search of fresh pasture, and return to the south around October. The Great Migration is one of the most impressive natural events worldwide, involving some 1,300,000 wildebeest, 500,000 Thomson's gazelles, 97,000 Topi, 18,000 elands, and 200,000 zebras. These migrants are followed along their annual, circular route by predators, most notably lions and hyena.
Antelopes can be found, including Grant's gazelles, impalas, duikers and Coke's hartebeests. The plains are also home to the distinctive Masai giraffe. The large roan antelope and the nocturnal bat-eared fox, rarely present elsewhere in Kenya, can be seen within the reserve borders.
More than 470 species of birds have been identified in the park, many of which are migrants, with almost 60 species being raptors. Birds that call this area home for at least part of the year include: vultures, marabou storks, secretary birds, hornbills, crowned cranes, ostriches, long-crested eagles, African pygmy-falcons and the lilac-breasted roller, which is the national bird of Kenya.
Visiting
--------------
Game parks are a major source of hard currency for Kenya. Entry fees are currently US$80 for adult non-East African Residents and $30 for children. There are a number of lodges and tented camps for tourists inside the Reserve and the Conservation area borders. The tourists/visitors cater for their own expenses, unless previously arranged by their agencies.
Although one third of the whole Maasai Mara, The Mara Triangle has only one lodge within its boundaries (compared to the numerous camps and lodges on the Narok side) and has well maintained, all weather roads. The rangers patrol regularly which means that there is almost no poaching and therefore excellent game viewing. There is also strict control over vehicle numbers around animal sightings, allowing for a better experience when out on a game drive.
Lodges and camps are available inside the Reserve including Keekorok. Balloon safaris are also available. Early morning departures let visitors see the vast landscape, the rising sun, and the gatherings of animals.
Mara Serena Airport, Musiara Airport and Keekorok Airport are located in the Reserve area of the Maasai Mara. Mara Shikar Airport, Kichwa Tembo Airport and Ngerende Airport are located in the Conservation area of the Maasai Mara.
Our Kenyan Safari - Camping In The Masai Mara
Back in 2003 my wife and I went on safari to Kenya and spent 2 nights camping at Little Governors Camp. Ok we weren't exactly rouging it, but we only had canvas between us and wild animals such as lion, leopard, hippo, elephant and crocodile. Was also lucky enough to do a balloon flight over the Mara
